Seeking Advice on Feeding 11 Month Old

My son is close to 11 months and has been on a pretty disciplined eating schedule since he was about 5 months old. I feel lucky, and although I have progressed with the stages in feeding (Gerber stage 1, 2 then 3), I have not changed how often he eats. My mother watches him every once and awhile and, being "old school", is constantly telling me that I should feed him more "snacks", because he "seems" hungry all of the time (my kid would eat all day long if you let him!). I really want to instill great eating habits with my son and love the schedule he's on, but does anyone have any advice on this topic for a child this age? Should I be feedng him between meals and if so, what is a good snack (besides Cheerios - we've established that he loves those and would eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner if we let him). Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

Hi T.!
My son is also about to be 11 months. My how time flies! I work at a day care so I've had a bit of a routine to strive for since the begining. This is the schedule that we follow at work.

8:00 Breakfast
9:30/9:45ish mid-morning Snack
11:30 Lunch
2:30/3:00ish afternoon snack (with bottle until 1 year)

and we have dinner around 5:30/6:00
This works for us!

Most snacks at the day care include some sort of cracker (nila waffers, graham cracker, cheerios, goldfish, etc..) and a fruit (pineapple, pears, peaches, bananas, etc..)

My son isn't the biggest fan of all these, but it gives him the chance to try different things. I think that snacks are a great way to try new foods. There isn't the same kind of presure like some meal times are. If they aren't interested it's no big deal! Well I hope that this helps a little bit. Good luck with your soon to be 1 year old! And for the baby on the way! Congrats!

Okay if he is hungry feed him, if hes fine on what youre doing then okay. But if he does need a snack which most little kids do feed him good things. I have a 2yr old and a 9month old, I feed them veggies as a snack. They LOVE green beans and the cans of mixed veggies too. On the go snacks, cherrios, kix, and one of my kids favs the all natural white cheddar cheetos. They are much better for them than the regular. Well I hope that helps somewhat. But I would say give him healthy snacks whatever you give him.

You should get the book Feeding Your Baby, Practical Handbook by Sara Lewis. It is a great book to help feed your son. There's lots of recipes and food ideas. There are also reciepes for simple snacks.
If you don't want to do a book try giving him fruit and veggies between meals cut in small pieces. My kids always loved frozen peas. The Gerber Graduate puff snacks are a good option too. Sometimes I put bananas, orange juice and what ever frozen fruit I have in the blender for a smoothie. Try to avoid to much fruit though, or he'll end up just wanting the sweetness of it. Hope this helps some.

Your son is just the right age to start instilling good eating habits in him-good for you that you're doing this. At that age children should be eating approximately 5 times a day. Remeber a child's belly is only the size of his or her fist, and they burn through food quickly. They should be allowed to snack as long as they are given healthy choices. Things like Gerber snack crackers and cookies, fresh fruits and veggies-with or without dips-, and dry cereal are great options and allow for variety in the child's diet. Another great option is cheese cubes, frozen juices, or hommade smoothies or even yogurt. There are many options and as long as your son is happy keep up the great work.
