Seeking Advice for 3 Year Old's Hair Falling Out

Our kids all have very thick beautiful hair and today I was playing with my 3 year old son's hair and noticed these chunks of hair on his scalp were crusty and creamy at the same time. I went to pick some of it out and a huge clump just fell out. He didn't even notice it at all. I feel like if I kept messing with it, all of that hair in the area would come out too. What do I do? It's all over the top of his head in the front but no where else.

It could be a number of things. It could be ringworm of the scalp, eczema or a simple infection where his tiny little fingenails scratched his scalp and it became infected. My daughter had eczema in her scalp and this condition would cause the same symptoms and some of her hair fell out. Simple antibiotic will help. It is definitely a skin/scalp infection.

My FIRST guess would be ringworm, which is super contagious, causes hair to fall out in clumps, but is also super treatable.

But guesses aside, you should make an appt at your doc....because there are actually a whole lot of possible causes for this type of hair loss, ranging from allergies, to hormones, to infection (like the fungal infection ringworm), to poison.

You need to see the pediatrician asap or see a dermatologist asap. It could be a fungal infection, seb. dermatitis(like cradle cap) or even impetigo. I am a dermatology PA.........I am on maternity leave, but you could see someone in my office. See Dr. Craft, Kathy Nguyen PA or Dr. Blumenstrauch. Let them know you spoke with me R. Willis-Alessi.

I'm sorry that happened to your son. I think you should take him to the doctor to get him checked. Just to be on the safe side. I do want to share with you that Arbonne International has great safe, pure, beneficial products for babies and up. My children & I have used the products and it is all safe. It is made from natural ingredients from plants, fruits, vegetables, etc. I would love to send some samples for you & your son to try for 3-4 days. Send me an email if you are interested.

My husband's hair all fell out in patch when was around three years old. The doctors told him it was a blood deficiency. He lacked the B12 vitamin. This may not be the case with your child but let the doctor check your child out. We can all speculate but the doc will know.

Take him to the Doctor... and make sure it is not something that is contagious.

To me as well, ditto Riley. It sounds like Ringworm.
But check with a Doctor to make sure.
If ringworm, it can spread to other places.

Or maybe it is from something topical, like shampoos or something.

All the best,
Susan

It sounds similar to what my 4 year old son has/had. It was kind of whitish and scab-like on the top of his head. I did the same thing where I tried to pull it down the strand of hair with my fingernails to take it out and ended up with like 10 hairs together with the scab. It didn't seem to bother him but it was kind of gross. Kind of like cradle cap like someone else said. What we ended up doing was massaging a cream into his hair and leaving it on for a half a day or so (he loved the spikey look) and then washing and combing it out. This was a couple of months ago and I haven't seen it return. If it does, we're just planning on doing the same thing again.

Ours almost definitely was not ring worm (read about it after seeing the other posts). It was not contagious and there was no rash at all.

Good luck!

I would suggest contacting your Pediatrician. It could be nothing, but there could also be a vitamin deficiency, very simple to take care of. Besides that you mentioned clumps coming out which may leave little tears on the scalp, that could get infected.
Good Luck!

Oh my! My 3 year old son just developed the exact same thing! I am a little freaked out! He has long curly hair, and has never had skin porblems or anything before, so I am really wondering what this could be. After reading these comments, I will bring him to doctor tomorrow!
