Seaking Moms Who May Have Hip Pain Due to Child Birth

My son is now 4 months old and in the last month my hips have been just killing me. When I sit for a long period of time they get so stiff which makes getting up a little difficult. I have heard of womens hips hurting during pregnancy, but haven't heard of anything for after childbirth. Just wondering if anyone has gone through this as well.

What can I do next?

Mine did to. No one could ever give me a reason for it. It did go away. I am nearly 3 years post partum and the pain went away maybe 6 months ago. Drs. did Say that maybe it was the stress on them from being preggers. They all told me to take IB profen and ignore it basically! If you find out what is going on let me know please!!

Hi T.:

Just wanted to let you know that I've had three children, had hip problems each and every time afterwards. You know what I did, I went to a massage therapist that specializes in sports medicine and she worked on the sciatic nerve (that's where your pain is coming from). It was the best thing I ever did.
I got relief right away. It's money well spent!!!

Have you tried to go to the chiropractor? That will usually help with some of the pain... But you can also try something else. When I worked for a PT we would give all moms a rubber band exerciser to use. If you lay on your back and then put the rubber band around your knees...when you open and shut your legs that will strengthen your back and hip area. Also lay on your side and lift your leg up and down (with or without any weight) that will also help. Hope that this helps

I FEEL YOU! I had my son 10 months ago...and I've been to the chiropractor about 10-12 times since about June 2006. It's miserable...I feel good right after the cracking- but after about 3-4 weeks...the pain is back and I'm in tears getting up off the floor. I think in my case it could be due to my delivery- the Dr. had me pushing when I was having severe back labor due to my son being face up. OW! The chiro has cracked my pelvis back a few times-I'm not going to lie- I'm in tears when I leave...but with some TLC I'm usually back to good by morning. I've taken motrin and tylonol PM at night & used frozen veggies and heating pads when needed but other than that- I've more or less just dealt with it. If you find a miracle cure...please let me know! I hope it gets more tolerable & congratuations on your newborn!

I have had the same kind of pain in my hips. (I am a first time mom of a 5 month old daughter.) I had never heard any of my mommy friends talk about it, so I assumed that it was just me. My chiroprator helped, but the pain came right back. I really don't know what to do about since some days are worse than others. I basically just keep thinking that it is something that I will just have to get used to. So, no, you are not the only one - I really wish I had some more suggestions for you. Let me know if you find out anything more. Best Wishes!

Hi! I feel your pain...or I felt your pain! My daughter is almost a year and I had pain in my hips (one especially) for about the first 6-8 months afterwards. I know others have said this, but going to a chiropractor (sp?) helped some with me. The Chiro said I was way out of wack and recommends every new mom be adjusted at least once after childbirth. Just think, that precious little wee one of yours puchsed through whatever..bones, joints, etc to get out! Now they have to somehow find there way back!! Aslo, I noticed my hip started feeling better once I started doing some moderate exercise. It hurt a little more at first, but once I got stronger it really helped. Swimming is a great non-harsh way to get back in shape and get your joints and things strong and in place again. Ask your chiro/doc if there are any hip strengthening exercises you can do! Good luck!! Oh the pain we go through for our little dears!!

I am a occupational therapist and I experienced the same problem when I had my daughter. With my background I have a tendancy to say please don't go to the chiropractor. The pains you are feeling are likely do to loose ligaments in your hips and a chiropractor won't be able to strengthen them. Pelvic and hip strengthening exercises would be your best bet. Some physical therapy clinics have women's health programs designed for pregnany (before and after) as well as other women's issues. If you are breast feeding your child then your hormones are still different and your joints will remain a little looser. I would recommend talking with your doctor about some exercises or a possible PT referral. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Hi, I have never experienced this sort of thing. However I have had two c-sections, and that probley isnt your case. I do wonder however if its normal for it to start hurting after three months or more for your hips to start hurting. I would, if at all possible think about going to the doctor for some x-rays before doing anything that could put your body at harms way. you never know maybe you hurt it without realising it. well I hope you start feeling better, and good luck with your baby. I hope this helps...

I have a similar problem but it is only on the one hip. I still occasionally have pain and my child is now 8 years old! What helps me the most is doing pilates and an occasional massage. The problem so I have been told is a weak core (abdomen & back). This may have occured because of two back to back pregnancys. When I do pilates or other back/abdomen exercises on a regular basis I do not have pain at all. You might want to give this a try. If you haven't seen a doctor I would check in with one as well.
Hope this helps,
Tam

Actually, I've been thinking this was just something I was dealing with. My son is almost 4 years old. Most of the time I feel just fine, but every now and then my hips ache so much. It keeps me from falling to sleep and actually hurts to lay down. I don't have any answers for you, but at least we both know that we aren't alone.

Get to a chiropractor, especially one that speciallizes in pregnancy related problems.
I would also encourage you to take lots of calcium, but make sure that it is balanced with magnesium too (2:1).
Hope you start feeling better soon!

Hello T.,

I didn't have hip pain due to child birth, but I have been dealing with arthritis the last 5 years. I have pain in my knees and thumbs. The thing that has helped me is joining a tai chi/yoga class. It seems to help my joint pain, flexability and strengthens core muscles.

I hear you my kids are 5 and 8 and sometimes I feel like an old granny. I know when it's colder outside that makes it worse. I sleep with a pillow between my legs sometimes and use a heating pad. That helps some. Also yoga and exercise have done wonders. Just make sure you listen to your body and don't over do it. Doing simple streches can be a blessing. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask your dr. I didn't relize that this was such a big thing. But seems like a lot of moms go throught this. So maybe there is help for you.

Go see a Chiro. My sons are 5 and 4 and I finally went to the chiropractor this June I had the same problem. My hips would lock and my back killed me. It turned out that my tail bone was curled and my spine was twisted in three different places. I ended up getting stretches that I still have to do everyday but I incorporate into playing with the boys. and when you sit or stand keep your back straight and do not cross you legs when you are sitting it is really bad for women in the back. I hope that this helps you!!

Stay at home Mom of two wonderful and very active boys
