Excused or not, there are certain events in life that trump a day (or two) or public education. Yes, a child should be excused to go attend their grandmother's funeral.

Absolutely.

I have had students bring in copies of the "hand outs" from the funeral, but it is usually not an issue unless the child has attendance problems to begin with so they need to provide proof of reasoning for missing.

In our school - something like that is listed as an excused absence. It's in the handbook for the school district that the death of an immediate family member is considered an excused absence. In cases where the student must miss several days for travel or major testing periods then the school may require a copy of the Obituary or a signed document to allow for makeups but otherwise it is excused.

Yes they should. In my experience, they are.

If you are asking what your school's policy is, you should check the school or district's website.

If you are asking if your child should go, it depends on your child and his/her age, maturity level, and person wishes. Only you can really answer that.

at the school I work at, any funeral for immediate (grandparents, aunts, uncles....etc) family members is excused with a note and a copy of obituary and/or the "pamphlet" from the funeral home. We prefer it to name either the parent or child in one or the other, but either way a funeral is excused.

The answer should be in the school handbook or on the district website.

In our experience, yes they are excused.

We had an unfortunate funeral happen right at end of semester exams a few years ago and my daughter happened to have 1 exam left to take which was when we needed to be on a plane to the funeral. She was excused from school and per her grade which had always been an A, she was excused from the exam as well.

Sometimes they may look at a case by case basis... especially when children miss a lot of school due to funerals.

Yes, and I believe immediate family counts as an excused absence - at least in public school.

Do you have a school handbook? Is there a school website with policy?

At any rate, I think the funeral of a grandparent is a good reason to miss school--even if the note says your child was I'll.

Sorry for your loss.

Yes. Most schools even state something to that effect in the handbook. You should call the school in advance of the missed day(s), rather than waiting until after.

I truly would not care. If I wanted my child to attend a funeral I would keep them out and take them. I really prefer to not take kids to funerals though. I don't think they need to physical interaction in that setting. Seeing a dead body has nothing they need.

So if you want to take the kids to a funeral take them. The school only has so many days the kids have to be in school for them to pass. Even if they miss more than that it's up to the teacher and principle to say they can move up or retain them. Since it's just a few days I'd take them for sure.

In our school system it would be excused. The days may be limited but not sure. Actually, any family relative funeral would be an excused absence.
