Scarlet Fever?

I took my 13 month old daughter to Urgent Care just a little while ago. They told me that she has scarlet fever. They explained it in a sort, but I am still confused. They gave me antibiotics for her, but for some reason I don't think she has scarlet fever. The rash isn't there constantly. It appears more like a heat rash if she gets too hot. Is this normal?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Okay, turns out she didn't have scarlet fever. It was a really bad heat rash. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Definitely follow up with her Pedi. Scarlet fever can be pretty serious and other things are oftern misdiagnosed as scarlet fever by over anxious doctors. I would start the antibiotics and then call her DR. and tell them you need a second opinion and hopefully they will work you in quickly. Good luck and hope she feels better.

Heat rash normally occurs in the groin area, whereas scarlett fever begins on the neck and chest and then spreads over the body. Try this website and see if this helps http://www.healthline.com/adamcontent/scarlet-fever?utm_m.... Good Luck!

J.,

to be honest with you, i know nothing about scarlet fever. you could look up the symptoms on the internet. i have looked many things up medically, and it is usually pretty helpful.

i can say though, that my granddaughter breaks out horribly with heat rash. she gets it all over her. we just went to the zoo saturday, and she was covered! but a couple hours home, and in the cool air, it all disappeared.

seriously look up on here about the two. you can put in different symptoms, look up on different sites, and compare notes. good luck, and take care.

Hello J.. If you don't think it's Scarlet Fever, get another opinion from your child's pediatrician. My son had Scarlet Fever this past spring, it was terrible. Basically it's a really bad form of Strep Throat with a rash. In my son's case he was red and bumpy head to toe. He then was peeling for a few weeks. The fever is usually high for a lengthy amount of time. I was scared because it was 104.5-105. It took him a while to bounce back too and he is much older than your daughter. I would talk to your pediatrician to get the best feedback on your daughters health, every child is a little different when it comes to how they react to an illness. Good luck, I hope she is feeling better soon.

Have you checked back in with your primrary care doctor? You really should make a stop to let them know whats going on, what's changed and your concerns.

Heat rash does come and go. My daughter had scarlet fever. The doctor told me that she had strep throat and I did not get it taken care of quick enough and it went into scarlet fever. She was young when this happened. I felt like a horrible mother at the time, but she is a 17 year old typical teenager. I guess I worried for nothing. LOL I hope this may have helped answer you.

I don't know a whole lot about scarlet fever but it sounds like it could be Fifth's Disease. Is it a flat lacey like rash and did your child just get over a cold? I know with Fifth's the rash appears more if the child gets warm or like bath time. Look it up on the Children's Medical Center web site. If it is Fifth's it is not contagious when the rash appears but could last up to a couple weeks. Hope this helps.

I would take her to her doctor for a second opinion if you don't feel comfortable. I know my daughter had a viral rash that came and went as she got warmer. The bumps looked kinda like measles (they call the viral rash "baby measels"). So maybe that is what she has, just get a second opinion. It doesn't hurt

Hi J.! First off let me start by saying I am not a Doctor so this is only my personal advice. When my son was about 13 months he broke out in what I thought was heat also. But it seemed to get worse as the weeks went by. I was so worried that it was something serious and took him to the hospital. After being there for 16 hours and going through 12 doctors and 9 nurses they diagnosed scarlet fever. We did the antibiotics and the checkups but it still wasn't getting any better. I then took him to his pediatrician and they did the same route with antibiotics and so on. This went on for about 3 months. I just happened to be shopping where I think I must have gone for a reason. The lady behind me in the checkup line was a nurse for a pediatrician dermatologist and she said in my opinion it looks like he has eczema. So I made an appointment and the doctor wasn't even all the way through the door and knew what it was. After almost 4 months of torture for my son it was something simple that was treated with a cream. My advice would be to contact your pediatrician and see about getting the name of a pediatrician dermatologist. I hope my advice helps and good luck!

My husband had scarlet fever and his symptoms were a fever and flu like symptoms for two days and then a red bumpy rash all over his torso and face, hands and feet. It lasted about a week and then his hands and feet peeled. At first, they tested him for meningitis and we joked that he had Roseola (which my daughter had gotten a year prior). It took almost two weeks for us to confirm what he had.

My daughter at 10 months old had Roseola, which was several days of unexplained fever and then when the fever broke she developed a similar rash to what my husband got with it being all over her torso. It lasted about 2 days. When I took her to her pediatrician, at first they thought that she had a unrinary tract infections since the rash did not develop until after the fever broke.

The reason I mention both is that both infections are caused by the strep virus, which for did not show up in throat cultures. It appears that anyone can get strep in different parts of their body and develop these other diseases. We had had a nurse at a Quick Clinic tell us husband had strep and did not believe her because it was not causing him a sore throat. After some research, I found out that she was correct because there are several forms of strep and it comes out different symptomology.

Both of these diseases appeared to look like heat rash. Both were pretty much harmless because it was caught early and treated. I don't believe my daughter even had to have an antibiotic.

Here is what I would do. If your child did not have unexplained fever symptomology before or during the rash, I would go get a second opinion. In fact, I would make an appointment with my pediatrician anyway for him/her to follow-up on what Urgent Care prescribed my child. I definitely would ask my pediatrician about the fact that the rash somes and goes with baby being hot. I suspect he/she will either confirm your suspicion that it is only heat rash, or will tell you it is due to the scarlet fever being untreated and that the heat brings it out. I would not stop the antibiotics until you get definite answer from your pediatrician than what the Urgent Care gave you as you do not want things to get worse.

I hope this helps. Good luck!
