Has anyone ever tried an OTC scar medicine? My 6 year old daughter has a scar on her face, thanks to a toy and her sister. I have healed the cut as best as I can, but she now she is left with a scar. I know they make OTC medicine, but wanted to check to see if anyone has used these? Do they work? Which one do you like best? Thanks for your help!

I use vitamin E GELcaps. I buy the Walgreens brand and since they are gelcaps I simply squeeze out the actual liquid and apply it to the scar on a daily basis. You can also try Aloe Vera from the plant and place the slimy liquid on the scar. It works very well.

On my own scars, rather than a medication, I have used cocoa butter and vitamin E. While the cocoa butter certainly helped to soften the scar tissue, I found that the vitamin e was the most helpful in reducing the appearance of the scars. I used to buy the vitamin E capsules and just prick a small hole into it and apply it on a regular basis. You just need to be diligent in its application, and don't expect results overnight or even in a week! Keep it up and eventually you will see results. Given your daughter's age, it will probably be much faster than on my own tough, 36 year old weathered skin! :)

My daughter had 3 surgical procedures on her cheek to remove a nevus. We used Children's Mederma for awhile but my daughter didn't like the smell. Her plastic surgeon highly recommended that we just massage her cheek for about 5-10 mins a day with Aquaphor; the skin does not absorb this gel. He also highly recommended that we protect her scar with sunblock everyday. I have been doing this religiously for 6 years and her scar is barely visible...and her scar is due to surgery! I'm sure if you follow these same procedures, your daughter's scar will be non-existant in no time!!! Good luck!

If it is a raised scar the silicone patches can work wonders. I bought the CVS brand and cut them in half, more bang for your buck - depending on size of scar, plus they are reusable and will still stick through a shower. I use them everytime I have to have my cardiac device (pacemaker type device) replaced and they work every time. As far as getting rid of the 'skin scar or discoloration, light or dark' I think you're best bet is to massage the scar with Vitamin E oil or cocoa butter like the others suggested and make sure you use sun block constantly. I have used Mederma in the past, but not sure if the product did more of the work or the massaging of the scar actually did.

I have had people get good results with scars with Shaklee's C&E Repair cream. I have used it on my 2 yr old granddaughter. Because Shaklee is so meticulous about product quality, I don't have any concerns about using what I use on my face on her. I would be happy to furnish more information or send you some samples to try if you are interested.

At her age, you can use something besides the otc scar medicine. If she is fair, I would put sunscreen on her face every day. But to minimize the scar - go to the health food store and ask for a highly concentrated vitamin e topical. Use that in addition to pure cocoa butter - you can buy a stick of cocoa butter most stores. I had a bad burn on my hand and this worked wonders, I have to actually really look to see where the burn was.
Also, I've found using the cocoa butter at night instead of my usual night cream actually moisturizes my skin 100% better. And it's way cheaper.

My sister used Mederma on my niece's burn scar a couple of years after it happened. There has been quite an improvement after just a month or so. I know there is also another brand that works really well but cannot remember the name.

My dermatologist said that vaseline would work just as well as mederma. What actually helps a scar heal and disappear is massage. When you massage the mederma or vaseline onto the scar, spend extra time just rubbing the area. It helps the scar tissue to break down faster.

my 10 yr old had surgery on her chest to remove a cyst this summer and it left a half inch long line. She is bothered by it so I bought Mederma to use on it. After a few days she had to stop using it cause it felt like it was burning the area and there was a quarter sized circle of red where it was put on. Not sure if that was cause the wound was too fresh or what though.

Mederma works wonders, but please check to see if there are any restrictions present on the label. I do not know if you can use it on children.

Good luck.

MEDERMA.......This is the best non scaring OTC...... One of my co workers was eating pizza and had the hot cheese fall on her chin while wiping it off it took her skin off with it. She used Mederma and has no scare what so ever on her chin. It's costly but it works really really good. Well worth it.......... Good luck!

If you ask your Doctor he will probably tell you that those scar creams generally do not do what they claim. My son had chicken pox when he was about 1 1/2 years old and his first pox was on his face and left a scar. He is now 19 years old, although the scar has faded some it is still visible. We asked the Dr. about it all along and he kept saying it will slowly fade, those creams do not do what you think they will and it has faded quite a bit but you can still see it slightly.
The scar on his head from stitches when he was about 1 year old is still there but has slightly diminished. My option save your money and just put Vit C cream or Vit. E. cream on it.

I used Mederma for kids on my daughters scar. She had open heart surgery and as soon as we were able to put it on we did. Her scar is noticeable, but barely.
Good Luck

We tried Mederma for kids on my daughter's face. It has to be rubbed in 2-3 times a day for months. It was kind of a pain and I am not sure if it did anything that wouldn't have happened with time on its own anyway. But if she is really self-concious, it may be worth trying something.

When my daughter had surgery, the pediatric dermatologist at Children's Hospital recommended Mederma. You have to be meticulous about it. I would say it helped moderately, but as another poster mentioned, I think the massage is as important as the cream. It made the scar less raised, bumpy. You can get the kids version which changes color when you have rubbed it in enough. Visit http://www.mederma.com/ for a $2.00 coupon.

I used Mederma on a rather large dog bite scar on my daughter's face after talking to her doctor nad the pharmacists. My train of thought was I would try this to hopefully make some difference so that we can wait a while until we talk about plastic surgery- she was only 3 when it happened and the Dr. said that you have to wait at least a year for the wound to heal through all layers. Anyway, we used it very diligently, like the tube says, a couple of times a day for about 10 months. while I do notice the scar has much less color, it is still visible and the area that it's in is hard to massage, so it is still slightly raised. I do not know if the Mederma actually had much of an effect on it or if it was just time, but I did notice that after using the product for a few months, a small eczema like rash started, right around the wound- which was already 4 months old at that point. The Dr. could not determine whether the rash was from the product or something else, and it did eventually clear on it's own, so who knows. Just thought I would add my expereince and let you make up your mind- HTH!!

My little person had 2 facial surgeries and the plastic surgeon after the final reconstruction recommended MEDERMA. It is sold over the counter and a little expensive but the different between that scar and a scar on his foot that we left untreated are amazing. Hope it helps!

I tried one of the OTC brush-on formulas with a small scar that was actually more of a gouge - it didn't do anything. For discoloration, I think you would have better luck.
