I gave my 4 1/2 year old Hyland's night time cold & cough which isn't working, poor thing is still coughing 2 hours later and not sleeping well. I gave one teaspoon then an hour later another 1/2 teaspoon, still not effective. I've always used Boiron Chestal for her with success, but had these samples of Hylands on hand. Anyway, my question is, can I give her robitussin (I never have before) after using the Hylands? Hylands is all natural. I want to help her sleep better. Any one use robitussin? It's 1/2 a teaspoon for ages 2-6.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I don't want to give her the robitussin, I just feel so badly. I do also give her straight honey, actually buckwheat honey, which is best for coughs, but this is the most persistent cough yet, it's not helping either. I was reading about vicks on the feet, we only have baby vicks, but I did it anyway,lol...with more hylands. She's still coughing :(

My pedi told me not to use any cough med on kids under 6 as research had repeatedly shown it to be ineefective in that age category. Companies still sell it bc they are allowed to and parents still buy it regardless trying to do something to help.

For a natural solution, you can try a teaspoon of straight honey. If you do that, dont wash down with water. The honey soothes her throat and eases the coughing.

You can also try lemon and honey water

"All natural" doesn't mean it's safe, for one. Snake venom and poison ivy are all natural, but not necessarily good for you. I agree that pediatricians have stated that there's no research showing cough meds are helpful in young kids and can be harmful. At the least, a waste of money.

Check on the Vicks - I'm not sure it's safe and I'm not sure it works. May just be a folk tale. I think there are some hazards with it as well.

Elevate the head of the bed - not just a pillow, but stick a folded blanket under the head end of the mattress so your child sleeps on a slant. Get as much liquid into her to flush out the infection, and if the cough is croup-y or if she's coughing up mucus, have her checked.

Beyond this, you might want to strengthen her immune system so you don't have to deal with this in the future. There's a lot you can do with proven supplementation to make colds and flu a thing of the past.

Please read the labels. The meds you are describing are the same medicine.

Robotussin and most store brands are Guaifenesin. Which is an expectorant.

It breaks up the goo and makes it easier to cough up. The med is made to cause them to cough to get the goo up. IF you want to stop a cough you need to give a cough suppressant.

Robotussin, Tussin, store brand name....all over the counter meds are almost all the same drug.

Here is a link to the information about it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guaifenesin

I suggest you read the labels to make sure then call a pharmacist. Walgreens is open 24 hours, there may be others too. A pharmacist can tell you if you are overdosing your child and they need to go to the ER.

Overdosing meds is the reason all the meds for children under the age of 6 were taken off the market. Children were dying. Check out the stories on the CNN website about over the counter meds killing children.

The doc can write a prescription for an actual cough suppressant that will be effective. Even the ones that do not contain Guaifenesin still do not have enough meds in them to do the job. There is very little scientific proof that any of the over the counter stuff actually works to stop coughing.

Tesslon Pearls work but are expensive. They relax the throat to where the cough can't happen. There are some meds that are narcotic in nature that will also numb the throat muscles and stop a cough. But be sure to give her something the next day to keep it loose so she can get the goo up and out. She will get better sooner if the goo is gone.

Coughs, can also be caused by post-nasal drip.
And it gets worse at night because when a person is lying down, then the post-nasal dripping mucus, drips down into the throat, and pools or accumulates in the throat, hence causing coughing. Because it triggers the gag reflex.

Make sure, you know where her "cough" is originating from.
Either the chest or the throat.

My pediatrician recommended Delsym Childrens cough syrup for my 4 year old son last month. He had a constant cough that wasn't going away using all the 'natural' methods so I gave him this and it went away immediately I couldn't believe it! I will always have this in my medicine cabinet now. Good luck.
