My 11 month old started having a fever randomly last night of 101. I gave him some medicine and laid him down for the night. Woke up this morning and got him up still a fever of 101. That was about 2 hrs ago and no change has happened. He barely ate last night or this morning. Ive been giving him liquids but besides the fever, loss of appiette, and irriatblity there isnt any other symptoms to narrow it down some more. Any advice on what it could be or what i should do? also, his doctor or nurses will not call me. Its pretty ridicoulous.

What can I do next?

teething can do that. I think a fever over 102 is considered something to cause concern and call the doctor (My doctor told me that). My 18 month old ran a few fevers with teething and also had one after getting vaccinated.

Are they closed on the weekends? Perhaps after this, you should find a practice that has doctors on weekend call.

Keep pushing the fluids - several ounces every 15 minutes. If he can't eat much, you need Pedialyte because it has potassium and electrolytes.

Keep the fever from spiking up by giving Tylenol and Advil. Call the pharmacist to ask for dosage and tell him or her how much your 11 month old weighs. Ask for how often you can give them - usually, they will let you switch back and forth between the two.

Most likely this is a virus. By not allowing the fever to spike up, but still having one, the fever fights the virus but doesn't hurt the brain. By continuing to hydrate often, and keeping a close eye on his eyes and skin tone (if you push on the skin, it should bounce back if he's not dehyrated) and checking his diapers to make sure he's urinating, you can help ride this out to see if he gets better.

If it appears to hurt for him to turn his neck, that could be meningitis and you need to get him to the hospital. Is there a hospital in your area with a peds attending? Find that out by calling now so that you are prepared. Have a bag packed "just in case".

You have a big weekend ahead of you, watching this child closely to make sure things don't "turn". There's meningitis to watch for, pneumonia, strep, etc. If you get scared, take him in. If he seems to be getting better, get him to the doctor's office on Monday morning.

Good luck, Mom!

I assume the 101 temp is the temperature that is either added a degree or subtracted a degree depending on how you took it. I would not worry about a temperature that low and doubt the doctor would tell you much or be too worried either. Get fluids down him, keep an eye on the temp that it doesn't go up and other than that it could be a virus or anything. If it keeps on then you could take him in to see if ears, throat, etc. are okay but kids get so many things that come from virus or other and just come and go. Don't worry and push the fluids often.

There's a virus going around. The symptoms sound similar to the ones our LO has, including the 101 fever. Diarrhea is likely to start next. Doc told me it was a virus and it needs to run its course. We're at nearly a week of it and DH and I have it too. Keep him hydrated, swap back and forth with INFANTS Advil and Tylenol, hold him when he's fussy, and try to get him to nap as much as possible. He needs rest to feel better too. FYI ... Now we have a rash on the tummy, too, and I'm pretty sure it's related. Best wishes.

I'm sorry your little one is sick! It could be any number of viruses. He's young, so there are plenty of things to catch. I don't consider 101 to be a high fever. I would only give motrin at night so he can sleep.

Does he cry more at night and/or when you lay him down? Does he tug at his ear? If so, maybe ear infection.

Since he doesn't seem to want to eat, maybe a viral sore throat. If so, you just have to wait that out. 11 month olds VERY rarely get Strep Throat, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Does he have a rash on his hands, feet, mouth or diaper area? If so, maybe coxsackie virus (common in summer months). There are no meds for this, just wait it out.

Does he have any white spots on his tongue or lips? If so, maybe thrush. This would need treated with meds.

Hope he feels better soon!

Teething or ear infections would be my first guess.
Monitor symptoms and keep him comfortable.

I wouldn't even treat a low grade fever unless he seems really uncomfortable. Let the fever do it's job. Keep him comfortable and hydrated.

when my kids get strep throat they only run fever and their bellies hurt.. but like others said maybe teething or sinus infection..

i ran 102 temp one time from a sunburn.. its your bodies way of fighting off something... i would be paranoid and take him to the E.R.

They must have an answering service, with an actual person available. Or a clinic they work with on the weekends that works with his/her patients. I have never heard of a pediatrician that someone is not always available.

I would check into this on Monday, if you do not receive a call this weekend.

Follow Dawn;s advice, it is exactly what I would do. Take a deep breath, I hated when our daughter was ill, I just wanted her to be better. But fevers mean her body is doing what it is supposed to be doing, continue to just hold her and try giving liquids.

Dont worry about food right now as long as he is getting plenty of fluids, my pediatrician wont see them for a fever unless it has been three days. at which point it either goes away or it is clear what the problem is. My son likes fruit smoothies when he is sick, froz pedialyte pops, and watermelon. Hope he is better soon!

my grandson was sick last week for about 5 days with these exact symptoms. My daughter gave him tylenol and motrin, and took him to the doctor on the 3rd day. The dr said it was a virus and let it run it's course. 2 more days, and then he was fine.

Many things are hard to detect. Ear infection could be brewing. Strept throat sometimes has no symptoms. You could always go to a walk in clinic if doesn't improve by tomorrow. Like the other Mama's said keep baby hydrated. You can give motrin and tylenol at opposite times to keep fever down. For example: Motrin, then 3 hours later tylenol, then three hours later motrin, etc.... That way motrin is 6 hours apart. Tylenol (I believe should be at least 4)

Well, my first thought is teeth! My twins always would come down with the random fevers. They never really chewed on anything or suggested it was anything in their mouth. My dr checked them out and many times it was always about their little tooth buds achey which lots a babies get random fevers from it and become fussy and also won't eat. Take a peak in his mouth and maybe there is one or two breaking through!!!!

Maybe a sore throat too. Although my friends kids just got over a 'fever' virus. They were fine after a few days. I personally do not treat a fever unless it's night time and they are having trouble sleeping. The fever raises the body temp to a level that is inhospitable for bacteria/viruses to live in & helPs them get better faster. Unless it goes over about 103, I don't treat. Then I usually only give one half dose of Tylenol, one time & then watch it & keep track. You are doing an injustice by giving so many meds. A fever is a good thing.
