Rash - Lake Arrowhead,CA

My daughter is 2 months and about a month ago she started to get what looked like baby acne. However it started to go onto her chest and behind her ears and on the back of her neck. The doc said it may be a food allergy ( i BF exclusively) and to modify my diet. I have done so but still the rash gets worse. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I know it is hard to say anything without seeing it but I am stumped. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

I would agree with some of these postings that it might be eczema. I just ignored it on my youngest daughter for about six months and then we treated it as ringworm for a month before we got a second opinion. It didn’t seem to bother her, but it looked like little patches of tiny red bumps. Once her ‘rash’ was diagnosed as eczema, we’ve been using Renew lotion on her skin twice a day and it has cleared up.

Sounds like what my son had, which turned out to be eczema. I would rule out that before changing your diet. My doctor suggested hydrocortisone, but it has a lot of nasty chemicals, so we only used it a few times (enough to get rid of it the first time). After that, we changed laundry detergent (I was using an all natural detergent, but I think it had something in there his skin didn't like, now use All Free and Clear), bathed my son less (maybe every 3 nights, it isn't like they get that dirty at 2 months, and we still wiped him down every night), changed his bath soap to an all natural one
(Nature's Baby Organics worked for us), and lotioned him up at night (again, go natural, you don't want the chems, we use Burt's Bees) whenever he was dry and had the eczema bumps. This fixed it for us, he did have a few "outbreaks" but we just used more lotion, sometimes hydrocortisone, and were really careful with baths. My son pretty much stopped having problems at a year old, but I know a lot of kids don't. I think we finally found a good balance to keep it under control. For us, it took maybe 3 or 4 days to get rid of it once we got rid of whatever it was that bothered his skin, but notice a slight change by the second day, so if you get rid of one thing at a time, you should notice pretty quickly that her skin is changing. Also, my son had problems where your daughter does, but also on his shoulders, upper arms, and back, mostly where his clothes rubbed a lot. You might want to try a looser or softer shirt, or no shirt/upper body cover, that might help too.

I would try cutting out wheat in your diet. My son had skin issues, and when he was about 6 months old, I found out I was wheat/gluten intolerant. I stopped eating wheat, and my swelling/joint pain went away, stomach issues vanished and I lost about 20 pounds in a few months. Since I was still BF, his skin cleared up as well. We decided not to give him any wheat products until he was older and when he turned two, we started to slowly introduce wheat into his diet. We hoped that since his dad was not wheat intolerant, that he would be okay... but, he started breaking out with a pimply rash that spread across his stomach, right thigh. We cut out the wheat and it cleared up. The unfortunate thing is, 1 in 7 people are wheat or gluten intolerant or allergic and do not realize this. Hope this helps you!

It would surprise you how many people are allergic to Dreft. I can only use Ivory Snow on my kids as Dreft does a number on them. Can I suggest you try changing laundry detergents?

You can try a soapless body wash called Aquafor (spelling) and follow up with Aveeno lotion. It may be a reaction beyond food. It could be heat rash if your home is too warm as well. Try the body wash then take it from their. Our son gets the same things, but a night time routine of Aquafor and night time Aveeno gives us a sleep filled night and a smooth baby. Although my son is 21 months we have been using the body wash since he was 4 months old.

My sin went through the same thing. The rash was all over his body.
I went to my pediatrician and she suggested that it maybe dry skin.
Feel your baby to see if the bumps are rough. I stopped using
all his skin care products ( i was using aveeno). I changed eveeything
to Cetaphil gentle skim cleanser for the body and for the head i use
aquaphor gentle wash & shampoo. I use Cetaphil daily advance
ultra hydrating lotion. I also use the Johnsons baby oil gel
aloe vera and vitamin E ( its the green cap and it says its
hypoallergenic) for the head and one a little bit on top of the whole body.
He also had bad cradle cap so i would wash with the aquaphor and a wash clothe and rub his scalp gently then use the Johnsons baby oil gel
and massage it on his scalp. I would use the cetaphil lotion and massage a dabb of johnsons baby oil gel all over the body even the face. There was a noticible difference of the skin and the rash went away in about 4-5 days
it seems like a lot to do but it really is not. I got the products at target.
I hope it helps you can try it i dont think it would hurt .

My daughter used to get hives after I nursed her. I did the same thing, took out dairy, etc. but they would still come and go. Her regular doc just said, it's hives and kids get them sometime. It drove me nuts! Eventually, after she was about 1 1/2 y.o. and it took on a different form of bumps around her mouth, I took her to the allergist my neighbor & friend had gone to. Turns out she was allergic to wheat, soy, egg whites, peanuts and shellfish. She's grown out of the wheat & egg whites allergy thank goodness! It's definitely worth a visit to an allergist. Good luck!

Hey B.,
It could just be prickly heat rash. My daughter used to get it on the sides of her face. The doc recomended that I use a medicated lotion on it and it went right away. She has sensitive skin to this day, as some just do. Good luck,
V.

Could be dry skin? I know my youngest had baby acne for ages until I realized his skin was just dry...I think it was the time of year. I started putting lotion on and it went away!

Time to return to pediatrician and ask about eczema- and not uncommon condition in infants. Also, it's possible that the allergy is from laundry detergent, your perfume or any lotion or skincare products YOU use. Look at the position you (or someone else) holds her in, and whether her affected areas are being cradles or touched. Assume if it looks itchy, it IS, and don't let her suffer. If it is eczema, there are many natural and medical therapies.

Someone has listed the most common food allergies so make sure that you start with dairy, soy, casein and eggs first as they are most common with eczema.

For her skin, we used Sensaria Natural Bodycare for my daughter's severe eczema. The Citrus Cleaner has been a God-send for so many to replace the laundry detergent. There are four scents for the Body Wash which replaces all soaps and can be used as a bubble bath and shampoo for the little ones (no more irritations!). There are several options for moisturizing the skin and the Hand and Body Lotion will probably be perfect, otherwise the Nourishing Moisturizer. There are no petroleums or mineral oils in the products which are harmful as well as doing nothing for moisturizing.

It might be eczema. My daughter had it and we switched all of our cleaning/laundry and all of our personal care products to non-toxic ones. She hasn't had a breakout in over a year.
