Question for Moms of Boys

As you all know, I'm currently potty training my oldest (which is going very well thanks to a trip out of town suprisingly enough). Now my youngest is starting to show interest in using the potty. Here's my problem: Nathan's a big guy, mainly in the upper body, so when he sits down "it" doesn't fit in the protective cup. I was wondering if anyone else has experience this problem and how you've overcome it. Thanks for any advice!!!

What can I do next?

Hi A.,
It sounds like it's time to learn to sink the cheerios. Throw 2 or 3 cheerios in the toilet and teach him how to aim "Mr. Winkee" at them to make them sink. It is a fun way to teach them to winkle in the toilet and to aim inside the bowl.
Have fun most of all and yes it may be a few messes as he learns to aim but overall I have found this very effective in teaching not only my son but most of my nephews how to sink the cheerios.

hi A.,
i just finished potty training my 2 1/2 year old and we had the same problem with the 'protective cup'. i just took it off and showed him that he has to 'point it down'. so everytime that he sits down (he just learned how to stand and pee) he'll look at me and say 'point down'. i only had to show him the first couple of times and then he started doing it himself. another thing that i did was facing him backwards, putting his knees on the toilet seat and letting him stretch across bowl so that he didn't have to aim... it just automatically pointed towards the bowl.
i hope that helps...

I never used a potty training seat. When i saw my boys dancing like they need to go then i go and put them on the big potty and sit there with them until they go. Then I have one that is 5 yrs old and my youngest watched him standing up and just caught on with that.

A.,

As soon as your boy has enough awareness to know whether poop or potty is going to come out, you can teach him to go potty standing up. You may need to buy a step stool so he is tall enough. My boy was almost 2 1/2 when we moved to this phase and he loved how much faster the whole toileting experience went. The cheerios are a great idea. My son prefered to pretend there were sharks, eels and an octopus in the toilet water and he liked to eliminate on them. Whatever works, right?

Best of luck,
S.

When we first potty trained our son he was not yet big enough to try to stand and also did not stay in the protective sheild, so for a while to avoid buying yet another potty thing we put a little toilet paper between him and the potty to keep it going in the right direction.

start showing him how to pee standing up. my boy had the same problem and it hurt especially if he was erect (which little boys often are when the have to potty)and the soft guards just made a mess. for sitting, take away the guard and have him use two fingers to push it down aiming at the water in the toilet. (they'll go through phases of prefering to sit then prefering to stand. don't worry about it. good luck

Both of my boys (now 12 and 6) learned how to potty standing up. It was like a game for them to make "bubbles" in the toilet (when the pee hit the water). They stood on a kiddie stool and aimed into the water. It was fun for them and got them excited about using the potty. I had a harder time training my daughter than the two boys b/c she couldn't see her "bubbles".

A.- We had the same type problem with my oldest who is now 4. I gave up the potty seat and started using a potty seat that fit over the big potty. It is like a soft seat that sits on and can be removed from the adult toilet. My son really started doing well once we started using that. We also bought a portable one that folds into a smaller unit to take with us to public restrooms. We found ours at Target, Toys R Us carries them too! Good Luck!!
