Hi!
I just found out I'm pregnant! I caught it very early...they estimate I'm about 3.5 - 4 weeks. My progesterone levels are low and I have to take a progesterone suppository. Anyone experience this? Could I possibly be close to miscarrying? Anyone have this and continue on with a healthy pregnancy/baby? This will be my 3rd...never had this complication with my other 2.
Thanks!

What can I do next?

I had the exact same problem and it was with my third as well with my first two not having this complication at all. They gave me the progesterone and it brought my levels up and all was fine. I got off them at about 14 weeks or so when my placenta took over. He is now almost 15 months old and very healthy. Miscarrying is a possibility but don't think like that, think possitive :)

I had low progesterone for the entire pregnancy with my youngest. My doctor recommended shots because mine was so low. My dear husband had the honor of giving them to me twice a week for 9 months. Most doctors don't continue to check on progesterone after the first trimester because it is thought that the placenta takes over at that time. I am proud to say I have a very wonderful 2 year old. I had a very special OB that continued to check my levels for the entire pregnancy. His office was several hours away and he monitored it over the phone while I used a local OB for all the rest of my care. I know that doctor saved my daughter's life.

yes, i had this problem with my first child. I was FREAKED out by it, esp because my doctor said "It could be an early sign that you will miscarry..." UGH. but i took the suppositories until week 12 or so when they told me to stop, and never had any problems. She is now 6 years old and wonderful :) I know it's almost impossible not to worry-- i panicked that every twinge was the start of a miscarriage, but after a few weeks, i felt a little better and you will too. Hang in there!

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I have 3 little ones and my hands are very full--full of good things.
Low progesterone early in pregnancy means 1 of 2 things and at this point it's impossible to know which is causing the levels to be so low. First, if your body doesn't produce adequate progesterone early in pregnancy, it can mean that you have a hormone imbalance (possible causes= PCOS, insulin resistance, obesity, or even perimenopause). Second, sometimes low progesterone can indicate that there is a problem with embryo (baby) itself not being healthy. Sometimes when an egg is preparing to be released through ovulation, it can be exposed to abnormal hormone levels that can affect it's development. In these cases, miscarriage is likely because the pregnancy itself is not healthy.
As I mentioned before, it's impossible to know why the progesterone is low at this point. Please, use the suppositories as directed and try to relax. Many pregnancies diagnosed with low progesterone progress to healthy, beautiful babies. Best wishes to you and yours! Nurse Midwife Mom

My cousin and I both had the same problem. We found out our progesterone was low because we both miscarried the first time we were pregnant. We both took progesterone for the 2nd pregnancy. I took it for 12 weeks and my 9 year old is doing great. My cousin has 3 kids so it worked for her too. Definitely take the progesterone. It will help you.

Good luck!

I had infertility issues due to low hormone levels. I got pregnant with trips via IVF and used progesterone cream to make sure my levels stayed high enough. I only used them for about 8 or 9 weeks. My kids are now 12. You do need high enough levels to maintain the pregnancy. I think i started using it around 3 weeks. The only problem I had with the cream is the doc though it may have contributed to a vaginal infection but cleared up with meds right away.

Hi Mindy,
Yes, I experienced this with my current pregnancy. I had 2 previous miscarriages. The doctor realized I did not have a problem getting pregnant but thought I was miscarrying due to my progesterone being low. (But I don't necassarily think that you're close to miscarrying.) So when I found out I was pregnant this time, he immediately tested my progesterone and said my level was low. I was put on progesterone suppositories through 13 weeks, I believe. After week 13, I think he told me that the placenta will produce the progesterone I need.
My pregnancy has continued on to be a healthy one. I'm currently 33 weeks. This is also my third, and I never had any complications with the others either. I hope this helps. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

I had this issue with my pregnancy and went full term with a beautiful active baby boy. They are giving you the progesterone to keep you from miscarrying. :)

Yes, me too! Only w/ my 2nd.
My precious boy (1yo) is sleeping in my lap right now.
I had a miscarriage prior to his conception.
My levels went up and I went off the suppositories around week 12.
Try not to worry! Lots of women have this problem and have healthy pregnancies!

Congrats!!!

I had the same problem with my 3rd. I had to have progesterone shots every day for 10 weeks. After 10 weeks of injections, I was told to skip a day & then went back to have my blood checked to see if I was making progesterone on my own. I was and that was the end of the shots. My son was born on time completely healthy & is now a 6ft tall, 18yr old first year college student.
