Okay i have a question for those of you who might have had my problem. I am pregnant with my second child and i was wondering if any of you had migranes with any of your pregnancies and if so what did you do to help them. Also i have been having a few bad bad dreams and wanted to know what i can do to stop having them. I am only three months pregnant and can not sleep. When i do sleep i have these dreams that sometimes feel so real. Is there anyone out there that had either of those problems? I have a one year old and it is sometimes hard to take care of her when i had only two hours of sleep at night. I do manage to take a nap sometimes when she does but one hour in the after is not much either. I thought once i got over the first trimester it would go away. Should i talk to my doc? Thanks to everyone before they even answer.

What can I do next?

Can't help you with the dream thing but I suffer from migranes and had them with both of my pregnancies. My doc told me to take 2 tylenol and drink a mountain dew, cup of coffee or anything else that has a lot of caffiene. It is like taking a couple of excedrin which you can not take while being pregnant. This helped me sometimes. Hope it helps you!

Hi T.,

My sister-in-law is pregnant with her third child and is having severe migrains. She called her midwife who said this happens to some women when their pregnant. She prescribed tylenol with kodein which she said helps.

Hormones and diet can cause it, but what always relieves my mirganes is going to my chiroprator. Works everytime. Dreams are usually very vivid when your are pregnant, I have had my worst nightmares while I was pregnant. Read or watch something that is funny or like read a book about pregnancy or breastfeeding etc. Also try lavender in a cool mist vaporizer make sure it is real essential oil! Not from Bath and Body.
Take Care

While migraines are common during pregnancy, there are a lot of other issues now that begin with headaches during pregnancy (few of them harmful to the babe- though).

Are your eyes bothering you as well? If so, you might want to consider an eye exam to rule out hormonal changes to your eyes such as papilladema.

If it's not caused by visual issues, you can always have your blood pressure checked by your doctor to make certain it's not the cause of your headaches.

With my second child I had horrible headaches, and it turned out I had developed papilladema. By the time they caught it, I had other health issues. So, if the headaches continue, get them checked out.

As for the vivid dreams--- that's very common... VERY common. lol. The OB might offer you something to help you sleep, but with another small child in the house you might want to avoid that.

Good luck.

This is my first pregnancy - I am currently 4 1/2 months along. I found that my bad dreams and heavy dreaming in general ended around 16 weeks. I also wasn't getting a whole lot of good sleep which didn't help my 3 1/2 year old very much either. (We adopted our little guy at 3 days old.)

I probably wouldn't call the doctor until after you're into your second trimester. But, if you need peace of mind and are really struggling - what can it hurt?

Hang in there!

I had bad migraines with both of my pregnancies. The took me to the point where I couldn't see. They put me on Vistarel, but just remember, it will make you sleepy. And yes talk to your doc, that's always the best thing to do.

T.,
Late in my pregnancy I had a few occurences that would result in a migrane. The vision in my right eye would look as if I were partially looking through rippling water and when that subsided...BOOM...a migrane. The only thing that helped me get rid of them was to be out of bright light. The migranes always subsided within a couple of hours if not sooner. I had the same thing happen a couple times after my daughter was born, but none since then.
If you have tried this or other things with no relief, I would suggest talking to your OB.

Good luck!

Sorry to hear about the migraines. I suffered from them for years so I know how bad that can be. Mine seemed to be more sinus related and taking pseudophedrine helped. Also, is your neck or back sore? A chiroprator might be able to help if that is the cause of the migraines. I too have vivid dreams. It is common during pregnancy. I dreamed the other night that I was being suffocated. I woke up and found it very hard to breathe. Nothing you can do about it that I know of.

Hi T.,
The vivid dreams are normal - I had them and, upon reading, found that it wasn't uncommon. The miagraines...well, I've had them, but never had a problem during pregnancy with them. Hopefully it's just part of that first trimester misery as your body works to get use to pregnancy and all those fun hormones. What helps me is a warm heating pad wrapped around the back of my neck and head and a holding a cold pack on top. Sounds screwy, but it was recommended by a headache clinic and it works pretty well.

Hi,
I would definately talk to your doctor about this. I also had baaaaad headaches with my second pregnancy. Tylenol is the safest thing to take - but that doesn't help much when you feel like you want to take a baseball bat to your head. I also found that if I wasn't drinking a TUN of water, the headaches would come back. Try drinking a gallon of water and as much Tylenol as they recommend.

I also had the very vivid scary dreams! They will go away. Hang in there! -S.

I had sleeping problems in the beginning of my pregnancy. This is my second child and she's due in december. I talked to my doctor and there are some over the counter sleeping aids that you can take. Talk to him or her to see what they think about it. I read up on them to see if there would be any side effects on these over the counter sleeping aids and they are completely safe for mother and child. I only took them as needed, and it helped. By the second trimester I got a lot of my energy back and was able to sleep better at night without any help and I feel great. Hopefully the same will be for you.

Hello I feel for you very much. I have had three pregnancy's and have had migraines since elementary school so I know exactaly what you are going through. talk to yuor doc. there is a migraine medicine you can take while pregnant that won't harm the baby I took it every time it really works if you ahve any questions on what it is called let me know I will find my empty bottle and give you the name. It really worked for me. I also had those same dreams. I never did figure out ho wto get those to go away. Sorry there. If you can try just going to bed a little earlier at night and they may help you woth the sleep issue. I know how tought that is also. When I was pregnant with my second I had a a one year old. I didn't sleep well at night either and then had to take care of my other one all day. Just continue to take naps when ever possible. I hope things get better for you. I apersonally just got use to it all because all three of mine were the same thing no sleep and migraines. I will be praying for you that things will get better for you. Keep in touch.

Pregnancy is a time for crazy dreams but my midwife suggested that I take chelated calcium--calcium with magnesium and zinc with a small glass of milk before bed and it really helped me sleep more peacefully and prevented leg cramps.
Good luck with the migraines--but extra sleep should help with them.

Headaches are common in pregnancy because of the expansion of blood volume dilating the arteries in the brain. Causes can include stress, tension, low blood sugar, constipation, dehydration, inadequate protein intake, or dietary insufficiency of other minerals, particularly calcium and iron. Sometimes making sure you have adequate rest, fluids, and food will help. Ensuring at least 80 grams of protein per day is helpful. Eat 20-30 grams at each meal and fill in the breaks with snacks of at least 10 grams. Eat in the middle of the night if you wake up, or as soon as you wake up (maybe before getting out of bed). Avoid caffeine. Take a Calcium-Magnesium supplement (600-800 mg Calcium to 300-400 mg magnesium). Relax with a cup of tea- Red raspberry leaf, nettle, alfalfa, and dandelion are good choices. Kelp can also be taken as a supplement (up to two "00" size capsules four times daily). Good luck!

Hi~
I have a little boy that is now going on 14 months, but when I was pregnant with him I had horrible migraines. I would lose my periferal vision for a little while and then the headache would kick in horribly! My Dr. said it was because of my hormones changing. I got them clear into the middle of my second trimester and then they stopped. I haven't had one since! I just took Tylenol (which really doesn't do much) and my Dr. offered me something stronger, but I get sick when I take pain meds. So I just toughed it out. As far as the bad dreams go, I had bad dreams everynight of my husband leaving me. It was literally everynight! My friend had the same thing too. Those also went away, but I remember waking up crying and waking him up to talk to him about it. Hope I helped a little. Take care!

Hi T., Congratulations first of all. I had headaches when I was pregnant and my doctor told me to see a chiropractor (I think because I had been going to one before) or to go and get a pregnancy massage to releave stress (that might help with the dreams too), But I would say definatly talk to your doctor and see what they say about the situation.

I did suffer both pproblems while pregnante with my first child. I found that once the Doctors perscribed me meds for the migraines that the dreams went away. Definetly talk to your doctors. In my case the headaches were only during my second trimester and then dulled down to just a normal pain.
