I'm 9 weeks and can't stop spitting or vomitting. I can't swallow my saliva it feels as if it's 1000 degrees( sorry if I just grossed out the entire mamasource community) and the heartburn is unbearable. I tried chew gum (sugarlesss pepperment or spearment) neither works seems to make it worse. Not eating too much or too late does not matter. I know I should be a pro at this by now but as we all know (those with more than one child) each pregancy is different this is the worse/wonderful experience. LOL Please suggestion!!!!!
P.S.
I think it's a GIRL!

What can I do next?

Congrats on the pregnancy.. Remember we have been there done that, you can't really gross us out. That being said, My OBGYN gave me a safe list of what I could use while being pregnant. Not to make you feel worse I didn't stop vomiting until I was 26 weeks with my first. I never laid down - if I did it made it 1000x's worse. I lived on zantec & malox. I called it my maylox shake. I could tolerate the orange cream the best. Good luck & take care.

Congrats L.!

I couldn't do mint products for any of my pregnancies so far (on #3 now). I used bubble gum toothpaste and chewed watermelon gum (Extra). I also liked sucking on hard candies - whatever flavor sounds enticing to you (if at all!). Preggo Pops are worth trying, at least once.

I hope you are feeling better soon!

Warmly,
B.

Hi L.,

RUN, don't walk to your nearest vitamin store and get some Papaya Extract tablets. I had TERRIBLE heartburn with my daughter. Seriously.... even a peanut butter sandwich gave me heartburn. I was downing 9-10 Tums per day! EEK! That's WAY too much. My OBGYN wanted to put me on actual perscription medication.... but I really really didn't want to do that. I only take prescriptions when absolutely necessary and I was concerned about the affects on baby. Even though she said it would be fine.... it's still something not natural I would be taking.

So, I found papaya extract tablets. They worked BEAUTIFULLY!!! They taste sweet, so really not horrendous to eat. You eat them like a tums. BUT there are no worries about taking too many because they are all natural. The only issue you may have to deal with if you end up taking alot is loose stool. Which, quite honestly, I welcomed because I had constipation issues during pregnancy. So, it helped balance things out. I know... TMI.

But Papaya really does work.

As far as the nausea, try something tomato based. My aunt had terrible nausea with her son and she found tomato worked. I tried it and it worked for me. I found anything tomato based.... pasta with tomato sauce, stewed tomatoes, tomato soup....whatever. Also, I found that my nausea seemed to be kept more manageable when I tried to maintain a good dose of protein. I ate a lot of peanut butter sandwiches those first few months because meat made me want to gag. Lentils are also a good source as well as black beans.

Good luck!

I agree with trying Preggie pops (or drops). They are all natural, and they really helped me with the nausea. I have seen them at Motherhood Maternity, but most recently in the baby isles of Meijer (by the nursing pads, pacifiers, etc.). Good luck!

Hi L.---I really feel for you. I had 3 pregnancies and with all 3 I had morning sickness. Hated to brush my teeth because it made me gag, and then...

I am taking classes to be a Wellness Educator and I have several books that talk about the healing powers of food. One thing you might try, when you can get food to stay down, is to eat fiber rich foods. Soluble fiber can help to absorb the excess estrogen that is in your blood stream right now. That may minimize your symptoms. Be sure to eat several smaller meals throghout the day.

These books share the usual advice of eating dry cereal, crackers or dry toast before you get out of bed. Avoid greasy, fried and spicy foods. To quell nausea, sip ginger ale or suck candied ginger. Try wearing an acupressure bracelet, such as those used to prevent motion sickness. Be sure you do not lie down after a meal.

Besides sipping flat ginger ale and sucking on candied ginger, you can make a ginger tea. The recipe is as follows: Slice a 1 inch piece of fresh gingerroot and place in a cup. Cover with boiling water and let infuse for 3 minutes before serving warm.

You can make several other teas that are good for heartburn.
Mint Tea: Place 3 tsp of chopped fresh mint leaves in a cup. Cover with boiling water and let infuse for a few minutes. Serve warm after a meal.
Camomile Tea: Use a tea bag or place 2 tsp of ddried camomile in a cup. Cover with boiling water. Let infuse for 3 minutes before sipping.

Here is a list of some of the foods that are good for nausea and heartburn: bananas, ginger, garlic, onions and yogurt.

Each of my pregnancies was different in what would help with the heartburn and nausea. It was nectarines with my first, couldn't get enough. With my third, I lived on Subway cold cut trios. I wouldn't advise that now with the preservatives in and increased risk of colon cancer with processed meats, but I think it was the vinegar and oil combination on the sandwich that helped me. You just have to keep experimenting with what might do the trick for you.

I wish you the best of luck, and feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. I may have some additional articles I can share. Just let me know if you would like more info. Take care, it will be over soon! D.

Hello!
Ok soooo....
Prevacid is a great idea for the heartburn, for the vomiting you can go get some vitamin b6 and unisom. You will take 1 vitamin and 1/2 unisom... (or youll be sleeping :) This helps tremendously with nausea and vomiting. Also comes recommended by an ob so its safe. If this does not work talk to your doc about a perscription for anti nausea pills there are plenty that are safe. I took phenegran and its like a miracel drug. good luck!

Go to the store by some tums, malox, or rolaids and eat them. Try sucking on a mint. The red and white ones. Pepermint works to calm belly. With my first daughter i had acid like you. I also have a cid reflux problem so my dr.'s allow me to take prevacid. But if your not on some thing regularly you shouldn't do it with out talkign otyour dr. but try the malox I have issues with tums so that i couldn't chew and rolaid are ok but they don't work so well. But the malox I am not kidding with my first daughter I took thats tuff like crazy i would buy the whole shelf full eveyr week. I drank it all the time. But becareful if you drink too much you will have loose stools. so if you have a problem with constipation malox will help. Let me know how 5th works out. I am trying for my 5th but recovering from a misscary. I have 8,6,4,20months.

congrats! on the pregnancy, not the spitting/vomiting. :)
any sort of mint makes the little flap in your esophagus relax, hence making the heartburn/reflux worse. so, avoid those if you can. also, try pepcid complete tablets. they work great and are safe during pregnancy. i use them (i'm prego with #3) until the last couple months or so then i usually have to get a prescription. if the vomiting does doesn't subside, your doc can prescribe a pill or suppository to help that, too. i used one for about a month with this baby and it was a life saver!
i've read that your body just makes more mucous when pregnant, hence the excessive saliva/spitting. i had a problem drooling a lot at first, but it's gone away.....hopefully yours does, too!
but, try the pepcid, it really works!

Hi, been there done that! It is no fun! My 2nd and 4th were awful like that, and I also did the zofran...it is a miracle drug! Expensive, but worth every penny! Once I started taking it I could eat again, and started gaining some weight instead of losing it. I also used the psi-bands...they helped quite a bit, but didn't make it stop. The preggy pops actually helped too...which I suppose any super sour candy would maybe try lemonheads. As far as the heartburn, my 4th was terrible! I was taking too many tums, so the dr put me on prilosec otc...it also is a miracle drug that is preg. safe. Good luck to you, and like the other entry says, it is only temporary...even if it feels like an eternity. My 1st and 3rd children thought the toilet was for thowing up before they realized it was for tinkles :-) Hang in there, and congrats!
p.s. My 3 girls made me WAY more sicker than my son.

Hi L.,

Congratulations on your new little one! Join the club of those of us with severe morning sickness. I'm with you on this one. I'm 5 months along now--sick from the very beginning, but it has improved in the last 2 weeks. See if your doctor can prescribe Zofran for you. It really helped me. It is safe and you take it when you need it. This is my 3rd pregnancy at 40, it has been the worse in terms of morning sickness and feeling yucky mostly. I swear, if this was my first kid, I'd never probably have anymore. Here are some things I've taken that have been life savers and gotten me through many days: drink lots of sparkling water. Sparkling water like La Croix has 0 calories, 0 sodium and 0 sugar--it is great and tastes just like soda except for all the bad stuff. Secondly, eat small protein meals (if you can) like a small sandwich or a muffin with peanut butter every time you feel icky. Fruit like watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew, also worked well for me. Salads like a side salad from McDonald's also helped me. I'm sure you know this, but this helps too--lay on your left side when you sleep or watch tv. Get plenty of rest, if you can. Take a warm bath at night. Most of all, remember--it is temporary and better days are coming.

I'm having a boy, so I don't know if the sex of the baby matters in terms of sickness:-)

Best wishes,

M.

Congrats!!

The reflux was terrible with my third, is that what you have? It would wake me up vomiting. I slept in a recliner for the last half of hte pregnancy. You can incline your bed by putting something under the mattress. It wasn't enough for me but might be fore you. I ate tums, approved by doc. I didn't have too much trouble during the day, only at night, sorry I can't help you there.

Hi L.,

Congratulations! I have a couple of recommendations for you. First: mint will cause the heartburn to become worse or even appear. Second: Drink cream, even coffee cream, before the heartburn starts. A big sip or at least a tablespoon.

My best friend had terrible heartburn and spoke to her doctor. As soon as she stopped drinking her daily cups of mint tea and gave up the mints and mint gum she used every day, it stopped. When I was pregnant the first time, the nurse doing our Lamaze class told everyone about the cream trick. If you're in a restaurant and they have those little containers of coffee cream, drink one before your meal. Give it a couple minutes to coat your insides. It worked for me.

Good luck,
L.

My mom had 4 girls and a boy and was the sickest with my brother... But not sick at all with the girls... You know how your body feels. I do believe that the mom has an incling of what it is... Even if they don't "know" how to determine the answer...

I had an aunt that would walk around during her whole pregnancy with a styrofoam cup with a papertowel in it. Yes, her own personal spittoon... :-) But it worked.

Hi L.,

Talk to your doctor and ask for a prescription for Prevacid. It's like magic, I swear. We tried every other antacid for my pregnancies, and Prevacid was the only thing strong enough. If you're spitting and puking, I am assuming you need something strong :)

If you're on Medicaid they can make you jump through hoops to get Prevacid (they want documented proof that you took everything else first), in which case you can beg your doctor for samples instead.

Prevacid.

Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy!

Memories, memories...
I had that bad from anout 10 weeks on! My Dr. gave me Zantac 150's (safe for baby) and I took those twice a day, along with tums, I was good to go. I know a lot of people don't believe in taking anything while your prego. I didn't either I never even took so much as a Tylenol, but the reflux and heartburn were unbarable, and my Dr. assured me it was totaly safe!!
I also had severe morning sickness, I even had to stop working I just couldn't function until I was about 7 mo. along, Try drinking Carnation Instant breakfast's. They were the only thing I could keep down, i tried every cracker, mint and tea out there.
Good luck!!

I would find an alternative practitioner. You don't want to put any drugs in you at this point for the heartburn and it sounds like a hiatel hernia. Not a problem at all. Just means your stomach is a little out of place and needs to be 'directed' back. I have a number if you'd like. If you're in the SE Michigan area.

First of all, congratulations!!!

I'm sorry I don't really have any advice or info for you, just wanted to say that I'm 14 weeks with my fourth child and I too have had the worse experience with this pregnancy than with the others. You'd think it'd be easier/better with each one, but nope! LOL

Now that I'm into my 2nd trimester I'm beginning to feel better so hopefully you'll get some relief soon yourself!
