My 11 yo son has a red rash on his shoulders and upper back, mainly. It seems to be happening during his swim /water polo practice, becasue it is bad afterwards and then subsides a bit. He has not had this problem with swimming (even in this pool) before. My daughter is also swimming at the same time and has no problems. could this be a swimmers' itch? Ideas for treatments?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you, everyone! I have been using Lansinoh on the rash before he goes in the water, but I haven't told him it's nipple cream, LOL. It seems to help because it keeps the water away from the skin.

Great advice Erin.
A couple of things I would add. It's not because your daughter is ok with this pool that you son is, we all have different sensibilities to chemicals. Check sunscreen, add salt (sea salt) in his water (the salt helps the elimination of chlorine in the body -- use good quality salt), good shower afterwords (use organic soap). If that doesn't help I woudl recommend to check if some chemicals are stock in his kidney, that can create rashes on the skin. Good luck!

My sisters son got this, but we think it was from the sunscreen.
Also, every pool is different, as far as chlorine treatment goes, so make sure he washes really well right after swimming and that you moisturize with an aloe based lotion. It took a week or so for my nephews to clear up, but it was really funky at first. We didn't know if he got a sunburn or if it was a rash, but now we know that for some reason, the sunblock we have always used is no longer compatible with his skin.
Good luck

It could be a staff infection.

I have to wash the chlorine off really well and then moisturize or I get an itchy red rash...
YMMV
