I used Seasonique for one cycle (3 months of pills) but decided not to continue. Had a period as I was told I would after finishing. Does anyone know how long it takes to start your period again after discontinuing birth control? I could call the Dr. but she's no longer in practice!! Hoping the smart moms out there can help with this one.
Thanks!

What can I do next?

The general rule of thumb is that it can take about 3 months for your body to "sort it out" after hormonal birth control and get back to a regular pattern (whatever might be regular for you) of periods.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if you start back with regular periods after a month or so. You had your first period after the pills, which is essentially a "withdrawal" bleed from the hormones. Your body will come to realize that there are not hormones coming in anymore and will start kicking its own in...and then once you ovulate again, it should start getting back to normal. If you skip your next period (when it would be due), I wouldn't be too surprised. If 2 cycles go by without a period, find a doc...they might need to use a bit of progestin to jumpstart your cycle again.
Also, you can call any local ob/gyn and ask the question...they will likely ask you to make an appointment, which you can do...but you could always cancel it later if your cycles regulate. Besides, it can never hurt to find a new doc to have on hand if you need one! It tends to take much longer to get a new patient appointment than an established patient...so get to know them now when things aren't an emergency.

Good luck!

In my limited experience...when I got off birth control I had a period the next cycle, like usual, and then got pregnant. Be sure you take precautions b/c once off the pill, you are no longer protected. Its benefits don't stick around even for a few months.

Hello, K.!

It really seems to very by type of b/c, how long one has been taking it and the person themselves. I went off of one type spotted some and like clockwork went back to my regular cycle. Another type some years later I got it right away like I was supposed to, but then got it again (not spotting) a couple of weeks later and it jumped around until it regulated. Another time, it just remained regular. I have been on a couple of different pills and I also used depo provera for a couple of years.

Not sure how long you are waiting, but regardless if you are not wanting a baby right now, start using another type of protection right away, if you haven't, because you never know when those meds will be out of the system enough for a pregnancy to occur. Also, if you don't regulate within 2 months time, see a doctor. Good Luck!

Good Morning K., I'm not a smart momma, I'm an ole Gr ma...lol I did take BC for several yrs right before our marriage 5/71 to regulate my periods. (MAN they were hit and miss painful things)and about 2 yrs after our marriage. Anyway we had our son 10/74. So by my ole brain calculations, it didn't take long for me to become reg again. Then I tried the Diaphragm. EwwwwwwwwwwOuchie!!
I didn't like that you couldn't be spontaneous.. Stop I forgot the Thingy!! :))
I would think K. you could call any OB-GYN in your Spring Hill area and speak to them about it. Let them know your OB is no longer in practice and you would like some information.

God Bless and I hope you find the answers you need ASAP.

I was also on Seasonique and my body hated it!! I could never make it the whole 3 months without a period. My body would have one anyway! I was on it for about a year and went off of it as well. The first month off my period was right on time and continued to be on time the second month. Now the third month...still waiting for it and it was supposed to be here Dec. 30th!!! I have had 2 HPT and both were negative and finally had a blood test at the Dr. office and was neg. for pregnancy as well. The Dr. told me it could take anywhere from 4 to 6 months for my body to get back to "normal". I was also so scared to have a period off the pill for the pain and heavy bleeding...but I must say...I didn't have much pain at all and the bleeding wasn't too terrible. Hope this helps! Take care!

You could start in a month or you could spot for a couple of months before having a full blown period. If you aren't gonna use the pill and don't want to get pregnant then definately use some sort of other protection in the meantime. I'd find another doctor also. Good luck and God Bless.
