Opossum Trouble, PLEASE HELP

Hello, Ladies, my husband was in the basement on Saturday and discovered a baby opossum. He took it out of the house inside a shoe box and released it into a grove of bushes. But last night I heard noises in the basement. I'm quite sure the baby would have parents with their nest and other offspring. Thus, we may have a whole family living in our basement. YUCK! What can I do about it?

What can I do next?

I asked my husband about this since we live on 9 acres and he knows all about the "critters".

He said:

let a window/door open and chase them out

once they are gone find how they got in and seal that area

call local animal control

I wish you lots of luck.

Yes! Call a non-destroying pest control company! You could try the Fish & Game Comm for recommendations. Good luck--don't freak out!

I would call an exterminator. They can get rid of them without killing them. I guess you could try going about it yourselves, but this way they can get rid of the animals and tell you how to propperly clean after their gone. Those animals have many diseases. So, you want to be sure you clean up well after them. You can't be too safe with little ones running around, even if they don't go in your basement regularly. Hope this helps.

Critter Catchers.... they are in the phone book based out of Lititz. They will come and trap the animals and take them away into the wild (they do not destroy). I am not sure of the fee.

You probably do have a Momma and babies, and you do NOT want to confront a Momma possum protecting her babies. Call your local SPCA to get a number for a professional who can trap and release them well away from your house!

Good Luck.
