Hi!

My family is moving to Johnson County KS next month. My husband got a job in Lenexa. We have 2 small kids so need a place with good schools. Would you recommend Olathe, Lenexa, or Overland Park? Which schools in the area would you recommend and why?

Thank you!!!
H.

mmm :) my opinion is if you can live farther out of town, perhaps gardner, eudora, or even spring hill, you'd be better off. the traffic is horrible and in general it is a very entitled area. that's IN GENERAL. not everyone here (i have met some wonderful people). having said that, i live here :) lol. i personally believe that there is a higher majority of entitled spoiled people who don't have a lot of consideration for others, than in other areas. but that is coming from a country girl who moved to the "big city" lol. johnson county has a "reputation" for being full of snobs. there, i said it. lol. no offense anyone. it's a great place to live if you have plenty of money and can "live up to" their status quo.

*i read a story not long ago about how all these people are up in arms because the county had bought an old run down building which was a horrible investment, with "vague" plans to turn it into a museum or cultural center which would cost an exorbitant amount of money, because the building has "sentimantal value". their response? basically, "well, we can afford it so....."

lol. pretty much a johnson county mentality.

I have grandchildren in the Olathe district and they like it there and so did my daughter who was a para or something there for a couple of years with special needs kids. I also have grandchildren in Gardner school district. It also is very good. I think the smaller the area the better I like it but I guess the larger places like OP have good schools too. I think, if I'm not mistaken, that the Olathe school district rated highest awhile back. Blue Valley is no longer the top I think. I would visit around before you decide where to live and see how the area 'feels' as far as neighborhoods as well as schools.
Welcome to Johnson county.

You cannot go wrong anywhere in Johnson County. Olathe, Shawnee Mission or Blue Valley boast some of the best schools in the nation.

Basically, it will come down to your budget. Johnson County is constantly growing, so there is something for everyone here. The post below described an "entitled" attitude here, and while (sadly) I do agree with her, you can find your niche.

I live in Overland Park. My neighborhood is very nice and I am surrounded by easy going people and great kids. My kids go to Blue Valley Schools and we are very happy with their education. Everything I need is a short drive away and there are sooooo many parks and green spaces around.

The Kansas City metropolitan area is becoming completely revitilized and is a friendly, wonderful place to raise a family. There is so much to do here and our central location makes it easy to get anywhere you want to go.

Good luck with your move. Please feel free to PM me with specific questions. You will love it here- I promise.

Well, Overland Park is a good place to live. I would look into Oak Park Carpenter Elementary School. Both my niece and nephew went there and it was very good. Depending on where you live they would most likely go to Indian Woods Middle School, and then to Shawnee Mission South if you are still there by then. My sister has been very happy with all of these schools.
I live in west Olathe and the area I would stay away from is the Olathe North area. Olathe East area is a pretty good area and so is the Oalthe Northwest area, and part of the Olathe South area is good. These are the high schools in Olathe so you can research the neighborhoods that will feed into these schools.
I grew up in Lenexa and it is nice too. It has a smaller feel to it than Overland Park does. As for the schools go I know Sunflower Elementary is good and so is Rising Star Elementary. For Middle School they would go to Westridge Middle School most likely, and for high school they would most likely go to Shawnee Mission West. You can research these schools as well. I'm sure they have changed a lot since I was a student there!!!

My mother in law lived in Olathe, I don't know about the schools and such. I hope you enjoy Kansas though.

I know I have enjoyed my vacations in the Kansas City area, both sides of the river.....lol.

When we moved back to the KC area we looked into Olathe, OP and Lenexa. We settled on the MO side out south. If I had to choose I would say OP or Olathe (no where near Olathe North IMO).

Personally my experience with the Jonhson County side is that those that live in Leawood are the pretentious, entitle types. My siblings (much younger than I) all went to Olathe schools (graduates of Olathe East).

I don't think you an really go wrong in any of them education wise.
