Not Gaining Any Weight

I just had another prenatal visit and found out I lost another 1/2 a pound this week. So far I am down 3 1/2 pounds since I got pregnant. I'll be 17 weeks tomorrow. I started off heavy, but am still concerned about the loss. Haven't really had much in the way of morning sickness with this pregnancy to blame the loss on. I was sick with my first pregnancy and had already gained back what I lost in terms of weight plus a pound by this point. I haven't been able to ask my OB about it because I haven't seen him since like 12 weeks -- he's been passing me off to the nurses, which is another whole issue. I'm sticking it out until my 20 week u/s and then switching to another practice. Anyway, has anyone else not started to gain by this point?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the advice. I'm definitely seeking out a new OB. To complicate things last night I had a gush of fluid. Couldn't tell what it was. Called the oncall (hospital) number only to be told no one from OB was on call and to call the office in the morning. FINALLY got seen this afternoon by the nurse (AGAIN). Not sure what is going on... the watch and wait approach. Litmus and ferning were both negative, but there was a lot of fluid there. Cervix is closed. I hope this baby stays put.

UPDATE -- Was still leaking yesterday. OB REFUSED to see me and sent me to the ER. Ferning was negative, but Litmus was positive for amniotic fluid. Immediate ultrasound in the ER. Baby looks GREAT! Fluid and cervix look good. I HAVE A NEW OB!!! Go for a follow-up on Monday, but the baby seems fine. Feeling much better about everything. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO GAVE ME THE PUSH I NEEDED TO GET A NEW OB! :)

I was very low on weight gain my whole pregnancy. I went back and forth and in the end only gained about 15 pounds. Don't worry to much. I say get a new doctor and have him make sure the baby is ok. Other than that don't worry too much. You aren't really loosing that much in the big picture. Every pregnancy is different so don't compare to your first too much. Hope that helps!

When I was pregnant with my first son I lost weight the entire time. In all I lost 12 pounds. Once I had my son I was back into my pre-pregnancy clothes 4 days later. My son turned out to be very healthy. I ate better foods while I was pregnant so that is what my Dr. figured the weight loss was due to.

I had the same problem. I lost 13 with my second child in the beginning--I ended up gaining it back for a total of 29 total weight gain over the entire pregnancy. My twins were similer. I only gained a total of 31 lbs with them. I lost a total of 17 during the pregnancy before the weight started sticking. I don't think you have anything to worry about.
Good luck!!

Hi H.
I would place a call at the ob office and demand you speak to the doctor or see him, evem threat if you have to (if something happens to my baby i will hold you responsible) whatever to get to see him
i am by any means not implying something is wrong BUt the weight loss and lack of weight gain during pregnancy needs to be checked.
good luck

I lost weight with all 4 of my pregnancies in the beginning. 15 lbs with with first. I wasn't sick or anything. I have no explanation of the weight loss, but i did end up gaining between 25-35 lbs with each pregnancy. Actually with my last pregnancy I lost 5 lbs then only gianed 10 lbs by week 30, but in the last 10 weeks, i gained another 15-20.
What would concern me more though, is the fact that your doctor is putting you off like that. If he will not talk to you and keeps passing you off, I would definately switch practitioners. I fired my OB when I was 22 weeks with my daughter. It was the best thing I could have done. If he is not treating you well prenatally, there is a good chance he will not treat you well in labor and delivery.

I was so sick during my preg, the only thing that I could easily keep down was ice cream. I lost a lot of weight and after I had my kids I looked good. My dr always watched my weight and we never worried about it. My kids are all fine.

Hi. I didn't gain any weight at all w/ my son until I was about 5 months along. I lost a few pounds in the beginning like you did & was a little bit chubby to begin with. My problem was once I started gaining weight, it came on really fast & the stretch marks were wicked. I ended up gaining a total of 32 lbs in 4 months, pretty much all in my belly. I wish I had known about cocoa butter at the time, but by the time anyone mentioned it to me, it was too late. I wouldn't worry too much about it, if your doc was worried, he'd let you know, I'm sure.
