Can anyone tell me the difference between the Nintendo DS and DS Lite? I didn't know if one was for younger kids verses the other being geared towards older kids. Are 5 1/2 yr olds too young for one of these handhelds? Also, are any of the games educational? we currently have the leapster but even with many different games, she seem to be getting bored with it.

What can I do next?

DS Lite has some educational games as well as non-educational games.

The only difference between the two is that the lite is slimmer. I recommend getting the DS lite as they fit into pockets easier and have brighter screens. The Game Boy system is outdated and have no new games being made for them. Oh, and you might consider getting the newest version of the DS which is called the Dsi00which includes a camera and other extra features. Good luck.

The difference is the ds lite has a back light so you can see the screen better and can play it in the dark...i dont think they are too young for it but i would suggest getting a case and some screen protectors for it..oh and buy some extra stylus pens for it :)..also they have a ton of age appropriate games for a 5 yr old.

I think the DS lite is just a bit smaller (its thinner) no other changes I know of. I would recommend a game boy for a younger child although you can not buy new games in stores but if you have a game stay that buys and sells used games that is good. Or ebay you can find new or used games. The reason I don't recommend this for younger kids is because many games use 2 screens and it gets confusing at times and they may get frustrated, also there is the styles and can easily damage the screen. Someone once told me that they can break easy as well when flipped open to hard or something. My son has one but he is 10 we upgraded him to DS and gave his younger sister the gameboy.
I don't really think any of the games are educational. If you want educational look at V smile (pocket is portable) or leapster. They have great fun/educational games.
