any tips on potty training my almost 3 year old daughter during the night? we are golden during the day and up til 2 nights ago using pull-ups during naps and bedtime. we used them all up and kept telling her when they were gone she would be wearing her big-girl undies to bed and would have to get up and go pee on the potty if she had to in the night. the first night we changed her bedding 3 or 4 times. she was really hard to wake up and only woke up on her own (after wetting the bed) once. last night i woke her up at 10:30 and she was dry and then went on the potty, although i'm not sure she even was aware of it. then she fell out of bed at 12:45 a.m. and so i took her to the potty then, she was still dry. but then she woke up this morning around 7:30 wet. i'm not sure the best approach to this or if i'm pushing the matter. i don't want to give up too soon and i'm so tired of buying those darn pull-ups! she knows when she has them on that she can pee or poop in them and not have a mess. any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!

What can I do next?

Hey C.,

Don't give up girl :) All three of my kids (now 3, 5,and 6) were day trained at 18 months and night trained around 2 1/2. One thing you could try is not buying those pull-ups and stopping drinks for a couple weeks around 6:30 or 7. Buy underwear and those plastic underwear covers to go over them. The kids can't feel themselves wet in the pull-ups..but when they feel the warmth (gross right!) in the plastic undies they wake themselves up...the first couple times they'll go a lot and then little by little they'll only go a tiny bit before waking themselves and going to the potty...and big rewards they'll get because you'll be so proud. Give it two weeks. Stock up on laundry detergent...:) Good luck you can do it! :)

Many children aren't potty trained during the night until they are 4 or 5- they just sleep too sound to wake up. My son, who is almost 4, still wears a pull-up at night. He is only wet occasionally but it sure beats having to change his bedding. I wouldn't push the issue or she could totally rebel and revert back to diapers. Good luck.

C., I have 5 sons 4 of whom are old enough to be potty trained but they were all at least 4 before they went all night dry. Its not their fault they can't help it. What I did on all their beds was to get a waterproof mattress pad, that way in case there are any leaks or accidents the mattress is protected. Just keep using those pull ups, and if you do happen to have a dry night save that pull up and reuse it!

Childrens bladders are immature and she can not help this. It is common for kids to have this problem, and it can last up till they hit puberty. I would not make a big deal about it at all and continue using the pullups at night.

My four year old is still not potty trained at night. We switched from pull ups to good nights and call them bedtime underwear. They will eventually get it on their own. The most I can tell you is to limit fluid intake at least an hour before bed and get her up when you go to bed so she can use the potty (not an option for me because he wakes up completely and doesn't go back to sleep). Her bladder may not be big enough to go all night yet. Be patient. It will happen. I don't know of any adults whom aren't potty trained. :)

C.,
I think she is way too young to be expected to stay dry through the night. Most young children sleep too deeply to know when they have to use the bathroom. My children's doc told me once that is normal for children up to six yrs.old to wet the bed at night. All three of my children stayed in pullups at night until they were almost 5. They just aren't developmentally ready to wake at night to potty for a while yet. I know the pullups are a pain, but so is changing the sheets every night. Good Luck and be patient!
