Help we have just recently moved into our new house and we are over ran with gnats. They are everywhere!! Does anybody have any recommendations on how to get rid of them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
My mother in law told me to cover a bowl of apple cider vinegar with plastic wrap and poke it with a knife. They get trapped and can't get out.
First, get rid of any and all fruits on the counters, then pour bleach down every drain in the house. Make sure that there isn't anything in the pantry or outside that is rotting (veggies, mold, etc.) and put up a bait: Place one banana next to your sink-put up a fly strip right above it for a few days. Works for us! Make sure to keep the garbage disposal very clean and any yucky food trash secure. Just generally try to keep the house clean and dry!
I grew up in W'ford and now live in Arlington, so I know how bad the gnats get!
I agree that bleach should do the trick down all the drains. Or if you have some baking soda and vinegar that would do it too. It's fun to watch bubble up too ")

i use that traps that are very sticky and you can hang them. also, pour bleach down the drains in the kitchen and bathrooms. if you do the vingear thing, use vinegar and dish soap. put it in a cup near a bad area with them. the soap coats the wings and the vinegar attracts them (they are also called vinegar flies...lol go figure right?). change trash often. we had them pretty bad the last two weeks, but doing all theat eliminated them. good luck!
I also use the vinegar method, but I found red wine works too. (someone gave me a bottle and I dont drink wine) I put a little liquid soap in it and mix it up, it creates a film that makes them stick pretty good.
Ours do come up from the drains, so the drain tricks are a new one for me, I am going to try them next time too!
find out where they are breeding, and destroy it.
Also, garbage cans can run rampant with them... even just a couple of days and they can multiply.
If they are coming up from the drains this is a frequently asked question on our local radio show (hokey I know...but it answers any question anyone ever has). The vinegar and baking soda do the trick. Let it bubble alot. Do not run water down it till after it has finished bubbling. These are different from fruit flies. If you have fruit flies then make sure all fruit is gone and be sure there isn't a bag of potatos rotting somewhere!
I've heard of vickifabrycki's cider vinegar/plastic wrap trick too! Curious to know if it works.
Definitely flush all toilets multiple times and put water down ALL drains--laundry tubs, floor drains, basement toilets, etc.
Ugh, they are so annoying! We keep getting them every summer, too. I have tried all kinds of remedies, from vingar to actually leaving some beer in a glass out because it seemed to attract them. I've found that the easiest and fastest way is to fill a spray bottle with some water and dish detergent and simply spray them out of the air. You can wipe them up with a paper towel and done! If you keep your fruit in the refridgerator over the summer, you shouldn't have too much trouble after that. But I admit, I never seem to be able to get rid of all of them, there are always one or two left...
