Netflix Through Xbox... How Does It Work?

We are finally going to get internet, but no cable. We don't watch enough tv to make it worth the cost... But we do like to watch movies, and there are a few series that I enjoy. We are considering going with Netflix... But I have no clue how it works. My SIL has a computer (she is living with us) but we don't. We do have an xbox though, and I have heard that you can use netflix through that. How does that work? Do you have to buy internet time through the xbox in addition to our regular internet provider? If we use sil's computer, do we just hook it to the TV long enough to stream whatever we want to watch, or does it have to be plugged in the whole time we are watching? Is netflix really as good as they make it seem, or would we be better off sticking to redbox rentals? Lol.

What can I do next?

My SD uses Netflix through her Wii (basically a game system is just a computer). It works a lot like OnDemand and she just needed an internet connection and a hookup to the TV. She leaves it plugged in the entire time she is watching the movie/show/whatever. I think NetFlix has more variety.

Streaming means it's coming over the internet to the computer to the TV. Without all the pieces plugged in during the entire time you are viewing, you would not be able to watch the show. Think of it like having a cable box. You need the cable connected to the box connected to the TV to watch the show.

It's really easy. It's only about $8 a month (that is for streaming only, no dvds), we have been doing this for years.

Since we have no cable, we watch all of our shows through Netflix. Of course, they are usually a season behind, like I will have to wait a year before seeing the current season of The Office, but it's still nice to have. For current seasons and shows, you can get them through hulu on xbox. but it can be expensive.

As for the technical questions, we just went to our inlaws house for Christmas. My husband didn't bring our xbox, but he was able to sign in to his dads xbox to access our netflix account. You can watch movies/shows online as well.

You don't need to buy additional internet time for xbox netflix streaming. If you are using your sil's computer, you can just go to their website and login to your account and watch it on her computer. If you mean, can you piggyback the internet provider on your sil's provider? Yes, since it is in the same house, it does need to be plugged in the to internet.

You need to be an xbox live gold member, which is about $50 a year. It's actually really easy to set up. Everything is explained here:

Sign up for a 2 week free membership with netflix.

Log onto xBox Live

Scroll to the BIG RED NETFLIX window.

Click.

Enter your email address (you only have to do this once), that you signed onto netflix with for the trial.

Pick a movie or TV show. Play.

That easy.

Netflix will bill you after your free trial is up. You can watch a gazillion movies, or none. It's the same flat monthly fee. Personally, I manage my queue on the computer (soooooo much easier), but it's not necessary.

HULU+ is also on xBox

You have to have internet service. You have to either have the internet connected to the xbox with either a cable (you know phone jack cable thing) or have the wireless adapter. There is no extra internet charge for doing this.

You also have to have an xbox live membership. I believe it is 50 bucks a year.

Once you log into xbox live you can go to netflix and get a free limited time membership. They will give you a number you need to log into the computer once. (at least we did when we first signed up over a year ago lol)

Then you are set to go!

Xbox live is adding alot of new content! They have a UFC channel, they will have HBOgo, youtube, espn, and zune! Most of these you pay to either rent a movie or you can buy them too. We no longer rent movies anywhere! If we want to see a new release we just rent it on Zune! It is available for only 24hrs after you rent it. Once the time period is up it just disappears lol! No late fees!!
