I am desparately in need of childcare for my 3 yr old autistic son on Saturdays from about 8:30am to 4pm until 8/19 (6 days) while I am in class. I am a graduate student new to the area and I badly need someone to care for my son while I am in class and his father is at work. He is not potty trained and he will need a lot of attention. I really need someone with patience and understanding that can keep up with an active little boy! He is very affectionate and sweet, but he does not talk or communicate well. He loves to play outside, swim, watch his favorite movies/cartoons, and just go,go,go!!! I am open to any suggestions, I have looked for both in-home care and daycare facilities, but I have not successfully found the right place for him that is both appropriate for him as well as affordable. Please help!!!

What can I do next?

I would be glad to help you out. But there is a detail. Would it be okay for him to go to my son's soccer game Saturday Morning? If not he can stay with my 17-year-old daughter at my home. Let me know if I can help. I have references.

Hi S.,

You had mentioned that you would like to meet other parents. I am a speech-language pathologist. I have a music based, parent-child program for young children with special needs, called S.T.A.R. Music (Speech Therapy And Recreational Music). If you would like information on that, it would certainly be my pleasure to discuss the program with you, and I invite you to visit us at www.startherapyprograms.com. We also offer FREE enrollment in our social outings group called
Play Pals. We have several outings during the year. Your only cost is if there is an admissions price, or anything you might like to purchase at a location.

Thursday, August 3rd, we will visit Grisham Therapy Zoo in McKinney. We will meet there at 10:00. Following the Zoo activities, we will sing songs, and you are invited to bring a picnic lunch. The cost is $5.00 per person. If you would like to enroll in Play Pals, simply e-mail your name, child's name and age, e-mail, and phone number. Then you will be informed about upcoming events, and have the opportunity to meet a variety of other parents and children.

I wish you much luck in your childcare search. And of course, all the best in graduate school.

Best Regards,

S.

Hey S.! With our busy schedules it's hard to keep in touch! I would love to watch your son on Saturdays! You're welcome to bring him here. Jude would love to have a playmate! Or I could come to your home, which ever you prefer. I don't start school until September so my summer schedule is open. I can work on communication with him and anything else in his IEP. OH, there's a potty training workshop coming up for kids with autism. Here's the info:

Free Seminar for Parents Wed July 19: Potty training children with special needs
Hosted by North Texas Autism Education Center and Wayman Learning Center
Wednesday, July 19
7:00 9:00 p.m. (sign-in/refreshments at 6:45 p.m.)
Presented by Gail Wayman, M.Ed., Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)
Location: Wayman Learning Center, 5170 Village Creek Dr. #200, Plano, TX 75093;
Map to location at http://www.waymanlearningcenter.com/.
This presentation will include specific steps, including antecedents and consequences, for toilet training children with special needs, based on the work of Richard Foxx and Nathan Azrin. These procedures are designed to teach the child to self-initiate elimination in the toilet when the child feels the need to do so. A child does not need a vocal verbal repertoire nor manding (requesting) repertoire in order to achieve mastery. Handouts will be provided.
Free of charge but confirmed reservations are required to ensure a seat and handout. For reservations, please email Kim Stewart at ____@____.com with your name, email address, and phone
number. Confirmations will be sent via email.

S., let me know what it in your price range to pay for Saturday childcare and let's see if we can work something out. Oh, if you're little boy likes airplanes, theres an organization that take kids with disabilities up in airplanes for free and actually lets the kid fly it some. www.challengeair.org to register. Their next flight day is in September in Mesquite. It's totally free. Jude did it this past May and just LOVED it!

Also, that free aquatic therapy program is going on now at the Dallas Presby hospital. www.differentstrokesswimschool.com click on the link to the H2OPE program. It's also free. They meet on Sundays at either 1 or 1:45. Jude is in the 1:45 class.

Again, let me know how I can help. I would love to spend some time with your little one. I can definitely meet the requirements you listed in your email.

Best regards,

R.
