My daughter is 8 and has the worst leg cramps at night. I give her a hot water bottle, but does anyone know if i can give her something in her diet to reduce these cramps at night.

What can I do next?

Hi D.:
When our children become more active, are involved in more physical activities, wether it be at school,or playing outside with friends, they can overwork their muscles. They won't feel it at the time, however they will waken with terrible cramps.Children also tend to worry about their bodies at pre-adolescent age. When they experience pain like this, they worry something horrendous is going on.Its important to reassure your daughter, that cramping is normal and this is something that you too have gone through. It will pass.I told my son, that his legs are stretching and growing so fast, that they cramp sometimes.I told him to slow down...He's growing to fast!A good multivitamin with plenty of potassium, magnesium and calcium..even vitamin C and E all will help regulate muscle contraction. This is a simple remedy for a big problem. A Banana a day has alot of potassium, but it could constipate her.It would benifit your daughter, to stretch her legs before going to bed. Laying down, and (slowly) bringing up her legs stretching her muscles. If she gets a cramp during the night, you need to massage the cramp, going upwards toward the heart.and then a little tylenol, and a warm water bottle or warm compress will help soothe her.I wish you and your (growing daughter) the very best. when pregnant i get bad calf cramps and my midwife recommends the jogger stretch before bed and extra milk. it helps me a lot. and if you get them anyways if there is a tile floor close to her bed or anything cool standing on something cold helps the blood leave the cramping area and head towards the feet which always makes me feel better.

My daughter had this as well. In addition to previously mentioned bananas, you can buy OJ that has potassium added (Minute Maid brand, I think). Have her do some leg stretches before bed too.
