My son knows when I say grandma is here who I am talking about. Neither of us want her name to be grandma..I have looked on-line for name ideas but they are mainly old sounding ones like mama, nana, grammy, etc...I want something that sounds fun and youthful..ANY IDEAS? I need ideas for grandma, and grandpa..thanks!

What can I do next?

My twins call my mom "Bobbie". She loves it and they can say it. My dad came up with "Banana" because his wife wanted to be "nana" and he thought they should match. Sometimes kids will just come up with their own names. Good luck!

My girls have an "extra" set of grandparents (some close family friends), and they wanted to be called "Yaya" and "Papo". I *think* these are Greek in origin---not sure but we think it's cute! :)

My husband's mom wanted a more youthful name. She chose to be called "Mimi." My mom, on the other hand acts older than she really is; she chose "Nana." Both grandpas were named by our daughter. She calls them "PopPop A." and "PopPop G." except that the initials are only used when talking about one or the other of them. When addressing them personally, they're both just "PopPop"

Personally, I think "Grandma" needs to decide what she wants to be called. At least in my family this is what happened. My moms mom and my dads mom wanted to be "Grandmother" and thats what we call her. I remember she would definately correct us if we tried to call her something else. I don't really understand "fun and youthful"....no offense. A grandma, grandmother, nana, mammaw, etc... is just what it is not an indication of age.

Talk to her and see what she wants. I have friends that have made up things and it has ended up really confusing for their kids, so if you do use something other than a traditional name just make sure it is not something crazy like "Nunu" or "GoGo" (No, I didn't make this up!)...does that make sense?

My oldest daughter calls my MIL NENE, she could not say grandma and came up with it all on her own. Now she is four and still uses its. My MIL likes it well because she is young only (42). Now she calls all her other Grandmas either Nana or grandma and great grandma is G-G-Maw. As for granpas she calls all of the poppa. My youngest can not talk yet but i am sure when she can this is what she will call them. Hope this helps.

My parents are called...Grandmama and Grandpapa, kids love to say them, they stretch it out. My MIL who did NOT want to be called Grandma came up with CiCi...it really seems to work. FIL is PawPaw. Hope you find what works that your son can pronounce. Sometimes it is fun to hear them come up with one. Best Wishes.

Allison, I called both my sets of grandparents..."grandma/grandpa Coopwood" and the other "grandma/grandpa Rodriguez" Looking back, it was really good for me to realize my heritage and where I came from. Of course, as a kid, I really didnt think about that. Now that I am grown, my kids call my parents, "nanny and pappy" thier father's parents are called "granny and poco" My son made up poco when he was little because he couldnt pronounce grandpa. My second husband's mother was also called granny by her grand kids, so as a solution we call her (my new mother in law) "granny mable". Anyhoo...It really is the relationship that matters the most.

Hello,
My son started calling my mom "nana", and my mother in law "mimi".
My mother in law tried to get him to keep saying gamma, but he never could, and one day he just started saying mimi!
I don't know if that helps you any, but it's not grandma!
Good Luck to you!

My dad and step-mom could not think of any name that they wanted to be called, so I took the first letter of their last name "K" and added "ma" and "pa" to the end of it. They are now K-maw (pronounced kay-maw) and K-pa. My step-mom is only 34 years old. LOL!! She doesn't feel as though the name K-ma makes her sound old...haha!! Hope this helps.

Why not let your child come up with a name on their own. Is it you or the grandparents that have the problem with grandma and grandpa.

My very youthful and energetic mom worked with my son to see what she should be called and they both came up with Mimi. She liked it because it sounded more fun than grandma and he liked it becuase he could actually say it. His other grandma wanted to be called Gran which took him much longer to be able to say. Both grandpas ended up being Papa.

Here's something different--my step-father is Grandy.

Or, adding more ideas along the lines of foreign language names meaning grandmother and grandfather--my husband's parents are German so it's Oma and Opa. That may be a little old sounding but an idea for anyone else reading this who may be wanting something different but easy! (So, maybe an adaptation of that in America could be Gma (Geema) and Gpa (Geepa)???) :)
