Nanny's Last Day. Should We Do Something? - Chicago,IL

Our beloved nanny is parting ways with us after 6 years. Our kids will be in school, and we just don't need her anymore.
I feel like we should do something, but I'm not sure what's appropriate. We will truly miss her, and she adores our kids.

Do others do anything special? I don't have many pictures of her with the kids, unfortunately.

What can I do next?

I hope that's a rhetorical question about whether or not you should do something. You said in the last post she has raised them for 6 yrs. since they were newborns and that she was pretty much faultless.

YES! You should do something, not only for her sake, but also for the sake of your children. Think of the message it would give to them of the insignificance of those who care for them and who they care about if you did nothing.

Whatever you do should probably at the least include you NOW taking a very nice photo of her and children and giving it to her framed. The children could write her letters or make a list or "poem" about their favorite things, qualities, activities with Nanny. They could draw pictures for her. Put it all on a poster or make it nice and frame all that too or make it into a book like on Shutterfly titled What We Love about "Nanny" or 10 Things We Love About "Nanny".

Maybe a charm bracelet with charms on it that the children pick out that reflect their 6 yrs together or their favorite activities together or Nanny's qualities.

I think taking a picture with her and the children together would be a great idea. You could get one done, or, since I think you definitely SHOULD do something special for her, maybe go to a lake (which makes for beautiful scenery in the background) have a picnic, let the kids and her spend some time together doing something fun. That will be their last memory of her, therefor a great memory to have forever, and pictures to truly remember the special day.

Yes! By now you must know her well enough to think of something really thoughtful. Its going to be a real loss for your kids that she's not regularly going to be in their lives. Take pictures with her while you can. Our first nanny left us when she moved away to college which I know is different. We went to her JC graduation and have kept in contact with her since. We gave her a generous graduation and last day gift. The kids made her cards and decorated a cake. We took her out to eat with us as a family to say goodbye a week later. Whatever you do make it unique and something to know she would treasure too.

Hands down yes! My after school nanny who was with us for 1/2 a school year I took a picture and gave her a note and $ for graduation. If I had someone with us for 6 years I would do something much grander and more meaningful as well. Ideas:

Write her a card telling her how much she has meant to your family. Have the kids write her letters or make her pictures. Get her a gift. Have a family dinner with her. Just ideas.

not sure why nina H is so angry with you, but heavens yes, do something! and pictures would be a great place to start.
get her flowers. have the kids make her homemade gifties. plan every-other-month luncheons or tea with her. make sure she knows that she will get glowing references. get her a nice gift card to her favorite restaurant.
but the first thing to do is get a GREAT pic of her with the kids and make sure she has it in a nice frame.
