My OBGYN Found a Lump in My Left Boob

Hello!
I had my annual pap on Monday & my doc did a breast exam & found a lump in my left boob. I am exclusively breastfeeding my 6 month old son. I remember feeling this a month ago or so, but I had a clogged duct, so I thought that was it & I never felt for it again. I know that I should have. I just forgot about it. I also have a 2 year old. I am super busy & let this get away from me.
Anyway, I am wondering if any of you have ever had this while nursing? I dont think it's a clogged duct as I dont have any pain. My doc says it's about 2 cm in size. He is sending me for an ultrasound on Monday. And will go from there. He thinks it could be a cyst or a clogged duct. of course, cancer is a concern of his as well. It is not uncommon for me to have lumps as I have fibro whatever boobs, aka lumpy boobs. But they have always been small, rice krispie size & they come & go throughout the month for me.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me as I am terrified of something horrible. I have 2 young kids that I want to be around to raise.
Thank you!!
Happy New Year!!

So What Happened?

First, I want to thank you all for your kind responses. And second, I thought I'd let you all know the outcome. Turns out it is a fluid filled complex cyst. Nothing suspicious. The radiologist wants to re-check it in 6 mos. We'll see if my doc feels the same way. I dont know if they will drain it or not. It doesnt bother me at all, so I'm guessing they won't.
Thanks again for all of your support!!!

Try not to worry to much about it for now until you get the results back from the ultrasound. I had to go for one about a month ago as my doc felt something, but the ultrasound came back clear and it was probably just lumpy boobs. It's not worth getting worried about since it's probably nothing, and stressing won't make it any better anyway. Be positive and have a wonderful new year, hope all goes well for you!!!
PS If the doc was really worried they would probably have scheduled a mammogram right away rather than an ultrasound.

Good for you for having your annual PAP. I hate those things and forget them.
I've had clogged ducts last for a few days with my first kid but she did always nurse them away or they turned into a mastitis lump. Since you have lumpy boobs, it could be a fibroid cyst. Your doctor will find out.
Since you are afraid of breast cancer, let me go ahead and address it. My mom is a 15-year survivor of breast cancer. It is gone. She is cured. She had a mastectomy, with a tummy tuck that took the belly fat and made a new boob out of it. It's a major operation, but it was a success. They tried a lumpectomy, and they didn't get clean margins, so they had to take the whole breast. She had to take Tamoxifen for five years after the surgery, and I'm not sure if they've done anything since then. I don't think so, but I could ask her for you if you want.
Even if it is breast cancer, you are catching it early, and you will still be around for your kids. They've made great strides in research. If it is cancer you may have to stop nursing and switch to formula, but that's a minor thing in the grand scheme, isn't it? It's normal to be afraid, but let's see what the diagnosis is, and you might be lucky; a simple outpatient lumpectomy could get the whole thing and you could still nurse your baby. There are lots of ways this could end up well even with the worst case scenario. Best of luck to you.

I have a smaller lump in my right breast. I noticed it shortly after my son stopped breastfeeding. They believe it is a calcium deposit, but are monitoring it closely. I have talked to other women who have had similar situations. Maybe it has something to do with your son's feeding habits changing? Make sure you monitor it closely, but don't let yourself get too worried about it. My grandmother is a breast cancer survivor (10 years cancer free), so even in the worst case scenario, there is hope :) Hope this helps.
Happy New Year!

I have nursed my kids before but never experienced that. First do not get excited. We as women always have challenges that we will face and then just know you are not alone even though you do not see the faces of us that respond we care, and will pray all is well. Keep your head up think positive and believe what you want to receive that it is only cyst that come and go. Some things come in our lives just for us to get to place where we have not been in a long time. Praying and just thankful for today. You know Hebrews 11:1 states now faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. You really don't have to see it first, just believe. Hope this helps you.

June 2008 I felt a lump while washing in the shower and thought nothing of it at first because I, too, have always had fibrous, lumpy breasts. I had stopped, after 14 months, nursing my second daughter about 3 months prior. I always seemed to have clogged ducts while nursing. Something in my head clicked, however, after I initially blew it off and I had my husband feel it after I got out of the shower.

After trying for over 2 years to get a transfer to Florida (where my family is) from California we had finally gotten it only a couple of weeks before this. That same day I felt the lump I said to my husband: "That's why we finally got the transfer, so I could be by my family when I'm going through chemo." I freak out every time I think of that comment I made because I really didn't think is was anything more than a swollen nodule which I've always had but obviously something inside me just knew...

The nurse at the breast clinic said it moved too much to me a tumor and was probably just a cyst and I felt so relieved and I really believed her - after all, I was only 38 years old! June 25, 2008 (after having gone a few days prior for a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy all in one day - because the mammogram was suspicious) I received the dreaded call - breast cancer. I could go on and on but I won't here. I'll tell you, though, that it is now nearly a year and a half later and I am alive and cancer free. I am not the same person I was - mentally, emotionally and most especially physically, but I'm working on it all. I have two daughters, 3- and 4-years old and I plan on being around for them for a long time (I hope).

I started publishing articles online a few months ago and wrote many about my cancer with a whole bunch of information and resources - you can view them all from my profile page here: http://hubpages.com/profile/lily+rose

I also wrote all about my cancer journey on my new website: http://myjourneythroughbreastcancertreatment.com

My intent was to be able to help at least someone. You can reach me direct through here, or either of those links if you'd like to talk or ask anything about my experience, however, I hope you don't have to because your test comes back negative for cancer! Best wishes...

It is always better that you check, it is always scary when they find something like that. You can't let the other stories you might hear stress you out. Just go on Monday and try not to worry too much, especially if you are nursing.

Just go for the ultrasound then wait for the results or what the doctor thinks is best for the next step but do not worry yourself!! I too am lumpy and have a history of BC in my family so have been sent by doctors for mammos & ultrasounds since I was a teen. Now they upped the start from 40 to 50 yrs old and I have already been going almost yearly for over 20 yrs, my regret is all that radiation will probably give me cancer! LOL. Do not worry yourself, its most likely nothing.

Stay on top of it and keep in touch with your doctor...you can perhaps find herbal remedies, like castor oil, to alleviate the lumps; but bottom line, see your doctor, get the ultrasound and know that all of us have you in our prayers...wishing you a happy and healthy new year...

Try not to worry yourself into an illness while you wait for your doctor to get the follow up taken care of. My midwife/nurse practitioner (joint practice with my OB/GYN) found a lump that concerned her during my routine exam when my daughter was about 6 months old. I went over to the hospital a week or so later for a mammogram, that came out unreadable and it had to be redone (this was several years ago). Finally came back and it was nothing. Just fibrocystic breasts-- which I had never really been aware I had, though apparently for some people they can cause some discomfort. It was really hard not to freak out and stress out during the waiting for results period. But knowing that no matter what it is not a death sentence is something that is worth remembering. My grandmother (paternal side) had breast cancer when I was pre-adolescent (about 30 years ago). She just celebrated her 90th birthday in November. It was scary thinking that it there is a 'history of it' in my family... but then... reassuring that my grandmother is still cancer-free 3 decades later! I know all the thoughts you are having... worrying about your children... please don't let yourself dwell in those thoughts.

Please try not to worry. Stay busy and productive. You will find out soon enough and there will be plenty of time to worry and plan after that, if necessary. Blessings to you!

We women get all sorts of lumps and bumps in the breast throughout our lives. It's most likely nothing at all. There is a new test though called Halo. They check your fluids. Not sure how they would check yours with the breast milk but it's worth asking your dr about. It can pick up cancer 7 yrs before a mammo. Good luck and relax...you don't want your anxieties going into your baby's brain.
