My Baby HATES Baby Food, but Loves Finger Food. This Ok?

My baby is 7 1/2 months old and has 6 teeth, and is a great chewer. She usually eats cheerios, raisins, bananas, watermelon, yo-baby yogurt, gerber graduate meals, etc., but she HATES baby food. I've tried all different flavors of the 3rd foods, and she just makes mad faces at me and turns her head or tries to grab the spoon away from me. We usually give her bites of what we're eating and she nurses every 3 hours or so. She weighs 20lbs already, so I'm not worried about her weight, but I just want to make sure that skipping baby food is ok.

What can I do next?

My son didn't care for the baby food and ate mostly finger food. He lived and he is 17 & 6 ft 1"!!! He's very healthy. Best to you:)

My daughter is the same way. She'll eat the vegetable baby food and that's it. Have you tried some of those 3rd foods? Eww! I usually try anything I feed my daughter, if I wouldn't eat it then I can't expect her to. I know that sounds funny but really. haha! Anyways, your baby should be fine. Abbie (my daughter) eats table food with us and has had no problems. Avoid hot dogs though because that's the #1 food that babies choke on. Good luck!

Sounds like your baby is doing just fine....and just wants to be independent :) After I introduced the mixed veg./meat meals around 9 months, my little one started refusing anything from a spoon....I don't blame her! So just continue to offer a variety of table foods and be sure to cut everything in small pieces to avoid choking.

Skipping baby food is fine. Just be sure to chop everything small enough that she can't get it lodged in her throat, if she doesn't get it chewed well. The hotdogs are fine if each circle is cut into quarters. Sounds like she's healthy and likes a variety of table foods. 4oz of yogurt equals a serving of meat (protein). Be sure she's getting whole or enriched or fortified grains and several servings of fruit and veggies each day. Great work, Mom!

My now 3 year old did the same thing. She nursed exclusively for 10 months. I tried cereal and every flavor/brand of jar food and she wanted nothing to do with it, but she loved finger foods! My dr. said as long as she could chew it it was perfectly ok. The most important part for the 1st year is that they get enough breastmilk or formula. That is their main source of nutrition. Jar food is not neccesary. It is just advertised that way! Congrats to your beautiful baby girl. She probably just wants to be like her big sister. Sounds like you are doing a great job!

You are feeding her healthier foods than the 3rd food anyways, so keep it up!

People used to "get on to me" for feeding my baby so much table food and NO baby food at the same age. He had teeth (8 by 8 months and 16 by 12 months), so I knew he would not choke because he too was chewing. He too was nursing, so nutrition was NOT an issue.

Baby food is really for teaching baby to eat. If she is chewing and you are right there watching to be sure she is not eating too fast, skipping to table food is fine. Besides, after eating regular food, would YOU eat baby food? It looks AND tastes like . . . well, never mind.

Sounds like you're doing fine. :o)

Your baby has good taste. Have you smelled that stuff? Is it any wonder she doesn't like it? ;) You can just mush up stuff for her instead.

Think about it... Baby food is a pretty modern invention. People would just mush up table food or cut it up small. If your child doesn't like it, but eats regular food, I wouldn't worry about it.
