I'm just wondering what most moms do when their toddlers have a cold? She doesn't have a fever and she seems pretty energetic. I'm boosting her crib on one end so it's elevated to help her breathe a little easier.

we're on vacation in Telluride. I know we're not supposed to give cold medications. Just wondered if anyone had successful suggestions besides ride it out!!

Thanks so much.

Great job!

During runny nose and cough colds, I use a Humidifier or Vicks Vaporless plug-ins that helps with breathing during the night. Vicks infant rub is awesome! And don't forget the saline spray for the nose! Keep it clean and clear and she'll kick the cold fast.

Hylands makes great products for colds, but you need to check with a Pedi if they are okay since she's not two yet.

Actually, orange juice is the one that creates mucous.
When sick, stay away from it.
My Doctor told me that, and I looked it up online, and it said so there too.

For the most part, just watch out for an fever, or labored breathing (ie: as in chest colds). But if she seems fine... it usually takes, per our Pediatrician, about 7-10 days for a regular cold to taper off.

But as always, if symptoms get worse, or other symptoms presents itself, then take her to the Doctor.

Give her lots of water (water thins the mucous) and let her rest/nap when possible... "sleep" actually strengthens the immune system when sick. If you notice, people who are "run-down" or stressed or have lack of sleep, usually get sicker.

All the best,
Susan

Hi K., I would limit the milk, during a cold milk seems to build mucus in the body, more so it seems when it is hot. right now, I would increase the water and juices. J. L.

Yup...limit dairy temporarily.

- Apple Juice
- Water
- Chicken Broth

HOWEVER...if there's no fever or behavioral changes...my suspicion would actually be an allergy.

Also...if you're flying...make sure to have a decongestant on hand for 30 minutes before takeoff & touch down to avoid ear drum rupture, even if you don't use it any other time .
