Moving to Orlando

I am moving to Orlando this summer. We are moving from the Dallas TX area but are from New England. My husband's job is close to UCF and I hear that commuting is rough. Any ideas of where I should start looking for a house. We don't want to live in a planned community unless they have big yards and we can store our boat. I would rather live in an older neighborhood. Also, not to be picky but great schools (i will have a second grader and a third grader) and we would like to keep it under 300.

What can I do next?

Hello, so you moving to orlando that is soooo funny. I am from fort worth, but been living in Orlando for 4 years. In June we will be moving back to tx. We are looking at the arlington or mansfiled area. Well I can tell you this the houses here in Orlando fl are way differnt then TX. Its very hard to find a home with a big back yard trust me (lol). I can tell you that around Avlon Park there are some good homes. I love the area there its not a old neighborhood but its really nice. I work over byr ucf and the commut is rough. You really dont want to live right next to ucf not only about the commut, but the crimes are really big there.

UCF is on the Seminole/Orange county line so you have many options. In the east Orlando/Oviedo area it is difficult to find a house with a yard but they do exist. The farther out you go from UCF, the more likely you are to find an older home and/or house with a yard. That would include the outskirts of Oviedo, Chuluota, and Geneva. Semniole county is the smallest county in Florida right next door to Orange which has one of the largest school districts in the nation so Seminole schools tend to rate higher but there are many quality Orange schools on the east side of town (where you would want to be for proximity to UCF). We live on the Oviedo/Chuluota border as my husband works in the UCF research park (right next to UCF) and his commute is at most 20 minutes, depending on traffic. This is a nice area with some quality homes. I would recommend using a realator since you are looking for something specific. Good Luck and welcome to Orlando! And yes, it will cool off around October!

Hi E.,

You might want to look at the Oviedo area - it's just a little bit north of UCF, but only 5-15 minutes or so, depending on what part of Oviedo. It's Seminole County, and Seminole County schools have a much better reputation than Orange County (which is where UCF is - but it's practically on the Seminole line). Parts of Oviedo are much newer and suburban, but there are older sections, especially through the "downtown" area, where houses are older, there are nice big trees, and you could probably find a place to store your boat. I don't know what prices are looking like these days, but as they say, now is the time to buy. You can check out the area on realtor.com - main zip code would be 32765.
Good luck!

I would recommend you looking in Tuskawilla in Winter Springs. Its an older neighborhood with big yards, boats are permitted behind the front structure of the house, (as long as you are not in a smaller neighborhood within Tuskawilla), great A+ schools for all Elem. Middle and High School. Go to www.wintersprings.org for more info on the city. I have lived her for 20 years and we love it. I have 3 kids all in Elem. school. UCF is about 20 minutes from here.
I am not a realtor, but love this area.

I recommend contacting one of the other posters who said they know a realtor-- why take a shot in the dark-- you want someone who really knows the area since the Greater Orlando Area is huge. You will NOT have a problem finding a house under 300 with soooooooo many for sale right now! There are some great older neighborhoods in Winter Park and Maitland, which both have excellent schools. Just make sure your realtor knows (and confirms) the school for you-- some take a guess based on the area and there are cut offs sometimes where the next street over attends a different school. When you start looking around, come on back to mamasource and let us know which school areas and neighborhoods you are looking at and we can help some more!!

And by the way, if you are from Dallas, you are going to roll on the floor laughing at our "traffic".

When we moved here we drove all over the area and we really liked South Orlando and this area is called Williamburg. I really like the location because its very easy to get around, close to 528 (Beachline exp) and I-4 so its easy to take 528 east to 417 north and your husband will be at UCF pretty quickly.
If you need a real estate person I can recommend you someone who sells homes in our area and you will find them under 300.
The school are also very good, new and close by, shopping is close to, our grocery store (Publix) is a mile away and malls are close by too. The location is good, also we are close to SeaWorld and not far from Disney and Universal but our area is very quiet and lots of good families, you would never know that outside our area are tourist.
If you have any questions your welcome to write to me on my email address: ____@____.com
good luck, M.

Welcome!

There are so many areas as you describe. I am a native of Orlando. And old neighborhoods do have some big back yards.

As for elementary schools, I found this webside
that recommended certain ones I am not familiar with:
http://www.greatschools.net/city/Orlando/FL
I am familiar with the Conway Elementary and Kaley Elementary School areas.

You see, Orlando is spread out far and wide.
Depending on your realtor, he/she could find you a home
in south or north or east or west Orlando, or even the surrounding cities.

If you care to e-mail me, privately, I will give you the name of someone local, who is a friend of mine. She has worked in real estate before, is trustworthy and can help to give you good advice. Just let me know.

God bless!

If you are moving to the east orlando area you are gonna be hard pressed to find anything that resembles a yard like you are used to. Your best bet would be to try the Chuluota area maybe. We moved here from Atlanta 11 years ago and that was the last time we saw a yard. The public schools around here have been a huge dissappointment to us as well and with the budget cuts I think it is only going to get worse. We tried public and private before we finally found Family Christian Academy. It is on Old Cheney at Avalon Park Blvd. It is by far the best of the best school around here and half the price of a private school. Ask any parent who sends their kids there and you are sure to get a very emotional testimony of how their kids are just soaring. Good luck with the move.
