I am a first time mom to my beautiful daughter born April 4th. I'm a new SAHM seeking a moms group in the Falls Church area for socializing, support, and fun!

What can I do next?

Hi K.,
I belong to two moms groups I found on Yahoo groups for moms living in Falls Church/Arlington. The first one listed below has a larger membership base but has the requirement of one posting per month or the owner will unsubscrib you from the group. It is undergoing leadership changes in the local group. Arlingtonfcmetromommies has organized playgroups according to age of your child as well as mom's night out/morning out.

The second group is new with no posting requirement. Fantastic local leadership and a membership that is growing daily. I am sure that it will also have playgroups, moms night out, etc. Some of the same people belong to both groups. The purpose is to get moms together offline!

Hi K., you can go to Play Cafe in Reston (www.atplaycafe.com) and meet some moms there. Or you can join Mainly Music class at McLean Bible Church which is not soooo religious but it's more like a fun activity for parent and child. They provide snacks for kids and mommies too after the class. You can check the website at http://mcleanbible.org/pages/page.asp?page_id=2113.
Also lots of gymboree classes all around the area. I met some good friends at Gymboree in Tyson's area. Also you can go to Fairfax county website and join some fun classes at Recreation Centers (http://parktakes.fairfaxcounty.gov/rev1_searchmain.htm). I think they have classes for mommies and babies in stroller too.

Hi, K.. When my daughter was a newborn we joined a "new moms group" run by the local hospital company INOVA (the ones who own Fairfax Hospital and lots of others in this area). You don't have to have had your baby at an INOVA hospital to participate. This was a group facilitated by a pediatric nurse, who answered questions and listened to concerns, and moms also shared ideas--it was very helpful. The key thing is that several group members ended up exchanging e-mails and getting together as a playgroup when our kids were about 3-4 months old (by then you've asked all your questions and heard all the ideas in the group and were ready to move on!). Naturally at that age, a playgroup is for the parents and not the kids, but we stuck together and our children ended up playing together up until later years of preschool (when school schedules and other activities mean kids often give up playgroups), and today I still keep up with several of the moms and see them and their kids. Try www.inova.com and see if there are new moms' groups these days, and be sure to exchange contact information with other women there! INOVA also had "mommy and me yoga" classes to which you could bring infants and some folks met other women that way. Good luck.
