Mild Room Freshener/deoderizer

My daughter is starting preschool in the fall and the director insists on using Glade plug-ins to deoderize the room. I completely understand why she does this, but strong scents really aggravate my daughter's (and my) allergies. When we left the preschool after our meeting, we all still smelled like cinnamon even after we got home! The director said she would be willing to switch scents if I could recommend one that is not as bothersome. (Vanilla is pretty irritating to her nose too.) Has anyone found a very mild odor neutrilizing scent?

What can I do next?

I use the fresh linen in my kids bedrooms and they have no problems...I agree the other scents are very strong. We also use the glade fresh linen room spray and deodorizor where I work and it's pretty mild.

I don't think you should have to find an alternate scent! If she's allergic then I feel they should stop using it in the room. It's similar to when a kid is allergic to say peanuts and they don't allow anything peanut in the room.

Good luck!

The best remedy is an air purifier. Glad plug ins are the most toxic thing you could put in the air. Knowing how many children (and adults) there are with allergies, I am certain it bothers many.

They can find an air purifier that doesn't cost a lot and actually would benefit the staff as well. Clean doesn't have a smell.

Also an air purifier can be a tax write off for the pre-school.

Gross. I use soy candles, but guess there would not be any open flames allowed in daycare. Nothing worse than trying to mask the smell of stinky diapers w/ any kind of freshener.

I am very surprised that they are allowed to use Glade plug ins. So many are sensitive to scents.
I would rather smell a dirty diaper than the fake, sickly sweet scents that Febreeze, Glade and the like put off.
Tell the director that due to your daughters allergies that you expect that they not use ANY air freshener.
If it was a food allergy, they would HAVE to comply. I think this falls under the same category.
Good luck!

Masking odors with a deodorizer is gross in the first place. The rooms should be clean enough not to smell in the first place! Many many people are sensitive to perfumes. You should insist on no scents and better cleaning!

You should have another talk with the director... our daycare goes from infants to 5-year-olds and they don't use ANY air fresheners! Personally, I cannot stand the smell of (artificial) cinnamon OR vanilla (the real thing is okay). Besides convincing her that they are unnecessary and bothersome to some kids (including yours), you could look into the "odor eliminator" types. They usually do not have a strong (or any) smell, but just neutralize whatever odors they're trying to cover up. Some febreeze scents aren't too bad. I also hate the smell of most disinfectants (lysol & etc)--it's like flower/soap/citrus scented poop/vomit/pee/pets! Honestly, the place should just be kept clean (especially with so many kids around), and the fresheners wouldn't be needed.
Good luck!

Yikes! Not only that, everyone in the room is inhaling lots of yucky chemicals. Do some research at www.ewg.org. You can take a package of that stuff, list the chemicals and then cross-reference with the list of dangerous chemicals at ewg. I have quit using a lot of personal products based on the fact that they contain 'fragrance', which means lots and lots of potentially nasty chemicals.

I will get back to you on ideas about natural neutralizers. I am not at home and that website is on my home desk top.

Your daughter's long-term health is at risk. If they won't change, put her in another school.

Good luck and I'll get back soon. D.

My first question is why does the room need to have a deodorizer? That usally means something isn't as clean as it should be. I have to think that if it causes your daughters allergies to act up you could do something about it...kind of like some schools do not allow ANY peanut products in the school because there are so many allergic kids. It isn't right that your daughter has to suffer because the room isn't clean. A good cleaning and opening the windows should help. I think all those Glade products smell bad. The director might try putting a bowl of white vinegar out at night. White vinegar will grab up the odors over night and it shouldn't irritate anyone's allergies.

Try Air Therapy. Go on Amazon.com. It comes in different scents and the original one smells like fresh squeezed oranges. They all smell so delicious. Kind of pricey, but worth it and it's all natural.

Hi A.,

I agree with all the other Moms. Masking an odor, and that's all it is, can be dangerous. Plug ins actually mess with your olfactory glands and your neurological system. Why anyone would want to stir their little brains up when sitting in a classroom is beyond me. If your daughter is extra sensitive, I would speak with the director about it. I'm sure I have some documentation on these things and other air fresheners. If you'd like, I'll be glad to forward them over to you.

Regards,

M.

They are not suppose to use things like that because of allergies! Maybe you should look into another school. Why insist on using them??? All 3 of my kids along with myself, are very sensitive to stuff like that! Especially Glade plug ins! If your child is going to be there for any length of time, and multiple days a week, she will get sick!
