Microsuede/Microfiber Couch

We are looking to replace our couch and love seat. They are both Durahide (fake leather) and have literally fallen apart in the 3yrs that we have had them. This is very disappointing, the set was $1200 new. We are looking at a very nice microsuede set that I really like. My concern is its durability. We have a newborn son, 2 large dogs and 2 cats. The dogs are not allowed on the furniture, but the cats are. The company says they can apply a scotch guard coating that will help protect it from stains, and has a warranty that guarantees they will fix it if it tears or gets stained. I just dont want to spend that kind of money again if its going to fall apart in a few years. Im looking for anyone with experience with microsuede, positive or negative!

So What Happened?

We went ahead and got a microfiber set. We are very excited for it to come in!! We got the warranty that covers all stains, rips, burns and tears (even from pets, and got that in writing!) for 5yrs. Thanks everyone!!!

Have you thought about getting it reupholstered in the same material and then putting a slipcover over it? It might be cheaper in the long run. Also if it is only 3 years old and the springs and cushions are still good...this might be an option

We have a newer (1 yr old) microfiber couch, and I am very very pleased with it. We got the warranty/scotchguard treatment, and I literally take a damp rag to my couch... like it there is stuff dried on it, like poptart for instance, I take a wet rag and it wipes RIGHT OFF.. no issues at all. We have two kids , 3 and 5... but no pets. As far as kids go, I think you can't go wrong w/ this fabric. I hope this helps!

Hi, C.. We purchased a microfiber couch from NFM in February. As of right now I am happy with it. We also had a scotch guard put on and we have a company will come and fix it under a 5 year warranty. IMO, having 2 cats and 2 dogs and children in the home, it won't stay perfect forever. We have 2 cats in the house and are scratchers. We had to invest in a spray bottle for them to knock off the scratching on the furniture. Children, husbands, and even ourselves can be dirty. We created the "no eating on furniture" rule and have stuck by so far. What I am trying to get at is there is no 'perfect' couch that will last forever unless it is made of wood and that would be hard. Durability just isn't as good as it was but things are more comfortable! Good luck and just try to keep the animals and their nails off of it.

C. - I used to work at a furniture store, recently, and I would recommend you read the fine print on the warranty before you buy. They usually do not cover damage due to pets. The stain coverage is great, and they usually will replace it if the damage coincides with their policies. They will send someone out to inspect it and if they see cat claws have ripped it, you may not be able to do anything. Another type of warranty out there, once they replace the piece that is damaged, your warranty is null and void. Even if they replace it with new, you cannot purchase a new warranty on that piece. If you have a cushion replaced, the warranty is good on the sofa still, but not on that cushion. Microfiber itself is of decent quality, I have had mine for 2 years and its durable and once sprayed, easy to clean. For stains, follow the directions from the warranty. Some will say, just blot with a dry or damp cloth. If the stain doesn't come out, they will send you a cleaner. If you do anything other than what the warranty states, they will not help you. You must always know what they stain is, even if you don't, say something. Never say I don't know, they won't help you. I hope this information helps you. K. H.

I had a furniture set that fell apart after just 2 yrs. I contacted the department store and the furniture was evaluated and found defective, I took the bottom cover off and found how cheap the furniture was and then made my decision to do a very close evaluation on my next set. American made, stapled with no glue and chip board.

Furniture was replaced, (at no cost) with Natuzzi, which is foreign made, but has better quality materials and now the furniture feels more firm than ever.

Make the store who sold the furniture come visit and make some type of resolution, doesn't hurt to try!!

I have a microsuede couch and loveseat with a 2 year old, 9 year old and a 85 lb dog. They clean up great. I use a wet cloth with a little dawn and everything comes out. I also got a lifetime fabric warranty for an extra $67 at "Weekends Only" and haven't had to use it yet. I would say go for it! Also, i take a lint roller to it, and the dog hair comes off easily.

We have a microsuede couch that we purchased 2 year ago, and did not have it scotch guarded. We have 2 young children a 7 year old and a 2 month old and a dog. Our dog is allowed on the couch only with a blanket, so he's not an issue. Our two children have spit up on it and spilled everything under the sun on it, and as long as I wipe it up with a wet paper towel no stain is ever left on it. I love our couch, but I would reccommend the scotch guard, because had I thought about it I would have done it. Then I probably wouldn't be so uptight about any thing getting spilled on it.

Dear C.,
Unless you really like cleaning pet hair off your furniture, microsuede is not a good idea. Especially if your cats are long hair variety. Even short haired cats shed a lot. And even if the dog isn't allowed on the furniture hair still manages to make it there. I would suggest investing in real leather or look to a different manufacturer for Durahide or a similar product, but research it out before buying. Good luck. I was lucky and have a leather living room set and it is wonderful. I have a Siberan Huskey, long haired cat, parakeet and just recently acquired a rabbit for my grandson who lives with me. It is easy to keep clean. Just wipe with a damp cloth. Good luck. J. B

We have a microsuede/microfiber couch and chaise that we bought from Ashley furniture for only $800 and we love them. We have 2 large dogs, 3 cats, and a now 10 month old and it has held up well. We have only had it for a year, but am very happy how easy it is to take care of. I just use a damp washcloth once a week and wipe any spots and they come right out. I was worried about tears with our dogs because they are allowed on the furniture, but we have not had a problem and we have a crazy jack russell-huskey mix who is basically a very large jack russell with a lot of energy. We also have the warranty, but have not used it yet, but it's good for 5 years and I figure I'll get my money's worth by then.

When ever we have gotten something on them we have always been able to take a wet wash cloth and clean them right up! They are amazing couches and came highly recommened to us when we were buying that they are the couches to have with children!

I love our microfiber sofa. Its probably the same material as microsuede. It feels like suede. Its so easy to clean. My kids have spilled so much stuff on it, and there are no stains. Its kind of hard to get pet hairs out of, but I just vaccume it with a brush. Our cat has clawed it, and theres nothing we can do about that, except get a new scratching pad for the cat. :)
Overall its a great material for a house with kids.

They do last a while I had mine for two years and the couch was a hand me down, the chair I bought brand new and love it......I have a 6 and 3 year old and two large dogs and mine held up very well but unless you make sure that you get the stain soon after the spill or whatever it can still stain.....But if you have a home shampooer like a Bissell that takes stains out very well from the microfiber......GOOD LUCK and my couch was a tan color and the chair is a real dark maroon.

We fell into the same trap when we purchased our couch a few years ago. I thought it was going to be great-wrong! The durability isn't the problem it is the staining. If anything gets on it, there is no way to clean it (that I've found) without it leaving a water mark. We even use the kit it came with. As far as animals, we have a dog and cat and the cat climbs on it and her claws have even scratched it (not intentional) and it didn't leave a mark so that is a plus I guess! Maybe they've changed in the last few years but the scotchguard hasn't worked for us. We have also tried to find cleaning companies to come clean it and haven't found one yet that has the right service. It can't be steam cleaned like most cleaning services offer.

My husband and I had to get new furniture and we went to Nebraska Furniture Mart since they had sales. We got micro-fiber furniture for about $500 a piece for a couch and loveseat. The extra money for the scotch gaurd and warranty is totally worth it. Our daughter (10 mo) rubbed her snotty nose all over it and I too a damn rag to it and it diappears (once it dries). I've even gotten pen marks and blood (nephew's skinned knee) out!! Definately worth our money so far.

We have a microfiber couch and did have it treated with scotch guard. We have had it for about four years, and it is holding up to two kids, a dog and a cat just fine! The only problem that we ran into was that we waited until we had a few stains to call and have them clean it, and when they came they wouldn't clean the older ones because you are supposed to call within a certain amount of hours. So either don't wait until you have a few, or tell them they all happened the day before!

We have these type of couches. We did have them apply the Scotch Guard and were offered the same warranty that you are describing. We have two boys, ages 8 and almost 6, so it was a must. We have had these couches going on three years and have had no problems with them at all. I think that the Scotch Guarding was the best thing we could have ever done. The boys have even gotten sharpie marker (just a little bit) on the couch and I was able to get it off. I'm sure others have better knowledge of what to use to get stuff out of this material, but all I have ever used is oxyclean and water. Usually once every couple of months I will make a big bowl of it and dip a hand towel, wring it out and wipe the couches down. This takes off all the greasy hand prints, etc.

Good luck!

Hi C.,

We own a microfiber couch, Flexsteel, and it has barely lasted 2 years. The material is tearing apart at the seams...on every cushion. It almost looks as if it is shredding. It is just my husband and I that sit on it -- we do not allow or dog on the couch. We are currently dealing with trying to find a place to try and get the material repaired because the furniture store we purchased it from is no longer in business (shut the doors after 30 years). My husband and I have already said...we will never get microfiber again. I hope this helps.

ask them for how long the spray will last and how long the rip deal lasts. I had a couch one time with a matching recliner. The material on the recliner started to shred on the arm and since it was over a year they would not replace the material or the recliner. And the spray had to be reapplied every year at eighty dollars for the couch and thirty-five for the recliner and that was twelve years ago.

I bought a microsuede couch and recliner a year ago b/c the salesman said that any spills would come right up w/ just a damp cloth. I thought that would be great b/c I have a baby that spit up all of the time. However, since then I now have stains on my couch from spit up and water marks on it from trying to clean it up w/ a damp cloth. Therefore, the decision is yours but I will never buy another piece of microsuede furniture.

I LOVE our microsuede sets! Go ahead and take the warranty for tears, but especially if the set is red, there is little the company can do about stains. Usually they will replace the cushion rather than remove the stain. This works unless the set has been discontinued, then you may have to choose a whole new couch. We have two microsuade sets. We've had one for two years now, and it's in great shape. We bought another set a few years used, and it's also still looking good. One problem I've noticed is static. Whenever I sit on the couch, I shock EVERYTHING! My last piece of advice is if it's red, don't let it touch the wall. The couch will make a line on your wall like you wouldn't believe! I hope this helps. Good luck!

We bought a new set almost 1 year ago. We went to 4 different furniture stores and asked them what we should purchase. We told them that we have dogs, a kid, live on a farm, and need something easy to clean and durable. They ALL recommended leather. Not the fake stuff, real leather. We got a beautiful saddle brown set from Nebraska Furniture Mart for less than $2000. It has held up very well, and I'll never own anything other than leather again! My parents have a microsuede set, they paid WAY more than we did, and it looks great. BUT, they don't have indoor pets, and only have a grandchild that visits, doesn't live with them 24/7. I can't say anything about how a microsuede/microfiber will wear, but I can say that if you have carpeting or any type of a rug in your house, you may want to reconsider. The microsuede/microfiber creates LOTS of static. My niece had to buy a humidifier to cut down on the static. We chose leather instead. When we were looking, we took our 2 young children with us at the time and when we saw how much fun they were having dragging their feet across the showroom floor and then zapping each other, we decided to go with another option.

Hope this helps.

I have three microsuede/microfiber couches. I love them! They are in great shape. I have two kids, two cats and a dog. You do have to stay on top of the stains though. If you clean the stain up fairly quickly, then it is removed easily. None of them are "falling apart". Two down sides: microfiber cusions usually only have 1 fabric side on the cusions which means you can't just flip them over when you get a stain on them. The other down side is that my cats sit on top of the couches. They have kinda "flattened" the poofiness on the top of the couch. But other than that, I love the couches.

A friend who worked at a furniture store bought the microfiber couch and had it scotch guarded and it looked real bad after a few years. In my experience I would say, spend some money on a pretty slipcover that can last until your baby grows, it is not worth it if you are going to be suffering with your new furniture while having a baby.
I have leather with pretty good result (real ivory leather) simil lasted for about 6 years for us. Cloth never did in good shape, it either discolour, stain or just looks old.
A slipcover for whatever you like should work.
Hope it helps,

Hello C. A., I have a set and purchased it from Nebraska Furn. Mart who sold me the same warranty. I feel like it was worth it! While I do not have pets now, I had a cat when I originally purchased it a year ago and I had no problems. I had the set spot cleaned after I moved it and it cleaned right up, and the guy who cleaned it said he's always happy to see microfiber because it always cleans no matter what. I do have to be honest we don't sit in the area the furniture is in a lot so I can not speak for high traffic areas. My set looks just like it did when we purchased it so I love it. To clarify we do sit on it just not everyday all day. Hope this helps at least some! Good Luck!

We have a microfiber couch/chair/love seat that we've had now for over 2 years and it absolutely looks like new. We also sprung to have it stainguarded, and pretty much anything that gets on it (ballpoint ink, blood, food) comes right off with a little water and elbow grease! It was totally worth the investment. We also have 3 cats, and we have to make sure and keep their claws short, otherwise they can leave scratches if they are playing very h*** o* the furniture. However, for the most part they just lay on the furniture and leave their hair on it, but even that comes right off. Hope that helps! Good luck with your decision! :o)

I don't know too much about the fabric, but I do know that the protection they put on at the factory, even though a little expensive, is not the same as the spray on Scotchguard you can buy yourself. We had a fabric sofa for YEARS with 3 boys and a dog and any spill literally rolled off. It is well worth the money. I think any poorly made sofa will fall apart. Look for quality construction and fabrics and invest in the protection.

My first couch I ever bought new was microsuede and the one thing I remember is they salesguy taking out a ball point pen and making a big mark on it in the showroom and then washing it off. Needless to say I bought it after that. But with that being said, really you get what you pay for. If you expect a $1200 furniture suit to last more then about 3 or 4 years with the normal wear and tear of a family, the reality is is proabably isn't going to happen. If that is all you can afford at this time, then go ahead and get the scotchgaurd ect, but that miricle microsuede I bought only lasted about 4 years with no pets or kids! (that was premarriage)

We have two microsuede couches and have had good success with both. One we have had for about 6 years now and have had two kids since then. It has survived formula, chocolate milk, juice, etc. and has been very easy to clean (just soap and water, or even just water sometimes). We also bought the maintenance and Scotchguard package and had them come over a few times to help major issues(cat vomit on the couch-gross!) Each time they came they were very nice and got all the stains out. I would recommend it for little ones and pets...so far, so good!

I have 4 durapella microsuede couches from Asley furniture and I love them. Everything that gets spilled on them washes right off and cat hair also comes right off with a wet rag. I have had these for about 4 years and they look brand new. I have a mocha color upstairs and red downstairs. Also I did not get the scotch guard and they are still easy to clean and look great. I have three kids so I will never buy another type of fabric as welll as these ahve held up... hope that helps. J.

we have had ours for about 5 years now and it still looks new. I have 2 children 4 and 1 and between the 2 of them i think EVERYTHING has been on the couch. to be honest when you get them they give you a spray and if the furniture gets a stain on it you are supposed to use this spray and if the stain doesnt come out with that then they clean it, I have NEVER had to have them come clean it. its AWESOME. we did also have a dog but she wasnt allowed on the couches!! IT would be a great investment!!!!

We bought a microsuade couch and chair two years ago- it hasnt really been tested from the durability end (our son is only 18 months and just getting rough) however, when it was delivered the men got oil on it from the truck and it literally just wiped off. My nephew has also bled profusely on it and the blood just wiped off- this is without the scotch guard coating. You wont have to worry about stains and we have benn very happy with ours

We previously had leather and the dye faded and looked terrible. NFM replaced it and the same thing happened again. This was real leather and not a cheap set either! After the second time around we went to the store and used our credit towards a micro fiber set. We even had money left over since the leather was more expensive than the new stuff. We love it. With a dog and two kids and all of their friends it has been great. We even got black non-washable marker stains out!

My experience with microfiber furniture is that it's not very durable fabric. The fabric gets worn and rips easily. I'm sure the scotch guard is great for repelling stains, but if I were you, I'd spend the money on a heavier fabric upholstery. On the other hand though, maybe if it is a more expensive set, it may be better quality.

Hope this helps!

Children and pets are terribly h*** o* furniture. I would pick a material that is very sturdy. Scotch guard is good, especially for spills. My son's are 14 and 8 and have split the material on the back of my couch by jumping on it. They aren't supposed to do that, but they did. You could always put a cover over the couch to protect it. Covers can be washed.

Hi C.,
We bought a Microsuede couch right before my daughter was born 4 years ago. We also have cats. We bought it from Bassett and they applied the "stain guard". It is terrible now. Nothing comes out of it and pet stains are not included in the stain guard warrently. I personally would advise against buying one of these. They are expensive and beautiful but not for houses that are actually "lived in"....Ha!
Good luck.

My mom owns an upholstery shop in Smithville, MO about 10 mins north of Kansas City on 169 Hwy. She carries some very good microsuede fabrics that are scotch guarded to resist stains, oder, bacteria and are durable. If the frame is solid on both pieces you could get them re-upholstered. If you would like to contact her the name and number are.

We bought a microsuede couch 3 yrs ago. The co. did scotchgaurd it and let me tell you, I love it! We have an 18 month old and little bits of milk here and sticky fingers there are gone with a wipe of plain water on a white washcloth. I also got ink on it once and the water/washcloth worked perfectly. By the way, this is a light brown color too. Looks like brand new. I can't recommend it more. Maybe others have had problems, but we have not and I would say go for it!

we have this material for our couches. We love it. We did get the scotch guarding done and all you have to do to clean it is use a spray bottle with distilled water in it. Spray on stain and put a clean cloth on it to soak up the water and stain or you can just wipe it with a damp cloth but you don't want to wipe or scrub it too hard or you will take off the scotch guard. We got ink out, chocolate, and other stains. We have had these for almost 4 years. I do have towels on them over the back where your head goes because I didn't want to be cleaning them all the time from body oils. Our couch color is a very light beige and needs to be wiped often as I have 3 kids ages 15, 13, 8, and a cat with declawed front paws. I just clean it as I see stains on it and so far they come right off.
We bought it from Nebraska Furniture Mart with the scotch guard and warranty and not having any problems so far.

I have had a microsuede sofa and chair for 5 years and I love them. I have three boys so they are always getting stuff on it. I didn't have it scotch guarded by the dealer. So far nothing has stained it. Even ink and grease have come out, but I would clean up spots as soon as you notice them. Helpful hint. Baby wipes work GREAT. I was even able to remove Red M&M dye. I did scotch guard the furnature myself last week. I have a toddler and didn't want to press my luck. Also I know you are suppose to but when the cushions get especially dirty I have thrown the covers in the washer on gentle with Woolite and in the dryer on no heat. The come out like new. I hope this helps.

We recently purchased a microsuede couch from Ashley furniture for $600. We have 3 boys, 2 cats and a very furry Golden Retriever. So, far so good with the couch. Ashley Furniture offered a 5 year warranty for around $100 which we bought. If the couch tears, gets a hole, stained or whatever, they'll fix it or replace it for free. You can't beat that! I can guarentee my children can destroy a couch in less than 5 years:)) If they don't, the couch is amazingly well-built.

We bought one cause everyone saids great for kids. NO NO NO. We even pay the extra for stain guard. It's very hard to keep clean. Say we have had for 3 years and it looks like it's 10 years old. My brother has one and has the same problems. Our seat cushion is removable and it's the only thing we can keep look nice. We just through them in the washing machine. The micro suede is o'kay if no kids or pets. Unless you want to be cleaning all all the time.

Hi C.. We have a micosuede sectional and we love it. We did have it scotch guarded. My son peed on it and it came right up. As for the pets, it will attract hair and lint. Use a lint brush and the hair will come right off. A friend of mine had one of her kids use a marker on her couch and she got it off. Good luck!

I have had a microfiber couch for about 5 years now, and it holds up fine. I was very impressed when I first got it when my then 2 year old niece drew all over it with ballpoint pen, and without trying to clean it, it wore off on it's own! It is a struggle to clean - ours (and probably most if not all) is an 'S' fabric which means it can only be cleaned with a solvent cleaner, nothing which contains water or you will get water spots. Sometimes, cleaning with something wet is the only option, and I have read that using rubbing alcohol on the water spots will remove them - but you may have to do it more than once.
Overall, I really like the microfiber - and it has held up great - even with our 2 year old.

I love ours but ended up when we moved putting covers over both the couch and over stuffed chair. The kid have them looking a mess and we had the scotch guard on it and just with the mess the kids make not sure I would spend the money on it until they were old if I had to do it again. Though they do look nice with the slip covers on them and they still are very comfy :)

I've never had a problem with microsuede. In fact, we had two large Weimaraner/Lab mix dogs and two new lazy boy recliners made with microsuede. It is amazing how well they did - they were chewers and had problems being housebroken. But I would give the material two thumbs up - but would also recommend getting the scotch guard, that's what we had! :D Hope this helps you.
