My daughter seems to get sick every week, I am going back and forth on if we want to take her out of her daycare (she loves it) but she is always sick. Does anyone know of something we can do to help her? She is only 11 1/2 months old. The pediatrician she goes to says there isn't anything that will help and that some kids are just sick more often than others. Please help

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone for all their advice and suggestions. I did find a company that offers a far superior antioxidant product. Since my daughter has been on the Xocai active she has not been sick once. It has greatly boosted her immune system, she loves it (it's healthy chocolate), and her allergies to the animals have completely disapeared. If you would like any information about this you can visit my website under Health By Chocolate in the health and nutrition listing of mom owned businesses.

Thank you everyone!

I so understand where you are at. I had similiar questions about my daughter. But we found Juice plus and Arbonne's hybrids for kids. THey are both amazing and my daughter is so healthy. We luckily do not make regular visits to the doctor.
I have two wonderful people that can help you with either supplements and if you want more info on either product I can show you the direction to go in to look.
Best of luck,

I use of Vit C, echinacea, elderberry extract, zinc, grapefruit seed extract, garlic and oregano oil. Now you are likley to only get vit c, echincea and elderberry syrup (Sambuncol) into a 1yo. I cook a lot with garlic. Limit juices (sugar depresses the immune system) and drink a lot of water. Juice Plus as mentioned below is a good product too.

My mother in law is in to health foods, etc. and she was at Montanita Coop in the north valley one day and asked them what they recommend for an infants immune system. They told her that Children's Acidopholous works wonders (which you can buy at Wild Oats as well). I started giving to my daughter when she was around 1; half a teaspoon of the powder mixed in her milk, water, etc. once a day. She's been very, very healthy since. She attends daycare everyday, she's 2 years and 3 mo. now and the worst we've seen is a little runny nose and a little cough that doesn't last very long. I swear by the stuff! Good luck.

Hi:

In addition to the advice you have already received, please spend the time to visit NAET.com, order and read the book "Say Good-Bye to Children's Allergies." IMMUNE BOOSTING INGREDIENTS

1. Acidophilus (or mixed probiotics), the kind that require refrigeration

2. Echinacea with Graperoot tincture

3. Garlic

4. Vitamin C with Bioflavinoids, can be purchased together or separate

5. Propolis, a.k.a. bee pollen

6. Grapefruit seed extract, preferably with OJ because it is bitter by itself!

As far as dosages/amounts to give your child, please consult a doctor or herbalist.

When my kids have a fever, I let them "burn off the bug" and only give them Tylenol if they get very uncomfortable, need to sleep, or the fever runs abnormally high for their age bracket. This is another great way to keep your child's immune system healthy. Do not always suppress their natural defense mechanisms.

Hi B.~

So sorry to hear about your little one. A little over a year ago, my boys were always sick! They would get the flu at least once a month and the colds and running noses were non stop!
I tried several supplements on the market but then a friend of mine introduced me to the Pharmanex line. They have supplements and a fantastic drink called G3.

G3 is a nutrient-rich juice from the prized gac "superfruit" of southern Asia, whose nutritional benefits have been scientifically demonstrated to protect cells. Among gac's potent phytonutrients are a unique and highly-bioavailable form of carotenoids called "lipocarotenes™" that provide powerful antioxidant protection while supporting healthy immune function. The G3 formula was developed with 3 additional superfruits-Chinese lycium, Siberian pineapple, and cili fruit-that synergistically provide exponential benefits. G3 has a great taste (my family loves it) that is deliciously sweet, slightly tart and can be enjoyed daily by everyone.

Phamanex also has this BioPhotonic Scanner that really shows your antioxidant levels.. I had my entire family scanned before starting with the G3 and children's supplements called Jungamals. My boys were really low but now that they are on the G3 and vitamins, their antioxidant levels have tripled and they've been flu and cold free! Of course they still get the coughs but they don't last as long. Dr offices are now using the scanner to help promote eating healthy.. I think a lot of people will understand the importance once they see a visual of how low their score can be when they don't eat the right foods.

I feed my daughter a mixture of kale and avocado just about every day, and she has only had a couple of mild colds in her life. She is four now and has been eating kale and avocado since she was one. I buy a couple batches of organic kale, wash it, take out the tough stems, then steam it in a big soup pot (1/2 inch water at the bottom should do it). Transfer to a food processor, cool, then spoon into ice cube trays to freeze. I give my daughter 2-3 cubes of kale per serving mashed up with 1/4 avocado. Heat the kale before adding the avocado. She still complains about eating it (other times telling my how it is so good), but knows that it feeds her body's "soldiers" to keep her strong and healthy. I really think the addition of dark leafy greens to her diet keeps her healthy. If we run out of avocado we mix the kale with cream cheese.

Hi B.,

I read through most of the information and, in my opinion, some things were left out. If you have your daughter in daycare, make sure they are using only "green" products to clean with, such as Sol-U-Guard from Melaleuca, Inc. (www.melaleuca.com). This is EPA approved for use in daycare and it kills germs without chemicals.

Be careful of the antibacterial hand gels. Just google this and there is much research about the fact that the synthetic ingredient in it is not working any longer. The germs are becoming resistant. They basically may not be doing anything to kill the germs in your daycare. Research is showing that tea tree oil, or Melalueca oil, is much better at killing germs, even MRSA (which they are studing now in other countries).

You could talk to your daycare about getting a membership with Melaleuca to get much better, less expensive products. You could also get them for use in your own home. Just google toxic chemicals and the research into the effects on children is amazing and disturbing.

If you would like more information on Melaleuca and trying the products out (they give all new customers $100 in free products over the first 5 months of shopping), just let me know.

Good luck. My kids are hardly ever sick since I switched to Melaleuca's products. My oldest son is even immune deficient.

I know you have received many responses regarding nutrition and supplements etc. I agree with those who say to watch what your child is eating, rule out allergies and sensitivities to foods and animals. Probiotics are essential etc. There is something else you can do.

I don't know where you live, but go onto a website called www.upledger.com Look under the heading of "finding a practitioner" search your area and look for someone who does LDT or Lymph Drainage Therapy. The more training they have, the better. If someone also has a lot of experience with CST, CranioSacral Therapy, all the better. These two systems work in concert of affect the immune response and is wonderful for kids. It's very gentle and non-invasive and kids love it. If you have specific questions or would like more info, I'd be happy to talk to you about it. I would even help you find a practitioner in your area. My number is ###-###-####. Please let me know if I can help. My kids are older now, but I work with kids a lot to help their natural systems become stronger.

The way to boost a child's immune system is by eating fruits and vegetables which carry the antioxidants and phytonutrients that humans need. It is hard to get a 1 year old to eat as many of these as she needs. There is a whole food supplement that is proven to work extremely well for this problem. It is called Juice Plus. It is 17 fruits, vegetables and grains, dehydrated and put in a chewable, capsule or gummie form. Your daughter would be able to eat the chewables at one year old. You might want to break them up into smaller pieces for easier eating, or crush them and mix them in her baby food. My 18 month old grandson loves them, and has been eating them since he was 10 months old. Juice Plus will raise Jordan's antioxidant level within a month. Staying on it will continue to increase her health and balance her immune system. Some Pediatricians are so focused on illness and treatment, that they do not have the best information for prevention of illness. Prevention is the way to go and Juice Plus is the most throughly researched whole food supplement in the world. There are 12 research studies on Juice Plus, done by major universities and medical facilities and published in major medical and nutritional journals. Many more research studies are on the way. Check out www.madjuicer.com to find out about Juice Plus and the research. You'll be glad you did. It will help your child.

Hi B.. I know just how you feel, my daughter seems to be sick all the time too. What I have started giving her was these yogurt drinks made by Danon that are called Immunity which you can get pretty much at any grocery store. I also have started buying a new multi-vitamin for her called Manna Bears, you can only buy them online or through a local distributor but they were recommended to me by a friend and I have noticed a big change in my daughter since I started giving them to her. They look like gummy bears and they are made of all natural ingredients. You can find them online or if you want to email me back I can give you the name of my friend that sells them, she lives in Westminster. Also, I talked to the pharmacist about giving my daughter a Vitamin C supplement and he recommended Emergen C which is a packet of orange powder that you mix with 6 oz of water. I give her 3 oz per day in her juice which is 500 mg of Vitamin C. Now I started this when my daughter was about 2 1/2 so since your daughter is younger you might want to check with your pharmacist to make sure the doing the same thing is alright.

With all of the extra vitamins that she is getting I have noticed that she doesnt get sick near as often. Good luck to you and your daughter.

Cut out any foods that contain cane sugar (sugar). This is hard because so many things contain this horrible product. Read lables. Too much salt also can weaken the immune system. This cuts out any convenience and snack foods. In other words eat healthy fresh foods. Plenty of vegetables and fruits.
Things that suppport the immune system are vit. C, Zinc, Cinnamon, Ginger, Garlic, elderberry. You can find immune boosting mixtures at health food stores or herb stores.
I find that doctors just have to keep their mouths shut about things that don't include medicating paople.

You don't mention specifics of your daughter's ailments, but the fact that you have many pets concerns me a bit.

I have always been a dog owner, right now just have one, but in the past, have had as many as five at one time.

If your child suffers from strep throat infection more than two or three times per year, I strongly suggest having your pets (dogs or cats) checked by a vet for the presence of strep thoat infection. This infection is one of the few ailments that can be passed back and forth between pets and humans.

The bad news is, dogs and cats with strep rarely exhibit symptoms, and most times none at all!

If this does not apply to your situation, I would also like to mention an important fact that I learned years ago when my daughter was prone to ear infections as a toddler.

Once, my daughter had an ear infection, but needed a second 10-day round of antibiotics to cure it. She was a sound sleeper, and slept a minimum of 12 hours at night. The doctor explained that when treating with antibiotics, it was critical to stick to the dosage schedule to obtain best results for a cure. In other words, if the instructions call for a dosage every six hours, you must wake a sleeping child if necessary.

Check with your pediatrician to see if he/she has any suggestions regarding dietary changes that might boost immunity system.

Hope this info helps. Good luck!

B., first I would ask the day care if they sanitize everything in site after they close. If they don't, I would ask them to start. Tell them why you are asking, and then tell them it's for saftey reasons, also. I'm pretty sure they are sanitizing on a regular basis. With your daughter, I would pack a hand sanitizer bottle in her diaper bag. Let the daycare know you would like for them to sanitize her hands every hour or two. This way you know she is clean. A lot of daycares will do that. Make sure when you pick her up, you are using the hand sanitizer on your self, in front of them, and then use it on her. It may seem like a hassle, but it's well worth it. My old babysitter of 9 years, did that for me. Especially during the Flu season (September to May). My doctor is the one that told me to do this, and my four kids are not sick as much. I hope this will help.

There are lots of things you can do to help boost your babe's immune system. Children's immune systems might be all different, but there are always ways to improve them.

First off is diet, I am sure that your daughter has a pretty good diet. But, refined sugars have been scientifically proven to cause a decrease in the immune system (look for hidden additives in healthy foods like cereals, crackers, etc). 70% of a person's immune system is in the intestines (who knew?). Probiotics (the live microflora found in fermented foods like yogart) are are fantastic boost to your immune sytem because they help your body eliminate harmful bacteria and also help your "good" microflora flourish. Infant probiotics are great, good brands are HLC neonate (Pharmaca), Solaray Babylife (Vitamin Cottage) and Natren Life Start (available at Wild Oats on Academy).

Lastly, I would highly recomend classes by Mary Lou Singleton, midwife and herbalist who teaches at Body, Mind, & Spirit. She has one class called Pediatric Herbalism that covers diet and preventive practices. Here is their website:

Hi B.,
Speaking as a Nutritionist, I think there are alot of things to consider. There is the possibility of an allergy to certain foods, and the reactions needn't be severe or obvious. There are many foods that have a conjesting affect on the individual, and simply eliminating them can make an enormous impact. Providing her with nutrient dense foods, high in bioflavanoids and antioxidants will help to boost her immune system. Consider making your own organic baby foods, rather than commercial. Additives and preservatives have a deleterious effect on such a small child with a less than mature immune system. I cannot emphasize the importance of encouraging fluids, especially filtered water to flush out toxins. One other point I'd like to make is that when cleaning your home, don't replace germs with chemicals. Look for alternative ways to keep your home safe, clean, and healthy.Imagine if your daughter was considered chronically healthy instead of chronically ill? Best of luck and health to you.

Hi B.,
It sounds like you received a lot of great advice. I know it is difficult having a child sick all the time. I am a mom of 4 beautiful kids. I also would like to recommend Juice Plus. Our family has been on it for 5 years and it has changed our lives. We are hardly ever sick and only go to the MD for well visits. If and when we do get sick their immune systems are so strong that they are able to fight it off quickly. I used to be the type that got a cold and it lasted for 14 days. Now when I am sick it is only for 2 -3 days. Because this is whole food nutrition, we are eating better and feeling great. Your body craves what you give it so naturally my kids love fruits and vegetables. I am sure you already know that fruits and vegetables increase your immune system. Another thing I learned that has helped us is how bad sugar is to your immune system. That has been one of the hardest things for us to cut out. We are not perfect and are still taking baby steps to improve our health. I hope this helps and if you have any questions about Juice Plus just give me a call. 1-866-837-5587 (toll free)

The goldenrod helps with runny noses of all kinds and the scarlet globe mallow is an overall immunity booster. Hi B.,
I apologize for not getting back to you till now. I wish I could have gotten to you earlier. Speaking for myself an the many kids we work with on a regular basis, I have made changes in my diet that have really been life altering, to the point where I now coach others on how to make these changes in their own lives. I have been cold, flu and allergy free for the past three years and I was the kind of person that got the flu or a cold because someone living two blocks away from me is a little under the weather. I also had horrible pet allergies but refused to get rid of my pets, so I just suffered through it. Yes it is true that some people are sick more than others, but it is usually the result of their consistent life style choices, i.e. living, eating, thinking and/or environment...which are aspects that most in the medical community do not recognize.
I would like to share all of this with you in an email but think it would be much faster and easier if we could speak by phone. It would just be a lot to write.
I am also pregnant with my first baby and glad to say that I do not have to be concerned about the flu season, there is nothing for me to "catch" because I am healthy. My midwife says that I am one of the healthiest pregnant women that she has ever worked with. I believe that is all due to my diet and lifestyle.
All the best to you and your family, and may it be free of runny noses :)

Hello!

If you mean sick as in an almost continuous cold, my daughter had the same thing and eventually built up enough immunity. If her pediatrician is not concerned, it is probably okay, but you could call for a second opinion?
The thing is that she will get sick and will get better as she builds up immunity. For us, I thought that it would be better for her body to learn all this now, rather than when she will be in school and miss lessons.
To me this also covers stomach bugs and eye infections and while they are no fun, what day care can offer my daughter in fun, learning and social behavior outweighs the occasional illness. She is now two and honestly the worst part was around the 1-year mark. After that it got slowly better.
Last winter her main day care teacher asked all the parents to wash the kids hands when they first arrived and I think this might have helped cut down on colds etc. as well. Maybe this is something your day care can also do? It is so easy and a good habit to get into anyway.

Hope this helps!
D.

Hi, I don’t know if this is your child’s problem But when I was a kid I was always sick- it wasn’t until I was 6 or so that they discovered I had severe allergies and the constant nose drainage into my chest caused me to have coughs in addition to being constantly run down which creating additional illnesses. After I was finally diagnosed, it was discovered that our family dog needed a new home and we had to eliminate carpet in my bedroom to help control the dust. I was also given allergy medicine. My children who are 2 and 3 years are suffering from many of my same ailments. I have put air filters in their rooms and keep pets to fish only. I also try to keep yeast and additives in their diet to a minimum. If you haven’t talked to your pediatrician about the possibilities of allergies it may be worth a conversation. Good luck as I know how having sick children is difficult.

It seems that typically the first year or two that a child is around other children, whether it's daycare, preschool or school, they get sick more often. It's because they are being exposed to more germs then ever before. There isn't really much you can do. If they aren't exposed in daycare, then they will be in preschool or school. Make sure she has a healthy diet and give her a vitamin that is age appropriate. I would check with your doctor before giving her ANY over the counter product. Most things are tested and marketed for adults, not children. Remember...children are not littel adults, their bodies are not the same. They are still developing and you don't want to give them something that could harm them.
I know it is frustrating that she keeps getting sick, but it does get better and she will probable build a stronger immune system as she gets older.

Hi B.-
I wanted to respond to you about the immune system. I have 3 kids: 11, 9 and 6. When they were younger we went around and around with AMA drs. and the immune system, which is NOT their specialty. I have two ideas that come to mind concerning your daughter. My first thought is that she may be "sensitive" to all of your animals. She may or may not have allergies to them, but if she does have any kind of sensitivities to food, having animals in your home will exacerbate her systems, which can mimic cold symptoms. My other thought is that children do get sick and build their immune system that way, but every week is not okay. We can't shield our kids from all germs and a healthy immune system will fight the germs, such as in the daycare, unless it's unreasonably filthy. As far as building the immune system: Yogurt (I believe 12 mo. is okay for milk products) The live cultures in yogurt fight the "bad buggies" (bacteria) that come into our system and when living there in our GI tract, maintain a healthy immune system. You can also get powdered to mix in with her food or chewable if she does not like yogurt. I would also encourage lots of veggies and fruits. (organic if you can) Hope this helps!---E. T.

I have 2 kids. My oldest daughter (7) was sick a lot as a toddler. She went to an inhome daycare where there were only 2 other kids. We put a humidifier in her room and that helped a lot!

Now, with my younger daughter, we put a humidifier in her room from the very beginning and she's had 1 cold - she'll be 2 in about 2 weeks.

Airconditioning and heaters dry out the mucous membranes and they crack - that lets all those little germies in. So, (for us) the humidifier has been a MAJOR improvement over just nothing!

My daughter was the same way. From about 3 months old. We couldn't figure it out because she wasn't in daycare or any kind of play group and She has no siblings that bring home germs. The only exposure she really got was going to the grocery store with me and church on sunday. Finally when she was 2 1/2 she was hospitalized for an unknown illness. At that point I had enough. I started researching a lot of different things since her doctors weren't much help. We took her off milk, (However she does still eat cheese and yogurt) We got her on a probiotic and a multi vitamin. We wash her hands and our hands every chance we get. We also cut back on her sugar intake. There are a lot of other things you can do but these are just the small steps that made a huge difference for us. My daughter is now 3 1/2. Since making these changes a year ago she has only been sick 3 times the whole year. Which is amazing for someone who use to be sick every other week. I Hope this helps and good luck.

There isn't really anything you can do. My daughter was always sick when she was in daycare. It was so bad I brought her to an allergist thinking the weezing and runny nose had constently had to do with our apartment or something in her environment making her sick. We fed her all organic foods gave her vitamins kept her on formula for extra nutrients instead of just switching to milk and nothing worked. He allergy tests of course came back clean and guess what when we moved and she was out of daycare for three weeks she was clear. As soon as she went back to daycare it was back. Now she is home for a little over a year and she has been sick only once in that time and go figure we got it after visiting my husbands classroom. (he is a teacher) So I am sorry to say I got the same answer from my Drs. She will eventually build up some heavier immunities but for now you just have to deal with the sickness.

Hi,
It is so hard once kids are in daycare/school they are exposed to so many things that they otherwise wouldn't be. Your daughters immune systen is adjusting to the outside world at a young age. Is she still nursing? If she is there are things you can take that would pass through the milk to help her immune system. If you are not then you can wait until she is a full year and then put her n a really high grade supplement which will help some. Other than that eating healthy, limiting dairy and sugar will help. Acupuncture can help too, to strengthen her immune function.
I hope this helps,

I have also got a 3 year old who has the same issue with getting sick........she always has. Her doctor told me there isn't a whole lot i could do to help her out also. Her doctor did advise me to start giving her pediasure everyday as it has a lot of nutrients in it, and she has seemed quite a bit healthier this past year. I can't say it's totally helped, as she does still catch everything, but she hasn't been sick nearly as often as the last two years!! Hope it helps!!

Kids in preschool and daycare get viral illnesses. I had my son in Tutor Time for 3 weeks and even I got so sick. We had to pull him out. I stayed home anyway, but we thought he needed it socially. It was a waste of money because they didnt' interact with him. They said if he didn't show that he wanted to do it, they weren't going to force him. ANyway, I recommend Hyland's Homeopathic meds..Earache tablets not the eardrops for red ears, sneezes and sniffles for colds, allergies, etc.

Good Luck!

I read some of the responses, and too believe in JuicePlus! My family has been on it since my 2nd child was @2 months old. I was not on the program when I was pregnant, but now that I understand the benefits of raw fruits and vegetables, I wish I was. Our 2nd daughter was born with 2 holes in her heart (an ASD and a VSD). I nursed her until she was 4 months old, and once she got her first set of molars, I started giving her Juice Plus Gummies every day (our older daughter was taking them and loving them). To make a long story short, her ASD has completely closed, and the VSD is well on its way....without prescribed medicine or surgery. Our last cardiologist visit was great, and she does not have to return for one year! The rest of our family has been much healthier as well. My older daughter is not sick very often, and my husband is even a HUGE fan! I think he believes in it more than anyone! I recently signed up as a distributor....after over 1 year on the prgram. Check it out...www.juiceplus.com/+dw67845. JuicePlus has really chaged our life! It is worth a few minutes of your time.

There's a good possiblity that it's not just the daycare. In my own experience, it was a combination of "triggers" that added up. Dust, mold, and germs at school, plus animals at home. A slight cold turning into a nonstop illness. Growing up taking allergy shots, medications, and dealing with ashma, for what? To have animals? It wasn't until I moved out that all my symptoms literally disappeared. I plead with you to consider removing your pets.

If this seems too drastic, spend the money and have them tested by an allergist first. It's soooo much better to get rid of the source, instead of tying to treat the illness.

Hi B.,
I'm a stay at home mother of three and am looking to provide child care at my home so that I may continue to stay home with my girls. If you are interested, let me know. I live in North Loveland (just 15 min. from Ft. Collins.) I was reading your request regarding your child being sick a lot. Is she in a public day care system, or home day care? If she is around a lot of kids, that may very well be the reason why she is so sick all the time. My kids are very healthy and rarely sick. I have a 5 year old in Kindergarten, a 3 year old and a 20 month old. I've only had to keep my 5 year old home once this year due to the stomach flu that she got from me. Other than that, we've all been blessed with great health. Let me know if placing Jordan in a home based day care is something you would be interested in. Although I am not certified, I do know CPR and my home is child proof! Hope this info helps you...!
Take care!

My youngest is 3 so the gummies will work for her. Also, is the dosage for children noted on the bottle for the pill form?

Thanks,

How long has she been in daycare? If for a long time 6 months or more I may be concerned. If she just started I would give it at least 6 months to what happens. She is developing ammunity to all the bugs going around and hopefully once exposed will not get sick so often. I think whatever you do is you should follow your heart, having a sick baby is so hard and worrisome.

Hi Brittany,
Yes I do know of something that would likely build your daughters immune system. My 2 year old granddaughter was prone to catching colds. We started her on this product and she has not been sick for a year. In fact our whole family takes it so it is good for everyone (has helped my daughter's and son's asthma/allergies, lowered my cholestral). Pleae look at the following link http://teamcrown.net/stp/. It will provide you with some basic information about the product as well as the business if interested (the product cost the same whether a customer or business member). If you interested in learning more let me know let me know and I can get more information to you. I think when you watch the video you will see the reason this product should be included in everyone's diet is because it just makes sense. Check it out it might be for you and your family! K.
