I am looking to make a really nice Land Before time birthday cake for my youngest son's first birthday. I would really like for it to be 3D. Any help would be appreciated. I have thought about trying to find a way to do the great valley and then putting figurines of the dinosaurs in there, but I have NO IDEA how to go about doing that. Other ideas are appreciated as well. I don't really want to just do a dinosaur shaped birthday cake, though I am considering it IF it looks good enough. But I definitely don't just want to do a Dinosaur themed cake, I want it to actually be Land Before Time. I would really like for it to be 3D. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So what I have decided to do is to make a sheet cake and use grahm crackers as mountains around it. I will have a volcano topper off to one side with the big T-Rex on the other side of the mountains, to show that he cannot get into the Great Valley. I will decorate the cake to look like the great valley with the waterfall and river (fruit by the foot), nests and eggs (pretzels and whoppers), fun jurassic rocks (nerds), palm trees (pretzel sticks and melting candy wafers), and other leaves and such. Then I will place figurines of Little Foot, Cera, Chomper, Duckie, Petrie, and Spike on it. I am also going to make him a tiny personal cake that will just be a frosted cake with a picture of Little Foot newly hatched piped onto it. Thanks for all the suggestions!

That sounds like a great idea. This may work, my husband is actually the expert at making cakes. If you bake sheet cakes and then cut them into triangles, you could make a triangular prism (mountains) and stick them together with icing. I would definitely experiment before you made the cake for real.

Good luck!

The other day I saw a cake pan for a pull-apart dinosaur. It looks lie a dino but individual "cupcakes" pull apart. I think it was at Target or Hobby Lobby.

Check on the birthday express and other similar websites. many times you can find the cake pan for the characters, or maybe you can find one for mountains. Once you get this, if you need help with the cake there are always people you can find that do cakes themselves. My little girl is getting a tigger cake for her first party and the same woman that did my wedding cake is the one doing this for us. Very reasonable price, plus you get and awesome, home-made cake.

I can't really help you, but I feel your pain :) My daughter turns 4 MAy 24th and wants a My Little Pony cake. I found a website with great ideas from real Moms, here's the link to the dinos but you can search it yourself for other things if you want:

After looking at all of the pony cakes and realizing that I am SO not crafty enough to make anything like that, I ordered a MLP picture on Ebay that melts into the frosting. I will make her a regular rectangular cake and lay the picture on top, and viola, a pony cake. I just couldn't see myself spending 6 hours on a cake to be eaten right away the day after we get home from a 3 week vacation, which is when her party is. Good luck, anyway. Hope his cake is awesome. I remember watching the Land Before Time when I was a kid :)

Hi A.! My kids are now 10 and 12, but I've made more than my fair share of birthday cakes. (A word to the wise - once you start, your kids will expect it. Mine will not eat a store bought cake.) I would stick with the idea of inserting figures. You can always buy the set from the Wal-Mart bakery and add it to your own cake. Do you have any Pyrex bowls? You can bake smaller round cakes in them and stack them for the volcano on a rectangle sheet cake. Icing will make everything stick together. Use vibrant colors, add the figures, and Voila! Kids aren't as critical as we think. When I would ask my kids how they're cakes looked, they were always very impressed - which made me feel great. You could also make dinosaur-shaped sugar cookies to go with it. One year we found blow-up dinosaurs at the dollar store and used them for party favors. Good luck-L.

Publix makes really good cakes, they make a 3D cinderella's castle so I would think they could make the valley for you. You can buy the dinosaurs at Target in a pack of 10 or so to place throughout. Otherwise, call a specialty baker from the phone book...you may have already done that. Good luck

We are on the verge of making our 3rd dino cake for my soon to be 6 yr old. What I have done in the past is take a small toy mega phone and cover it with iceing and use that as your volcano. I then set that on a large rectangular cake and use the rest to set dinos and make grass and a river. At the outside party we then put a small firework (roman candle or something like that, that is my hubby's dept) in the volcano. We set it off and it looks like the volcano is erupting. After cutting a small hunk out around where the volcano was, we then eat the rest of the cake.

they have stadium shaped cake pans that could work like a valley. but think about the amount of work you would be putting in for a cake that a one year old won't recignize
