Lactose Intolerant? - Pittsburgh,PA

My 13 month old son was recently weened off of his formula and is now on whole milk. Ever since this time, he has had soft, non formed bowel movements (not necessarily diarrhea), usually once or twice a day. He doesn't appear to be in pain and rarely does he cry when he has a BM. When he was 3 weeks old (our decision, ped did not suggest we did this), we switched to soy formula due to him not being able to digest the regular formula (gassy, unable to burp, irritable after eating, crying, etc.). The soy formula alleviated this problem and he did well up until about 2 weeks ago. Has anyone had any experience with this? I am definately going to call the ped early this week, but I thought it may just be an "adjustment" to the real milk and that's why I gave it a little time. Thanks!

What can I do next?

One of my pediatricians Dr. Zeballos (Childrens Community Pediatrics- group) was saying that sometimes it is the "Milk Fat" that seems to give the kids the problems. If they have problems on whole (especially if they had a lot of gastrointestinal issues) try 2% then 1%. After that there is a brand called "Happy Milk". It is milk that has the active cultures of yogurt. My son- who couldnt tolerate whole, 2%, or 1%- has been on "Happy Milk" since the end of October and doing great. He also hasnt had any issues with diaper rash since he started drinking it. If "Happy Milk" doesnt work then you can always go with "Lactaid". If that doesnt work you should probably go to soy. I hope this helps. Good Luck.

Hi J.. I am a mommy of one. If I had a dollar for all the belly trouble I had with my son I would be loaded. LOL
YES I had problems even with Similac.
My son had to take Malox as an infant for gas and all that wonderful stuff you speak of.
My son has had it all his life. He is 3 now. I wish I had a competent doctor back then to help me with guidence. These kids come with NO instructions, ha ha. He drinks Rice Dream now, and still has bad bowel moments time to time. It's our way of life.
Don't feel alone. At the end of the day, if it's helping your child, do what feels right.

My now 11 yo DS was having the same trouble. By 4 yo he was still not fully potty trianed due to the frequent soft stools. His ped was unwilling to do a food allergy test till age 5 thinking he might out-grow whatever it was. Rather then wait we switched him to soy milk and other soy-substitutes for dairy prodocts and within days his stools were more formed and less frequent and he was able to complete his potty training. He still has difficulty with dairy products but we do allow them from time to time.

Can he eat other dairy products like cheese, yogurt, ice cream? My middle son could eat dairy, but had the same issues with milk that you described. We gave him Rice Dream, and Almond Dream to drink and his BMs were normal. He wasn't able to tolerate soy though. The Almond milk is very tasty!! He drank that for 2 yrs, then he switched to regular milk 6 months ago, and hasn't had any more reaction to it. I don't think its necessarily a lactose intolerance, but definitely something in the milk that upset his tummy. Maybe try the rice or almond milk and see how he does. It is usually found in the organic section at the GE. Good luck!

I too had my son on a lactose free formula and when the doctor said we can put him on regular milk, he said that we can use 2% milk. My son had no problem digesting the 2% and the doctor said that it's not always necessary to use whole milk. Hope that helps.

Hi J....I am a mother of a soon to be 3yo. The symptoms that your son is having sound ALOT like what I went through with my daughter! We are getting the Lactaid Whole Milk and she did really well from the beginning! I tried telling the Ped that was her problem BUT it took them FOREVER to agree with me. The Lactaid Whole Milk is more expensive...around $3.50/half gal but her comfort is well worth the cost. My daughters symptoms cleared up like magic within a few days!! Its worth a try!!
