We used karo syrup at first, then moved to prune juice, mixed with his formula. It was a bit of a juggling act. Soon you will be able to introduce foods that will help move him along! Try prunes, they are tasty and my son eats the entire container with good results :)

Hi,
Yes - I used Kyro with both my acid reflux kids. It worked great - you'll probably need to experiment a bit to see what works. I think I used to do about a tablespoon of light syrup once per day - in the morning bottle that I knew they'd be drinking the whole entire thing.
I didn't know about it at the time, but you might want to try Glycolax or Miralax powder instead (truthfully can't remember which one is the generic one - now available over the counter, so ask the pharmacist). It is a powder that dissolves completely and has absolutely no taste or side effects - again, experiment with maybe just a teaspoon at first. Good luck.

Hi M. -
We had the same issue with my son. When he was 1 month old, he started on Zantac and also on the Enfamil A/R (which was the added rice) and it was soooo hard for him to go to the bathroom.

At that time, we spoke to the pediatritian about it and she put him on Miralax (once a day). I cant remember the dosage, but it was definately not the adult dose, and I mixed it in with his morning bottle.

He was on Miralax every day for about 10 months. It kept him very regular. Once he was no longer on formula, we took him off of the Miralax and he was fine. We would use it if he started to get a little backed up, but that rarely happened.

I actually tried it as an adult and it is extremely mild, no cramping or any side affects at all.

Check with your doctor about it, but it was a lifesaver for us!!

Fish oils are essential for kids, especially if they're having trouble going to the bathroom. Find a good one without a fishy taste at your local Health Food store!

Hi M.,

The nurse at our pedi office recommended 1/2 ounce karo syrup, 1/2 ounce prune juice and 3 ounces of water. Worked like a charm every time. the nurse also recommended bicycling my daughters legs to get things "moving".

Good Luck!

HI...my son has the same problem. However, I would consult your Dr. before using anything. After speaking to our pediatrician, we are using 1 t. fish oil and 2 t. Miralax daily in juice. The fish oil helps loosen the bowel movement so it's easier to push out and the Miralax bulks up the bowel movement so he feels the urge to push at the right time. He has been regular ever since!

Karo Syrup is sugar from corn. I don't know why this would help but I do know that most authorities are telling people to get off the corn syrup sweeteners - the high fructose corn syrup in so many processed foods is a huge problem and a cause of the rampant obesity. Then there's the issue of tooth decay, and overall development of a taste for sugar. I know you have to be very concerned about honey in a young child - not sure if Karo is similar but I would think it would be.

I would think an excellent children's supplement in liquid form would make more sense - Reliv is the best out there. More fiber in a highly absorbable form, plus nutrition, DHA, omega 3s etc. - plus no warning labels and no side effects. It would probably help with the reflux. Everyone I know who's used it for that has had great results. You didn't say if you are interested in getting your child off the meds but you did say they are making things worse. I would go towards supporting the immune system rather than adding an unnecessary product to help counteract the effects of the meds. Giving the body good health might make a lot more sense and give you much better results as well as peace of mind, rather than treating symptoms. Just a thought.

I have been through the Karo syrup route...it didn't work for us at all. My daughter has had trouble going to the bathroom since birth. She is now 5 and we still go through bad spouts of not going. She's been to the childrens hosp and they help bu just overloading her on laxatives. She is on Myralax every day and sometimes still has problems. Talk with your pediatrician and stress how much/little your child is going. My daughter got so bad she wasn't eating or drinking and was throwing up. Make sure to stay on top of it. I'm a little concerned however about the suppositories you said you use. Every day? Is this reccommended by the pediatrician? Sometimes they can cause more harm than good.
good luck

If you are formula feeding a lot of formula has high iron in it and can lead to constipation and you said he's 5 months so if you started food baby cereal has a lot of iron too and the combo of the two could be causing some of his problems. If you intorduced food already introduce some peaches and pears they are good for this and stay away from apples and bananas and rice they naturally help make things more solid. I've heard of using kyro syrup but never had to with my boys but I would check with your ped for the amount they recomend giving because I've heard from people that a little goes along way and if its a side effect of the meds they may want to change what he is taking.

At Wholefoods they sell Udo's Choice infant probiotics. Every time my children have diarrhea, constipation, vomit, any stomache trouble, this is the BEST, this is good bacteria for your child's immune system (same stuff as in yogurt but in pure form). Good luck!

I had the same problem with all my kids the worst is my 11 month old. SHe was also on refux meds b/c when ever she tried to poop she pushed so hard she would spit up threw her nose. I did 1 TSP of syrup to every 4oz of formula/ breast milk with every bottle. It doesn't work right away it does take a few days to notice an effect. I found prune juice worked better and faster. I'm not sure how much prune juice you are giving but maybe up it frequency or dose. Try feeding him baby food that encourages softer poops like prunes, pears and apples (apples are good for some and not for others) avoid binding foods like rice and use oatmeal avoid bananas and sweet potatoes. Also if your child has started teething brush his teeth after the bootle b/c it is very sugery. Good luck!

I would recommend trying "Natural Calm for Babies", a magnesium supplement that you mix with water and give in a bottle. It works every time for us, and without using a processed product (corn syrup) that has most likely been made from genetically modified corn. I get it at my local health store (Common Crow in Gloucester) but I think they have it at Whole Foods and online as well.
Reflux meds for infants are heavily overprescribed these days as well - may want to re-examine if there are other ways to help the baby without these meds. They were prescribed for our little guy too but we were able to help him through dietary changes and homeopathic remedies like Colic Calm (www.coliccalm.com).

I used kryo syrup to help my daughter go for awhile. I used about a teaspoon in 4 ounces of breastmilk. It didn't always work for her and her natural pooping pattern when she was younger was to go about every 5 days and it was huge. I then heard that kyro syrup can cause the same problem as giving a young child honey.

My daughter starting to go more regularly after she started solids. Also pear juice worked for her too.

Hi M.

I had the same problem with my son and tried everything I found that the best of all was mineral oil, our pediatrician recommended it, you start with one teaspoon in a yougurt ( it needs to be added to food with young kids in case they breath it in ) apparantly what I thought was constipation was actually my son straining to hold his poop IN because he was trying to avoid the pain (poor baby) anyway I really have been through all the remedies and this one really works!! So good luck!! A.

Hi,
I have some read some great responses, so I won't add much! One woman reminded me, however, that when my daughter was a baby she only pooped once a week or every 10 days! The doctor said it was normal. Anyway, my friend swears by molasses as a laxative and it did work for my daughter a couple of times-I mixed about a 1/2 tbls. with half cup of water. You can use a dropper dispenser if need be. Also, I just joined a MOMS club in my area that is great-google "MOMS Club" and you can then figure out how to find one in your area (it's international).Good luck!

First off - some children do not need a bowel movement every day.
Second - if you are using suppositories every day, you need to talk with your pediatrician (or find another one).

That said - I've had similar issues with my son, who is now 3 1/3 years. He's been getting myralax (a stool softener, not a laxative) since he was only a few months old and still in the NICU. It's been recommended to us to give white grape juice - better than prune juice (tastes better, more gentle on the system, yet quite effective - does have lots of natural sugar - so wipe off gums or brush teeth to prevent future tooth decay).

We also learned the hard way constipating foods to avoid when he started eating food - cooked carrots (raw okay); apple sauce (raw okay); rice cereal or any form of rice; bananas - most of the basic foods children start off with!

M., I would not recommend using Karo syrup. You have to read up on this more, but I have heard that it can cause botchulism. Try the water again, just giving your baby as much as two ounces of water once or twice a day is all that is needed to soften the stools. Personally, I love Milicon. It is a little expensive but you can purchase a non-named brand (such as the CVS version-Infant’s gas relief). Just make sure the active ingredient is Simethicone-talk to the pharmacist for further assistance. It is used to relieve gas in infants, but in my experience, it also MADE my kids poop as well. Good luck!

my daughter had the same problems. i used the light karo syrup. excuse me for my frankness, but i don't know how else to describe it.....Karo syrup will only "lube" the poop - so it will still be hard. prunes will soften the poop. use the what you have to go get over this "attack" but once this spell is over, use the prunes to keep him regular.

for the karo syrup - i think i twas 1tbp for every 3oz of formula and put it right in the bottle. you can do this in every bottle until the "attack" is over.

i used prune juice - in 1 bottle a day i would put 1/2 oz of prune juice to keep her regular. if i saw her starting to get constipated i would up it to 1oz.

if you are using rice cereal switch to either oatmeal or barley it's less binding.

avoid all the baby food w/ bananas (alot of the level 2 fruits are mixed with bananans etc).

once my daughter turned 1 and was eating more regular food (not baby food) and was off formula and onto whole milk i didn't need to use the prune juice anymore.

i still need to watch her consumption of bananas & cheese (of course they are her favorite) but i counter act them with rasins or grapes to keep her regular.

When my son was constipated his pediatrician recommended dark corn syrup, it was either 1/2 tsp or 1 tsp (I can't remember which) into his formula. I found it did help.
