Just for Fun -Feel Good Story About My Daughter and Our Daisy Troop

In my daughters kindergarten class there are three of my eight GS. Last night at school they had an Art Show and Writers Gallery.
Each student in her class wrote a paper about a picture (of someone, something) that is near and dear to them. My daughter was able to keep it a secret from me that she chose to write about me. I have been struggling with sticking to the GS Leader role, as it is time consuming and quite frustrating...yet super fun in many ways.

Last night reading this near and dear article, I was so moved by my daughter and her words. Then we started leaving compliments on other kids papers and such. When we returned to my daughters page I noticed that one of my GS had left a note. It said "I love your mom too"...

So in front of a room full of people I stood there in tears, as I know that no matter what I have made a difference in someone one’s life and am so happy that my daughter has friends that are truly amazing. I will not be quitting on these girls but thought I wanted to share with all my mama friends that giving some of your time to these kids is truly worth it. Just amazing how one moment has changed my view....I always thought I was meant to be a teacher and now I am.

So love hearing all of your wonderful stories about kids, life and other things…thought maybe we could share feel good moments about our kids…I know I can always use a good story to move my day along. What are your feel good moments? What has happened to you to make you change your mind about volunteer work, society, etc?

What can I do next?

You might want to update this as a question on the end; it might get pulled ;)

One time when I was preggers with #3 (and feeling HUGE), I was helping out in my 7 year olds classroom. This little boy came up to me and said 'Mrs Emilys mom, I KNOW you're going to have a beautiful baby!' I was like 'oh yeah? How do you know?' He says 'Because you're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, even prettier than MY mom'.... OMG AWWWW!! I wanted to put him in my pocket and take him home, LOL!!

My mom was our leader along with my best friends mom. I wouldn't have changed that for anything. Even though my mom doesn't tell me often that she loves me she sure does show it through other actions.

That is awesome that you are making such a big impact of the life's of these little girls. Keep up the good work and I wish we had more Mommy's like you to step up to the plate. Kids need someone positive to look up to.

This just moved me to tears too.

My best friend is a Cub Scout leader. Two years ago she took over and we had about 6 in our troop. Last year and there were 8-9 regularly. This year she has 14 4th grade boys. THe teachers have told her how much the boys talk about CubScuts and what the last lesson was and how Ms A wants them to do this or that. About 6 are in the same class, maybe 8 in the same school. She is staying only for the boys as the leadersip in her pack leaves much to be desired. We had to move last year (military) or she would have 15 boys.

I have either taught Sunday School, helped in Pioneer Girls (like girl scouts but Christ centered) or been an adult sponsor for Youth Group at my church since my kids were little. It's always tough to carve out the time to prepare, get there, work with the kids (who can be difficult). For three years I had one group of girls in Sunday school becuase no other teacher wanted them. They moved from 3rd grade to 4th and, with a hiapy sich, I'd say good-bye and wish thier new Suday School teacher well. That week the children's pastor called and asked if I'd take this group of girls again. this went on for the next two years. They were a challenge. There were a few self-centered girls who always turned the conversations back to themsevles, their gymnastics achievements, soccer goals, new clothes, vacation, etc. There were a few VERY talkative ones, another one or two who were know-it-alls. Overall there were about 13 of them. Every Sunday morning I'd dread that hour of trying to instill this month's virtue: patience, kindness, self-control. After they finished 5th grade and moved to middle school I decided I'd also move to middle school youth group - go figure. (my son is the same age so I actually get to be involved with him too)

I've found out in the last year that while these girls have gone through the last 3 years with me some of their families have gone through tough times. Parents of some of these girls have pulled me aside when they've come to get their kids from youth group (our middle school YG has 50 - 60 kids) and they've shared things about their girls, things that have happened in their family, ways I was able to impact their thoughts & opinions, truths about God that I've shared with them that made a difference, etc. Moms have told me how blessed they were when they saw that I ahve moved to YG with their girls, how they felt more secure about a youth retreat far away knowing that their girls would be bunking with me, etc. But the best was when the group of girls asked the youth leader if they could please get bunked with me - over the choice of the college girls!

So often the rewards are not immediate - but they come later. ;o)

Very nice! That was a touching story, nice to get recognition for doing something that is very time consuming.

I pushed my husband to do coaching for my daughters K-1 soccer team this year. I love watching him coach, spend time with his daughter and see the respect for him from all that kids! He was so reluctant to do it, because of the way parents can sometimes be.

I give all the volunteer parents much respect for taking on coaching, GS, etc...its a lot of work!
