Is the Bumbo a Worthwhile Product

I am attending a baby shower on Saturday for a very good friend. The gift I really wanted to give her - The My Breast Friend Nursing Pillow - was already purchased. The store was about to close so I ran around and grabbed the Bumbo seat. They didn't have these when I had my little ones, but it looks cool. It wasn't on her registry so I am wondering if I should give it or not. Did you use this product? Did you like/dislike it and why? Should I give it to her or return it and get a box of diapers instead? Thanks for all the advice in advance ladies. I always enjoy reading my mamasource responses.

What can I do next?

Definately, NOT a good product for an infant that is not ready to be sitting up yet. One of my clients' has her triplets that sees Dr. Sears and he chastised her when he found out they were in them too early. His reasons are that an infant should not be put in a position that the child is developmentally not already in. Perhaps at a certain point, the product is useful.

I would be careful. They have been recalled because of babies falling out and hurting their heads.Look up Bumbo recall online and you will get alot of info about it.

Loved, loved, loved the Bumbo!! I used it until their little fat legs just wouldn't squeeze into it anymore. We took them everywhere with us; we used them as highchairs in the beginning, can't say enough.

Good luck!

i really enjoyed it! it let my daughter sit up and be fully supported all around (i used it after she could hold her head well) it gives them a different veiw aside from the belly or back. and lets them be able to reach for hanging toys and such. not to mention it helps strengthen their backs and neck! i would go ahead and give it!

It's a great product. My daughter absolutely loved it! It supports their head, neck, and back in a comfortable position. It's perfect for when they start to eat baby food...it's a great feeding accessory. However, like any other infant product, you should supervise the child. I never had a problem with my daughter trying to climb out or escape. If they recalled the Bumbo, it wouldn't still be in stores deemed "safe to sell." All in all, a good choice.

i wouldn't get it if it wasn't on her registry. it is useful up until the crawling stage. some babies like it and some don't. my son liked it but he was a big baby and wasn't able to fit in it (even though he wasn't crawling yet). i'm leaning towards picking a different gift off of the registry or buying a box of diapers.

hope that helps.

I loved the bumbo for my daighter, now 9 months. It was easy to feed her in and help her sit up sooner (5 months). I think it is a great gift, but you can only really use it till they can crawl...still worth it!

From what I've seen it's one of those products that babies either love or hate. My son hated being in his and it was a total waste of money for us. That said, I know plenty of babies who got lots of use out of theirs.

I wouldn't worry about the recall. This was a voluntary recall done by the manufacturer. Two babies were very hurt (one may have died, I don't remember) after flinging themselves out of the seat. In both instances the seat was placed on top of a counter (the instrux explicitly state NOT to do this) and the babies were left unsupervised. As in most cases the baby shouldn't be left unattended while in the seat.

I think it's a fine gift, but don't be offended if your friend returns it for something else. Since it wasn't on her registry I'm assuming she probably doesn't want one. Some people feel that placing a baby in the chair isn't good for their hips. I personally don't think there's anything to that, but some feel strongly.

I don't think she would mind getting the Bumbo and deciding for herself whether she wants it or not. I didn't put one on my registry but I wish I would have because I really want one now. Just make sure you give her a gift receipt. If she doesn't want it it will be fun for her to pick out something she didn't end up getting at her shower. Diapers are kind of a bummer gift to me because you use them and they're gone. but hey you have to have them so what can I say!

love the bumbo! I first got it for my 2 year old when he was 5 mos. it was a great tool to help him see the world at a diffrent angle. When they can start to sit up in mommys lap, they are ready for the bumbo. Its saves mommy needing to hold them. My now 6 month old daughter uses it, and started when she was 4 months old. She has an occupational therapist to help her with some nerve damage (and weak muscles), and one day the O.T. came over with the bumbo and said lets try her in this for a bit. I said "wait I have that!". She said it would help strengthen her muscles for being able to sit up on her own. And sure enough, she was sitting on her own (un-assisted) just before 6 mos. Totally worth it. As for it not being on her registry, maybe she didn't know about it? There are so many great products out there that are not on registry's because new moms don't know about them yet. Any doubts, diapers are always used and never returned!

I love the Bumbo! My 15-month-old son barely fits in it now, but we still use it. My husband puts it on top of my son's dresser and gives him a hair cut while he sits in it. It was great for when my son was just learning to sit up on his own.

I bought one for my son and I love it. i had always wanted to buy one for my oldest and jut never got around to it. It helped a lot. He still uses it. He can climb out now but he pulls it out every morning for his oatmeal breakfast. i would get her one, she may not even know what it is. I also bought one for my niece and my sister loves it.
