Is My Baby Fat

My DD is 4 months old yesterday. We had her checkup and shots on Mon. She weighs 15.2 and is 24 1/4" long. Pedi said that is the 80% for weight and 50% for height. Does that mean she is fat? Should I be concerned. She eats anywhere from 28-40 oz a day it just depends.

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
Don't worry AT all! My son was 10lbs 3oz at birth and 20lbs by 6 mths! I remember the doctor saying he was the weight of a 1 yr old and in the 95th percentile!

He's now almost 2 and weighs 28 lbs so they do start slowing down with weight as they get older and more active.
Don't worry, she sounds like she's at a great, healthy weight.
Take Care!

Your baby is not fat. Trust me if the doctor was concerned then they would tell you. All babies grow at different rates and they percentages constantly change. As long as you're not purposely overfeeding your baby don't worry. It's just baby c***, when they start crawling and walking those percentages will start to even out.

don't worry! until she starts being active she may be bigger! my daughter was 9.10 lbs when she was born and weighed 19.4 lbs @ 6.5 months....any dr will tell you not to restrict of put ANY baby on a "diet" at such a young age...don't worry about it...bigger babies require more food..it's normal!

M.,
she sounds perfectly normal and she will lean out as she becomes more active. A good formula for how much she needs to eat to be nutritionally stable is this:
2.5 oz x body wt every 24 hours
2.5 X 15.2 = 38 oz per day. Now as she continues to grow she will of course need more and she will get alot of it as she begins to eat cereals etc in another month or 2.

To determine the amt per bottle just divide the 24 hour amount by the number of feedings per day.
So if she is taking a bottle she probably gets 5-6 feedings per day or from 5.6 to 6.4 oz each time she eats. Babies are like us, there is a delay from stomach to brain on feeling full. Like we need that 3rd slice of pizza Becauseeeeeee?(it just tastes good) So she may keep eating because she needs to suck, or it tastes good to her and she doesn't know she is full. These of course are guidelines to help you. None of us falls into seriously hard and fast rules.
I hope this is helpful, enjoy your baby and don't worry about all of the "rules". It seems they grow up just fine in spite of us.

Both of my children were always in the top percentiles for weight and just barely above "normal" for height. My pedi was never concerned despite the massive rolls on my children's arms and legs. Once they started to really walk and run they began to grow taller and got much thinner. They are both now "average" for weight and in the upper percentiles for height. I would not be concerned, especially if the pedi did not say much about it. Those percentages just mean that if she is in the 80% she is heavier than 80 of 100 kids (sounds bad, but that is a huge range of weights). Remember that range includes premies, etc. Hope that helps.

My DD weighed 15.5 at her 4 month check up, and I had the same concern! We have our 6 month check up next week. I'm glad to see all the other posts. Looks like there shouldn't be any worries for either of us :)

Haylee is 4 years old right now and weighs 31 pounds. (turned 4 in May.) When she turned one she was a whopping 29.5 pounds. (She was a real chunker with rolls on the arms and legs..big baby, but only 6.5 at birth) i was so scared she was going to be big like I am....but no worries. In 3 years she has gained only 2 pounds. She is now in the low percentage for weight but at 95% on the height, she is going to be tall and skinny like her daddy. (Whew!) So they are all different, and before the age of 2 or 3 you can not tell, they have to grow out of the baby fat. No worries, if you need to be worried your Dr. will tell you that it is out of hand and something needs to be done.

My youngest was born at 36 weeks and weighed 10lbs. He has always been at or above the top of the growth chart for weight, height, and head circumference. Now he is 28 months and weighs 35-36 pounds. He is just a big boy! I wouldn't worry!

I wouldn't worry. She's so so young! My son was 90% percentile for height and weight until he started crawling. He then shot down to 50th percentile for a while.
