Hi Moms,
My son is 6 months old and I would like him to get exposed to the pool. Do you know of any good yet resonable infant swimming classes in Chicago?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your advise. We joined the aqua babies class at GAC. It is wonderful. Initially my son was scared to enter the pool. But now after 4 classes he is a lot more relaxed and seems to be having fun.

Aquababies at the Galter Life Center. It is $65 for 8 weeks I think. Regular pools are too cool for young babies. My 18 month old is in a Chicago Park District program now, but she starts shivering after 15 minutes. We are going back to Aquababies.

Hi! I am a member of the Galter Life Center at 5157 N. Francisco which is a block from Swedish Covenant Hospital. I believe they have such classes but not sure exactly nor do I know the costs though you would be able to get a famliy or even temporary membership to check it out. Wells Park at Montrose and Lincoln may also have them. Galter's web site is, I believe,
galterlifecenter.org
and the phone is ###-###-####
Good luck!

I've also taken my girls to the Chicago Park District - the Mann Park pool on the far southeast side has wonderful guards. Depending upon where in the city you are - the Whiting Indiana Community Center has great, reasonable classes. My girls learned an amazing amount in a short time there.

I highly recommend Galter Life Center. They have a nice heated indoor pool. We did this with our daughter when she was 6 months. So much fun!

If you go to the chicago park district website and look for a pool in your area, there are pretty reasonable classes.

I started my kids early (Ridge Park in Beverly has an indoor pool!) and there is a current session going on now. The next session begins in march and I am pretty sure you can start to "view" those classes online after February 9th.

The prices are very reasonable.

Hi!

I take my daughter (8 months) to the YMCA. They have classes for infants over the age of 6 months. She really enjoys them. It's not to expensive either. I hope you get more suggestions. Good luck!

We took our son the the Evanston Athletic Club when he was four months old. They have a great infant class! We're enrolled there again this winter for the toddler class. We live in the City and its a little out of the way but the facility is nice, they are open to non-members and they do the classes in the therapy pool which is 80-something degrees. So we never worried that he would be too cold. They have classes during the week and on Saturdays. We've been taking the classes on Sat mornings and then going to lunch at some of the places nearby, making a nice family day out of it.

We take our daughter to a Chicago Park District class. She loves it. I don't know if they have classes for children as young as your son (We started her in a Tiny Tots class that I think is for 18 - 36 mos). Summer's right around the corner....if you are just looking to get him comfotable with the water, just take him to the pool once it gets warmer.
The other option is to look into private gyms with pools to see what they have (Lakeshore, etc.)

Hi,

My daughter is also 6mo. old and I plan on signing her up for a swimming class too. We are moving in two weeks to West Rogers Park and I was told that the Bernard Horwotitz JCC has in indoor pool and has mom and baby classes. You don't have to be jewish to to take the class. Also, I was looking in to the YMCA. Good luck and maybe I will run in to you at class! :)

I also take my son to aquababies. It is $70 for 8 weeks if you are not a member. It's a little pricey, since it is only 30 minutes, but I feel like it's mostly worth it. (Mostly because I work 40 hours a week and this is nice quality time. If I was a stay at home mom I might find it too expensive.) Atleast until he is old enough for the park district classes (they start at 18 months). I also take my son (7 months old) to the tot family swim at welles park. It is free and happens two or three times a week. You can get a schedule from the front desk at the fieldhouse. Welles park in on sunnyside, between western and lincoln and wilson and montrose. The nice thing about tot family swim is they only allow children under 6 with a parent in the pool. So, you dont have the big kids splashing around. Most often Welles park in pretty warm. I also take aqua fitness classes there twice a week. The park district is a nice resource. Another option is to fill up your own tub and get in there with your baby. We started from the very beginning giving our son baths with myself or my husband, a full tub and him. Now he LOVES the water and isnt frightened at all. Plus all those "Family Baths" brought helped us be really close as a family. Have Fun!

The YMCA has shimp/perch classes for babies starting at 6 months. We're in it now and my son loves it. You don't have to be a member.
