Hi! I am finally getting rid of all my baby things. i have over 10 bins of baby clothes up to size 3 in girls, plus my maternity clothes. We are having a garage sale this week, priced .50 each, but what do I do with all the ones that do not sell. They are in great condition, some never worn and I'd like to see someone who really needs these items get them. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks! K.
There is an organization called "First Things First" in Lombard that will take them. They provide food, clothing, & accessories (cribs, strollers, everything!) for families in need. It's thru "The Outreach House" and helps familes in Villa Park & Lombard.

If you’re really looking to give them to a place that needs them, I would highly recommend looking into a crisis pregnancy center (most larger towns have them or at least one nearby). You can call the center and ask for recommendations of women in need of girl’s clothing and pick the one you feel is the best choice. Or call a church and do the same thing. Resale shops and the Goodwill are nice but they’re businesses and only there to make money so essentially you’re really not donating to a good cause. After I’m done having babies, I’m donating everything thing I have to most likely a woman at a crisis pregnancy center. I have been blessed enough in life to have all that I do that I think it would be great to pass it along to someone who really has a significant need. I appreciate you feel the same!

There is a pregnancy crisis center called The Life Center in Elgin on route 25. They are happy to take anything that has to do with babies and maternity (and small kids too, I believe). Their hours are M,T,W,F 10am-5pm and Sat. 10am-12pm. They are closed on Thursdays and Sundays. Their phone number is ###-###-####.

Depending on where you live, there are several great organizations who would be happy to take the items (call first to make sure they accept them.) One that comes to mind is WINGS (I think it stands for Women In Need Growing Strong.) WINGS helps women in domestic voilence and homeless situations.
Another is in Palatine. The thrift-store is called Twice Blessed and it's on Northwest Highway (near Quest school.) The store is run by volunteers and supports Misericordia - an organization that helps residents with mental and physical disabilities that is located in Chicago.
I don't know about WINGS, but at Twice Blessed, if the items are not suitable enough for sale or if they don't take them, they will donate them to the Salvation Army so it just keeps getting passed down to organizations who may benefit from them.
Good luck with your sale. Of course if you wanted to try to get some extra cash out of the maternity clothes - maybe check into maternity resale. The name of the shop I'm thinking of escapes me at the moment, but it's in Schaumburg on Roselle road, just north of Golf, west side of the street next to Plato's closet...(Clothes Mentor, maybe? I think there are other locations in Naperville as well.)

I saw an article in the Northwest herald a few months back about a location called the Blessing Barn. It is a location that will accept your donations and sort through them, organize them and distribute them at no cost to people in need. Most of their clientele are single parents, or people that got out of bad domestic situations, and are trying to get back on their feet. After reading the article I am now saving all my donations to go to them. Their phone number is ###-###-####.
I live in Elgin too and I had a baby girl in January. Funds are very tight at home (Catholic school teacher)and I'd love to visit your sale. Could you email me the location?

There are tons of organizations that would happily accept your garage sale leftovers. The one closest to me is Teen Parent Connection. They provide services to pregnant and parenting teens/young adults. www.teenparentconnection.org
Of course there's always Goodwill and I tend to also post items on FreeCycle. www.freecycle.org On this site you post items you want to get rid of for free and those interested email you. You can then pick who you want to take them. Good luck with your garage sale and deciding what to do with all the leftovers.

Freecycle.org (Yahoo Group) is an organization that allows you to have people pick up items from you and you don't have to take the kids out to get rid of items. Check the website for full details. Each town has their own group. Once you give away things feel free to ask for things you may need. It's a wonderful recycling of items still usable.

I see someone already suggested freecycle. It's wonderful. Aside from some no-shows that say they are coming to pick up something and don't, it's a great way to find good homes for your unused items and help the earth too.
