I am a relatively new mom (son 9 mos old) and am invited to my first one-year-old birthday a friend is having for her son. Any ideas on a not-too-expensive gift that the son and mom will like? Any gifts you all have received that you really enjoyed?

Thanks so much for your help!

Baby Einstein has a brand new DVD out. It looks fantastic and perfectly age appropiate.

Here is a little blurb about it.

Baby's Favorite Places $19.99
https://www.babyeinstein.com/store/productdetail.asp?Cart...

At 12 months babies are discovering a whole new range of people, places and experiences that make up their daily activities. Baby's Favorite Places provides a playful, interactive introduction to first words from around town - spoken and in sign language. Special guest Marlee Matlin introduces little ones to the concept of nonverbal communication, which provide a strong foundation for early literacy and stimulate intellectual development.

Get a few clear plastic containers 2" x 2" x 3" (not big) with screw on tops. Fill them with colorful and or noise making materials. Do a few with different colored water (made from food coloring), then pennies, then dried beans, etc... You get the idea. Mom can use them to teach color, the child loves them becasue they make noise... If the neck is not too big they will also use it as a teether. Get creative. BE SURE TO SUPER GLUE THE TOP ON. I used the brush on kind. I have a new baby so we have pulled our baby toys out. My son is 2.5 and sill still shake the pennies and colored water from time to time.

Check out my birthday t-shirts at www.lizzyzinn.com. Look under "clothes", also I have loved book gifts. Anything with a good rhyming pattern like "FooT Book" by Seuss, Any bath toy is a pleasure for kids and very inexpensive too!

One Year olds LOVE push toys as they are just figuring out how to walk. You can find several for under 20 dollars at most stores. Good luck! A grocery cart is a fun toy as he can put stuff in it! Both of my kids loved push toys at this age and still do!

contribute to his college fund. he's 1, he's going to get a ton of toys and clothes. college money is great for kids who are too young to know any difference.

You can never go wrong with books. Maybe pick a few from one author or series. Obviously board books are gonna work best but a waterproof or fabric one would be fun too. This age is also fun to introduce bath toys that they can play with (not just squirt toys or floaties). Since it is summer time, a sprinkler toy (or other outdoor toy like sand buckets) would be fun as well. Hope these ideas help! Angela

Target has the Mega Blocks, they are leggos but bigger so it's easier for the baby to snap them together. My son is now 3 and still plays with them and so does my 1 1/2 year old. I think the bucket is $10.00. Also, look for age appropriate items 12-18 months to help build his thinking/logic skills.

I thought it was interesting that you were looking for a gift that the son and mom will like. Not sure how you meant that but I would be carefull not to fall into the trap of buying birthday gifts to impress the parents (I found myself doing this in the begining). As you get invited to more and more birthday parties, it could get expensive to attend if you are concerned about the parents. The parents should be glad for your participation in the event and the thoughtfullness of any age appropriate gift.

Take Care...D.

I went to the $1 store and got my son books with the hard pages and he really enjoys them as well as blocks that they sell in Target that have the cars, farm animals, etc inside that attach to each other. I also got him a Baby Einstein book that has the bottons on the side that makes music or Baby Einstein new DVD. I am sure anything that you get him he will enjoy.

Good Luck, Educational stuff are Always great:)
