i suffered with HG with all of my pregnancies. i know it prob seems like her doctors aren't "doing anything", but in all actuality, there's just not a lot that can be done. i used zofran or kytril(basically the same thing), sometimes phenergan(didn't use as much b/c it causes me to be MUCH more tired than the average person when taking it). it's one of those things that you do the best you can to manage, but there's no magic bullet. i wound up in CCU with my first pregnancy after i lost over 30lbs and wound up weighing about 94lbs 5 months pregnant, they gave me a PICC line to feed me that way, but i ended up with an MRSE infection in the line, so i would NEVER go that route again, i very nearly died. iv fluids when needed, along with the anti-emetic meds, is about all that can be done. she could look into getting a zofran pump, or seeing if her dr will let her try out an rx for reglan. i wish her well, it's TOUGH to go through all that. i lost 3 pregnancies as well, in addition to the 3 that i carried full term, but i have no reason to believe the 3 losses were at all related to my HG. good luck!

I'm so sorry to hear of your friend's suffering. I remember those horrible months. Staying in a really cool/cold room helped some. Drinking Ensure helped a little too. If she can get to the point where she can hold something down, be sure to tell her never to let her stomach get completely empty.

God Bless,
A.

I am pregnant with #3 and also had HG. Different things work for different women. She should see if there is a high risk obgyn and try different meds. Zofran always worked in the past but for this one I had to use Reglan. I also had a pic line with my 2nd daughter so I got fluids and iv meds constantly. I feel for your friend and I hope and pray it gets better and she doesnt lose a baby. She could also try lemon products, I made lemonade and that helped alot or sucking on lemon drops or lemon cough drops....ginger also helps and Vit B6 pills. Good luck!

P.,

I am in week 20 and suffering through my 2nd pregnancy with HG. I was sick until the day I delivered my son four years ago and am experiencing mostly the same this time. A friend referred me to this website and it helped me to feel a bit more sane and explain HG to my husband and mother. Maybe it will help her too.

Good luck to her. C.

I also had this with both of my pregnancies. I was fortunate to get some relief with Zofran. I agree with the other post-- if she can try to keep eating constantly-- like bites of saltine crackers-- it will help if her stomach never is compleyely empty. The feeling is awful-- talking to other women who had the same thing really helped me.

Best of luck to your friend.

I'm sorry I don't have advice. I also had HG with both of my pregnancies and was in and out of the hospital. Zofran didn't help me, nothing did. I just stayed hydrated as best I could, yet miserable, with the IVs and drinking all the fluids I could (hoping I could keep them down). I even gained weight somehow. I can't imagine losing a baby. I just wanted you to know how sorry I am for your friend. I hope she finds something that helps her through this pregnancy and that she and her baby are healthy.

I went through this with my first son. I had home health with IV fluids given daily, was on Zofran as well. Nothing helped much, just had to tough it out, and believe me it is MISERABLE!.

Staying well hydrated is the best defense because although you'll still be sick on the stomach, dehydration makes it worse. What I would do is go ahead and throw up and eat and drink IMMEDIATELY afterwards. I could keep it down for an hour or so, throw up again, then ear and drink. That hour of so in between gave my body enough time to absorb just enough to keep me going.

Tell your friend to be strong and keep thinking about that precious baby. That's what got me through. Keep herself busy and distracted. Believe me, almost as soon as she delivers, the nausea will disappear and in its place will be a beautiful, healthy baby. Once the baby is hear she'll soon forget these tough 9 months. I did, I had 3 more kids after being so sick with the first :)

This is long I apologize! I am dealing with this with my current pregnancy! The good news is the baby should be just fine...I couldn't believe with everything I have and am going through how healthy the baby is, just not me. First I want to recommend this web site. www.helpher.org have her get started in the forum they are great help, all women who are dealing HG right now. I am currently in the third trimester forum but she will find lots of use out of the first. As far as help from the doctor he/she is doing what he can already. This is still an issue that is not fully understood. There is no cure other then delivery or aborting, and I don't think she wants to abort it will get better I promise. I had to get IV's every other to every day for over 90 days. I chose to get a new IV put in each time but she can get a mid-line or a PICC line put in and have her IV's done at home. I found that the most important thing to keep from getting extremely sick is avoiding at all costs mixing fluids and solids, and by fluids I mean drinks that go into the tummy. My doctor/midwife had me eat all that I could solids wise and I just received my drinks via IV fluids. Made a huge difference. I went 13 days without any liquids and not keeping any food down for more the 30 minutes before I was hospitalized and diagnosed with HG at 8 weeks along. Zonfran with Reglan/benadryl helped me get over the worst I started it around 9 weeks, the reglan I think really made a difference. I no longer have to get IV's and am off the nausea medicine, I am still sick....what I would consider regular morning sickness like I had with my first two. I am almost 33 weeks and can't wait to deliver. I was first sick at 3weeks 4 days pregnant before most people even get a positive test and it is by far one of the hardest most emotionally and physically draining things that I and my husband has ever had to deal with. I had no support in the beginning as everyone thought I was just overreacting so I really struggled it wasn't until I was 15 weeks along and still sick as can be that family started to realize how severely sick I was. The 10 plus visits to the ER just wasn't proof enough for them. Oh and the doctor probably mentioned already but straight water is the harshes thing on a stomach so avoid at all costs. I couldn't eat apples, grapes, celery, oranges, and I did not drink ANYTHING for over 60 days, my thirst quench oddly was cherry tomatoes (the little ones), for some reason those where fine on my tummy! I would relapse a few times because the feeling of thirst in my mouth was so overwhelming but I would always just toss it back up. Each person with HG has different things that work it's trial and error, Now after the worst I can drink A&W root beer and that is it. I am not even going to mess with trying anything else because I know it works. Not the healthiest but better then nothing at all. You are a great friend for being by her side and just try to remember that this is not her fault she has little to no control over how she feels, she will get through this and should have a beautiful baby for all her hard work. Feel free to send me a message in private if you wish. So few women really deal with the severe HG and it is by no means a fun and easy road to travel.

I had Hyperemesis with all of mine and was on home IVs and in the hospital also. I'm pregnant with #5 now and I was going to try a homeopathic doctor but I couldn't afford it. I didn't have to be on IVs with this one, thankfully, and I found that Endocreme progesterone cream and lots of ginger root supplements really helped me. My problem was that I became allergic to both of those things. I lost a child due to HG because this doctor didn't treat it at all and I lost 21 pounds and couldn't keep anything down. My other pregnancies, my doctor treated the HG and I didn't lose any of them... good luck to your friend!

Hi P.,

I had this with all three of my girls for the entire 9 months. I did the zofran and I did a two week treatment of steriods which helped a little. Not much works but to try and keep busy. There really isn't much you can do. She can try the three age old remedies which would be ginger, cinnamon and lemon. The only thing that worked for me were lemon heads and bubble water. One thing that helped me mentally was to look at pictures of woman carring mutiples. Now that just can't be pleasant. Also I had to get ivs in the cancer unit at my hospital and I tell you that made me realize what I was going through wasn't so bad. One thing, just don't keep telling her, oh you only have three months to go or anything like that because even one week seems like a lifetime when you are sick to your stomach 24/7
