Hysterectomy Recovery

I'm going to be having a hysterectomy next week. I have had 4 c-sections and had ALOT of scar tissue removed with the last one...almost 6 years ago.

I was wondering how long recovery took for those of you who had multiple c-sections before a hysterectomy. How long did it take for you to get to the point of not thinking about the surgery anymore. i've read that initial recovery is 6 weeks but that you still need to be somewhat careful for the next 6 months or so.

thanks in advance.

I do not know about scar tissue and/or c-sections............

I DO know I had a hysterectomy in 5/01 and it was THE BEST thing I ever did for myself. I have never felt more free or better than I have for the last 8 yrs.

I got a lot of information (good and bad) from a site called www.hystersisters.com It was a blessing to me. My story (very positive) is listed there.

Fortunately I never had many of the side effects that are talked about on the site which are weight gain, swelly belly, moodiness, no sex drive, etc. My boobs did grow to a perky DD and I happen to love that so it is a positive effect to me... LOL

The hardest part of my surgery was waiting for the day and time. Man...that was tough. After that...piece of cake...just 1 day of major pain for me and I was done. I did have to wait 2 weeks to drive and that was it. BUMMER but not a bad deal.

I have never felt better, looked better and had great results as I have had since my surgery. I am SO glad I did it and I feel So much better.

I did have everything taken out......I am on a patch for HRT. I'd rather risk breast cancer (which can more easily be detected and cured vs ovarian cancer which is most difficult to detect and cure).

I have NEVER felt or looked better. My surgery was the best thing I ever did for myself and my family.

Best wishes to you!

I had a hysterectomy about 7 weeks ago, laparoscopic and the recovery from that has been great. I also had a bladder suspension and that has been the most painful and slow recovey of the two procedures.
Do expect at least 8 days of really not doing anything, and I am still getting tired in the afternoon and cannot lift anything heavier than 10 pounds.
Expect to have a catheter for a couple of days maybe and this is very uncomfortable, so plan to do NOTHING for again the first week of possible.
Good luck and you will feel so much better after it.

I had c-sections in '86, '88, & '90. I had a bladder suspension and my uterus removed in June 2007. I, too, had a lot of scar tissue and my uterus had begun to do some really nasty things to itself. When the doctors tell you SIX weeks, they mean SIX weeks. I tried to do too much prior to that and paid the price. Nothing major; just had to be on bed rest for a weekend to make sure I got the rest I was supposed to have. Shortly after the 6 week mark, I began to feel so much better and never had to limit any activities after that. But, this recovery was MUCH harder than any of my c-sections. Plus, I was alot older with my hysterectomy than my c-sections. I truly began not to think too much about my surgery just about the 3 month mark. I had gone several months before I realized, "Oh yeah, I don't have to worry about periods anymore"! Now, that was a happy day because it had been such a long time since I'd thought about anything regarding the surgery and the reasons for it.

Good luck to you. Take care of yourself and listen to the doctors (they really do know what they're doing). You will be fine and will be so happy you made this decision!

I had a partial(Uterus removal) in 12/07 and it was harder than the c-section I had in May 05. It took me 8 weeks to recover. I ended up having my uterus attached to my intestines, bowels and navel and had to have a transfussion and became anemic for 6 wks. I had a lot of scar tissue so the best thing is walking to break up any possible scar tissue and make sure you take any meds for pain, bowels, etc. Good Luck and I will be praying for you.

Well I had a hysterectomy March 13 2009 and I am still recovering. I had 2 prior c sections and 2 D &C.
I jad a open hysterectomy and about week after surgery my stitches came open and was put on a wound vac and still on it. It contines to pump out fluid and is helping the wound heal from the bottom up or as some say from the inside out.

I was expecting the 6 weeks but not this. All I can say is Pray and you will get through it. I would never had the surgery if they hadn't found cancer. But the good news is they removed the cancer and I can be here for my 2 greatest blessing precious little girl who just turned 4 and a boy age 5. So I have many reasons to live as long as I can.

Sometimes I just pray for help through each day and
hope the next day will be better. Maybe one day this will just be a memory.

Good luck !

I had to have an open hysterectomy. I'm not going to lie, the recovery has been difficult. I get tired very easily and it still hurts sometimes, especially if I've been lifting anything. Some people seem to bounce back more quickly, but the removal of scar tissue can make the surgery a little bit more complicated.

I had a lot of scar tissue as well. The doctors all told me to do very little lifting for about a year in order to avoid any more tears/adhesions. Even if you don't think you are overdoing it (no pain or any clues like that), you can still be forming adhesions if you jump back into things too quickly.

You've got lots of boys to help, so have them help you with laundry and other things that require a lot of twisting, lifting, and pulling for a while.

Good luck! You are going to feel GREAT after all of that nasty scar tissue is out of your body. You will be amazed!
