So What Happened?

Well I have my results now... Normal but HPV is still present. So no cancer but I do have HPV. I know I got it from my hubby but I am ok with it we have been together for 9 yrs this october, and he was with a girl prior to me so I know he contracted it from her ( talked to her about 3 days ago and she does have it). She is in the process of scheduling an appointment for leep as soon as can. No she is not a friend but due to the situation I got her email from a mutual and talked to her. Thank you for your information, help, and concern!

Hi C.,
I was diagnosed with HPV myself about 3 years ago and had a colposcopy and am doing fine. I read that 7 out of 10 HPV diagnoses never become cancerous and go away on it's own. There is a tone of information on the web, which you've probably already started researching. If you still need to talk feel free to email me at ____@____.com

First off take a deep breath! Now let me tell you that HPV is not some big, bad, horrible thing - and it is common to the point of ridiculous. Something near 75 or 80 percent of women who have sex have HPV. Now there are different types of HPV and SOME of them (not all or even most) can increase your risk for cervical cancer. That being said - most women who do have the cancer linked type of HPV never get cancer! Also just for your peace of mind - don't start thinking your husband must have been fooling around outside of you marriage for you to have gotten this. One or both of you have probably had it for quite a while. Many types of HPV resolve in 9 to 12 months on their own and don't come back - some do require special treatment to resolve and may recur but they are treatable and relatively simple to deal with. Feel free to email me if you want to talk - ____@____.com and in the meantime - hang in there it will be ok!

C.,
Everyone has already responded to your request. But I thought I would add just so you know that REALLY you aren't the only one and it's not necessarily a STD. I had a pap in March and then again the following May (because I was pregnant) and they found HPV. I figuered my husband cheated on me and my doctor made it very clear that it wasn't necessarily the truth. He could have given me HPY two years ago when we first started dating and it just didn't come up on my other paps. Or it could be the regular HPV the reason my sister has warts on her hands and I'm finally showing signs of infection but in a different way (I do not have genital warts, atleast not yet, thank God). Also nothing has been done, I need another exam this coming May (thanks for reminding me I need to call my doctor), and it has probably gone away on it's on from there. So don't freak out until you absolutely have to. :)

In 2005 I was diagnosed with HPV. They did a coloposcopy and determined that the cells were not pre-cancerous. I had/have bumps in my perineal area, I guess that's genital warts? Can't see 'em, couldn't tell ya! Anyway, at my PAP last year, I tested negative for HPV. My doctor says it can just go away like that. The bumps seem to be disappearing too. Definitely have them biopsy some cells, because if you're at risk for cervical cancer, you want to know ASAP! There are a couple different kinds of cells and it's my understanding (?) that the ones that cause warts are not cancerous. I was scared and worried too.

Also, just as a side note, I am so behind that HPV vaccine and my daughter will be getting it when she's old enough. I will do anything to reduce the risk that my child will get cancer.

Best Wishes, T.

As a P.S. There are over a hundred strains of HPV. Only like 20% are a type of STD. Look it up on Web M.D. Not everyone who has HPV has gential warts or another STD. So you may want to talk more indepth with your doctor.

Hi C....

For me I was told I had HPV after I had a couple abnormal paps. I went in for a colposcopy which pretty much is a pap where they look at the area with a microscope, they put a type of fluid which is like vinegar and it darkens the areas that are suspicious...they removed a little spot of tissue about the a quarter sized piece of a pea. Apparently they got whatever it was all out. Cause for 5 years now I have been clean with normal paps and nothing else. Your doc will go over everything with you and discuss the degree of HPV as well as the type. There are a few different types, as well as a few different ways you can have it. I guess most women will carry the cells for HPV or something along those lines, sometimes it can be a sexually transmitted type thing. The best thing to do is wait, discuss it with your doc then do some research. Either way dont freak out about it unless you have to. I drove myself mad, and fell into a major depression when I first found out cause of course I thought the worse than it turned out to be. Good luck to you, have faith, and take care.

I had hpv about a year ago. I had to go in for monthly paps for about 3 months, but it went away on its own, just like most cases do. I was very worried too, starting to think about my own mortality, but don't let it take over your thoughts. Majority of hpv cases go away on their own, and it's actually extremely common in women! So don't worry. Take your paps. Everything will work out fine!
