How to prevent allergic reaction to insect bites?

Everytime my 15 month old daughter gets a mosquito or insect bite, she has an allergic reaction. Sometimes she runs a low grade fever, and the bites are always huge, extremely red, and last for at least a week. The first time she got a mosquito bite, I completely freaked out because it looked so bad and I took her to the doctor. He said not to worry about it and she just must be sensitive to bites. I give her Benadryl when she gets a bug bite and keep hydrocortizone and neosporin on it. Just wondering if anyone else's child has this kind of reaction to bug bites. When I get mosquito bites, im never bothered by them, but my husband swells up and has intense itching. I wonder if this could be genetic??

What can I do next?

YES...I have 3 children, and 2 of them have horrible reactions to bug bites...they get enormous, and red. You are doing all the right things...plus, I have found that GOLD BOND cream really helps with the itching part. Hope this helps!

Hi, my son, Landon, whom is now 2years old is the same way. Last summer is legs were welpted in 5 or 6 places by mosquito bites, we to took him to the doctor, i had never saw a bug bite do that or stay for so long, the doctor said it welpted like that because they aren't able to scratch them which is a good thing, we give hime benadryl and use hydrocortisone on them as well. He also had a bite on his eye lid which in turn caused his eye to swell shut, it was just awful. The doctor says he allegric and in time it should get better, for now we just don't take any chances with getting bit. Good Luck

Both of my children and I respond that way to mosquito bites, too. Sometimes I don't even want to take them outside because the bugs will eat us alive! But I have found that Burt's Bees Bug Repellant works well and we don't smell like OFF all day and then I also don't feel like I need to give them a bath the moment we get inside. ( I have to put other stuff on in large amounts.) Hope this helps. Thanks for the question - I'm learning from other responses, too!

Please don't think I am being insensitive, but out cat does the same thing when a mosquito or a flea bites her. She gets large bumps up and down her back.

Some people are just allergic to mosquitos the same way some of us are allergic to weeds.

Not with my children but if I get bit by a mosquito I have the same reaction. I get huge whelps and they itch like crazy. It is just an allergic reaction to the bite.

My sisters daughter has the same reaction to any bug bite. She was told to not only use the hydrocortizone but to also use Gold Bond Medicated Powder. Especially during the summer months when it is hot. She was told that bug bites thrive off of moist areas and the skin in the summer time is very moist. So not only will the power dry up the bite it will help heal it. Just a thought. Good luck!

My oldest son will do that. The only bug repellant that I have found to work on him is Avon Skin so Soft. NOTHING else keeps the bugs off him. But neither myself nor my husband does this. So I don't know if its genetic.

I DON'T THINK ITS GENETIC..IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH HOW YOUR BODY REACTS TO THE BITE THE FIRST TIME. just watch out for bee stings and wasps those reactions could be worse.
