How Do You Clean Your Floors?

I need help - I hate cleaning house (who doesn't) and I've had a cleaning lady on and off for pretty much the past 5 years who cleans every two weeks. I do light, quick cleaning in between. Most recently I had a cleaning lady who came bi-weekly to do just the bathrooms and floors - the cleaning I despise most! Well, long story short, she's out of commission for at least a few months and I'm opn my own to clean my house for now and I have no idea how to clean my ceramic floors. They are the type of tile that don't look dirty even when they are (thank goodness!) but I do want to know that they are clean because my kids are all over the floor all the time. I tried a Swiffer wetvac and i don't like it .... anyone use something they love???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your awesome responses - it's so great to get first-hand answers from other moms! Due to the overwhelming reviews and the money saving potential (no chemicals or cleaners to buy) I went and bought the Shark Steam Pocket Mop (got it at Costco for $95!)

I used it for the first time yesterday and I love it! I was a little scared to find out how dirty my floors really were and I was slightly surprised that the pad wasn't dirtier - I did have to turn it over about 2/3 the way through my downstairs. The fact that it wasn't as dirty as I thought it would be either means that my cleaning lady has been doing a better job than I thought, or this mop doesn't do as good a job as I thought! Regardless, when I was done I felt great because I really felt my floors were clean and I got a really good workout in the process (not that it's hard, I just haven't cleaned floors like that in a while!)

I'm definitely keeping this one and recommending it - thanks moms!!!

I love my Shark Steam Mop, it's easy to use and light weight. It heats in a few seconds and it really does get sticky stuff up quickly. As we all know, as soon as you break down and buy something they come up with an improved model, just as Shark did too. The newer one swivels, mine doesn't so it's harder to clean around the toilet, and it has a triangle shaped attachment that makes it easier to clean things like a stove hood or the frig. I use mine to get crayon off the walls, clean dried spills inthe fridge, clean just about anything that needs heat to get clean, plus it cleans the floors. I toss the pads in the wash and they clean very well in just warm water and laundry soap.

I use a swiffer wet.(not the wetjet) When the pad dries (usually long before I'm done) I use a spray bottle filled with 1/4 pine sol and 3/4 water to spritz the floor as I go. I tend to stretch each pad as far as it can go. My entire house is tile and wood floor. Regular mopping was too much of a hassle. I pretty much have some area of the house that needs mopped every day. If I run out of pads before a shopping trip, I stick a thin rag on it that I can toss in the washer when I'm done. I would love to get one of the steam cleaners everyone talks about!

I cleaned a friends ceramic tiles for years for him. I just used Clorox and a mop. Then I would rinse them with vinegar to make them shine. They were clean and looked great also.

I have the Shark Steam Mop as well, and I love it! I use it on both our wood and tile floors. It's so easy to use, and the pads are washable as well.

Lucky you! I have shiny ceramic that looks like black marble. It looked beautiful when I moved in, but I quickly found out how hard it was to clean. My floor shows residue from any cleaners and streaks from water deposits! I finally found a hint on here awile back and tried it: vinegar and water. I use 1/4 vinegar to a couple gallons of hot water. It cuts through the dirt, dries without streaks or residue, and no need to rinse!

I use a vacuum. we are hardly ever home, so I do it once every 2 weeks. that gets a lot. Then i use a mop, one that is like what restuarants use. My bucket has a strainer on the top. My whole house takes an hour doing vacuum and mop. But when i look at the dirty water afterwards, Im so thankful!

I have ceramic tile floors also that don't "look" dirty but I know they are. I use a regular broom I designated just for mopping so that I can get into the crevices and dips that are the look of my tile. Since I don't have small children anymore I use a small cap of Pine Sol and hot water but you could use vinegar also.

I think the best thing for cleaning hard surface floors is a steam cleaner. There are no harmful chemicals used - just water. It cleans very well and quickly and leaves no residue. When you consider savings on cleaning products, the price isn't so bad. I have seen them for around $60 at Walmart and other stores.
No matter what cleaning method used, I always have trouble with the grout - I have found that a magic eraser works well on the hard to remove grout stains.

One cup of white vinegar in a gallon of water. Wet and wring your mop and go over the floor. Then go over again with plain water. My tile floors look as good as they did when we built 30 years ago.

Vacumm your floor once a week and in between use a dry mop, not Swiffter, the kind that are used for office buildings come in a smaller size. When you need it mop the floor.

We have a hoover floor mate. It works great, you can clean and then vacuum up the water so its dry almost instantly. No waiting 15+ minutes to walk on it. I think they are around $100+ but worth it. We have a lot of tile in our house and using the good old mop would be a pain in the but always having to go to a sink. You do have to refill the water and dump the tray but it works good.
