How Can We Remove Vomit Stains from Carpet?

My child got sick over the weekend during the night. It was explosive vomit which went everywhere. We have very light colored almost white, low-pile carpet. I sprayed Resolve carpet cleaner on it immediately, but didn't scrub it until later because it was the middle of the night. We think the stains might be permanent, meaning new carpet. Any suggestions for getting rid of it? We can't call the local carpet cleaning service to ask for advice because it's Sunday. We also tried Spot Shot. Oh, and it appears that the stain is chocolate, that being the last thing he ate. Thanks for any help.

What can I do next?

you would be amazed at the things that the carpet cleaning service can and cannot get out. It really depends on the color, not how long it has sat there. Reds and yellows are hardest. Good luck.

It might change the shade of the carpet, but to lighten the stain I would make a paste of oxyclean and let it sit on the stain overnight. Then comb it up and scrub. Again it could slightly bleach the carpet so I would maybe use this as a last option. A white carpet with a whiter spot will definately look better than a white carpet with a dark stain.

A good carpet cleaner can get it out. If you are in the Virginia Beach area I know an amazing guy who can get ANYTHING out (including old coffee stains and permanent magic marker!).

A couple years ago we had new carpet that immediately was stained ...we had to call a carpet cleaning co. and after a huge bill...the technician told us the BEST thing for cleaning spots on carpet is 1 drop of Dawn Dish detergent...some tepid water...agitate it lightly on the spot....then rinse with cool water and blot. that has been my lifesaver ever since!

For a NON-TOXIC solution that I KNOW will work, check out Melaleuca.com. Their product Sol-U-Mel WORKS!!!!! I use it on anything and everything. My accountant tried it on her son's beige carpet that had dark blue paint on it. It took the paint out, didn't hurt the carpet AND it is toxin free so it didn't hurt her son either. We have been able to get so many stains out of clothes, Sharpie marker off our walls and floors with just a cotton ball dipped in Sol-u-Mel, crayon off my sister's fridge, red Kool-Aide stain from my friend's van, red clay stains in carpet and the stink too and SOOOOO much more!

All of their products are non-toxic, environmentally responsible, affordable and best of all...THEY REALLY WORK! It's 100% money back if for any reason you don't like it.

We've been shopping Melaleuca for years now. I would like a chance to share this way of shopping with you. Email me directly at ____@____.com and we'll coordinate schedules and set up a good time for both of us, okay?

I have to agree with the recommendation for Nature's Miracle, it's made with enzymes that actually break down any organic material, it works wonders on any sort of organic stain like vomit, blood, urine, food, etc. I also have their laundry detergent for grass and other children's stains and I don't even have a pet.

I'm not sure about chocolate, but hydrogen peroxide will remove blood which is about the toughest stain ever. You can dilute it with a little water to make sure it doesn't bleach your carpet, but I just pour it straight on the stain, let it sit for a minute or two and then blot up.

I know this is a bit late, but I just got back from vacation. My husband used to work for a carpet cleaning crew at a local college and he swears by just using hot water to get out stains and maybe some carpet cleaner that really diluted. The reason is that it's hard to get all of the cleaner out, and the particles that don't come out attract dirt, making your floor seem dirtier. If possible, I'd use a carpet cleaner with a built-in heater. I know Wal-Mart (for example) allows them to be rented. We bought an excellent one for around $200, and it's worked wonderfully for pet pee stains, vomit, foods, drinks, and red clay from rainy days that gets tracked in. I just don't use floor cleaner with it, that way you don't have to worry about anything bleaching your carpet.

I recently used Kids and Pets cleaner that you can find at Target when my dog had bloody diarrhea all over my light beige carpet and it totally took the stains away. Some were from overnight and some were new and it worked great on both. Good Luck!

You might try DAWN liquid detergent or SHOUT and let it sit for a little bit and scrub again. and then afterward do what the other suggestion was by renting a carpet cleaner.

I have a beige colored carpet & I have found that rubbing alcohol works well on a lot of stains. Just put it on a clean white cloth & rub it. You may want to try it on a spot that isn't noticeable first. Good luck.

Have you tried to goto a local supermarket, like Giant or to Home Depot to rent a carpet cleaner and see if that works? If it doesn't, is the stain in a place where you could put a nicely featured small rug or peice of furniture so you won't have to buy a new rug any time soon?

You could try Natures Miracle. It is available in most pet stores, and works wonders. I have used it on our tan carpet when the kids threw up, and the stains are gone.

Good Luck!

Try Windex. Believe it or not, Windex will get lots of stuff out of carpets. If that doesn't work, try a small corner first to make sure your carpet doesn't lose it's color, but try some hydrogen peroxide on the area.

I'm sorry your child got sick! I he is better now!

I found the Resolve Max has worked on stains on almost EVERYTHING! We had taken my husband's car in to get it detailed - I had spilled a Coke in the passenger seat and it stained - they couldn't get it out. I used the Resolve Max and now the seat looks brand new.

Our dog had a sore on his tail and it bled during the night and had dried - used the Resolve Max and YAHOO! Clean!

I've used it on the grease stains - you know butter from popcorn, etc. on shirts from my boys and it's gone too. On clothes, I noticed I had to spray both sides of the stain.

Resolve Max is less than $3.00 and a VERY WISE investment!

Take care!

My daughter(at 2 years old) vomited in the middle of the night with fruit punch and chocolate icecream..ew...the sol-u-mel took it out, but it did take 2 applications. I use the sol-u-mel for every stain and odor around my whold house. Give it a shot!
