Help - My Son Has a Bad Yeast Infection

My poor son has had a rough week. He was diagnosed with a double ear infection Friday and has since started antibiotics which have caused diarrhea and a bad yeast infection. We have been giving him acidophilus supplements and feeding him yogurt and everything they say to give him. I've been treating it topically with Lotrimin AF at every diaper change and trying to keep him cool and let air circulate and let him "air dry", though that isn't working well. I'm rinsing wipes and just using lukewarm water to clean him up. My husband called the pedi office Monday and the nurse said there was nothing we could do other than all that. The problem is that it just isn't improving. He's still on the antibiotics till Saturday. I called the pedi office again a couple of hours ago, but haven't received a call back yet. They are usually really good about a quick turn around, so my guess is that they won't be able to give me any other answers. I am sure they must think I'm overreacting because I had to call them yesterday too because he fell and cut and bruised his forehead badly. I have to do something for him. He is in so much pain in his diaper area. He can't sleep. Diaper changes are near impossible; he does everything he can to get away while screaming hysterically. I plan on begging for some diflucan or something like that for him. Does anyone know if they can prescribe that for toddlers? (He's 2 next week.) There has to be something I can do for him. Any other suggestions? Please help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks all. Unfortunately our regular doctor was unavailable, but I did get him in to see a partner. They still wouldn't prescribe anything. They suggested I mix a paste up with the Lotrimin, Hydrocortisone, and Vaseline. She thinks that the yeast is coming under control and that the main source of his irritation can be solved with the hydrocortisone. She also said I could cut the antibiotic dose in half and stop tomorrow rather than Saturday because his ears have cleared up well. We have his 2 year check up next Wednesday so they can double check then. I will also stop using wipes as you guys have suggested. Hopefully this will all help. Thank you all so much.

I'm so sorry your son is going through that. How terrible! I agree with Melissa W. Keep calling that office until they can do something more for him. He shouldn't be in so much pain for so long. Can you at least give him some motrin?

My son has had a bad diaper rash a few times, but with a little A&D and Balmex or Boudreau's Butt Paste, it would clear up in a couple of days at most. Going several days with those horrible screams whenever you have to change their diaper would be unbearable. If you do get a call back from the nurse and they say there's nothing they can do, I would tell her I want to speak directly to the Pediatrician. Any good doctor will call you back themselves if you have a problem you really need to talk to them about.

Good luck to you. I hope your son can get some relief soon.

My pedi nurse told us not to use wipes to clean because they are too abrasive and it just keeps irritating the skin. She said to use cotton balls and water. I hope this helps.

Sorry to hear your son had a yeast infection! My son (3 next week) had a yeast infection earlier in the year and I thought it was actually a reaction to pull-ups. He has super sensitive skin. I took him to the doctor and she told me it was a yeast infection and suggested I use vagisil. I bought the equate brand and he cleared up very quickly. We also use Pampers Sensitive wipes. I tried the Huggies Sensitive wipes but thought they were rough.

I would check out stopyeast.com. The have stuff on the site that you can apply right to a yeast infection to stop it (at least I read that about a woman's yeast infection). You can e-mail or call them to ask about it. I've used 3Lac and it's great. Maybe they can overnight it?

Yep, my 3 month old is on diflucan right now for a yeast infection that ended up on her face (not sure how that happened still:) I would call and insist on it!! It has helped her a bit. I am sure that he is miserable, and I would do what I had to to make them see that...remember, we are paying them, not the other way around:) Best of luck! ~A.~

Wow, that poor baby! When my daughter was younger she got terrible yeast infections when she was on antibiotics. No fun, to say the very very least! Our pedi always prescribed Nystatin cream to spread over the area & it'd clear up right away.

I'd keep pestering that doctor's office, if I were you! Shame on that nurse!

My son gets yeast rashes too. My doctor will always write me a script for Nystatin if the Lotrimin isn't working (which it normally doesn't). Also, we use warm wet paper towels instead of wipes as I have never found a wet wipe that doesn't make him scream in pain. I'd contact your doctor again and see if they will give Nystatin a try.
